Didn’t see anything on the BBC news about this, even though we know the Ouse is prone to flooding each year. I guess since it didn’t happen in London or the south, it wasn’t worth the mention.

BBC not for the people!
@emmaathome29023 жыл бұрын
It was reported in other news outlets and the press. I also saw it online. And saying the south, does not cover the S west, we rarely even figure on the maps they show in press reports, far far less than the North even.

York floods like every single time it rains outside of York, it isn't really newsworthy. To a lot of York residents it's like the sun rising or setting everyday!

Thanks for uploading,I used to live in York and was wondering how badly it was flooded,I lived in a house at the bottom of Marygate when the big floods came in 2000,the flood defence gates were closed and sandbags two or three high were stacked on top and when I hoisted myself up to take a look the water was literally inches from my face. Pretty scary. I worked in retail and we were all furious to see a BBC reporter televised near Clifford's Tower wearing wellies in 6" of water telling the whole world that York city centre was flooded which was not true but that's never bothered the BBC. Did you go out to Clifton and the Ings which used to be a natural flood plain or is it all built on now?
@stuartmoss3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, I can imagine seeing the water so close to your face as being pretty scary! I just walked around the city centre, didn’t go any further. The water was due to peak about 5 hours after I left.

Ok we can't control the weather unfortunately, however the people that run this country would do well to look at how efficient other countries cope with similar or worse conditions. I feel bad for anyone anywhere that is affected by this year in & year out, especially if floods hit their homes or places of work. York is a place I have visited many a time over the years.

When u don’t dredge the rivers this is the result every year udon see this in Holland most of it under sea level absolute joke all these governments last 30 years
@jonjon90473 жыл бұрын
All the older generation: the river never flooded like this when it was dredged. The environment agency and city of York council: we can’t see any advantages to dredging the river so we will spend a fortune on flood defences and clear up work whilst complaining about being ‘cash strapped’.

People are too daft to fix the root cause of something these days, always reacting.
@markknight39833 жыл бұрын
Are they forgetting the flood of 1982 ? The river has never been dredged - a barge used to take sand from near Ouse Bridge but no longer. The EA say dredging won't stop the flooding and I prefer to listen to experts rather than keyboard warriors !
@grahamlittlefair81073 жыл бұрын
Yorks problem lie much farther upriver, farmland flood plains should be allowed to be flooded
@markknight39833 жыл бұрын
The basic problem is York is built on a flood plain where two rivers join - the city will always have flooding problems and they will only get worse with climate change.

flooding at york can be sorted the trouble is one the dam at naburn and two narrow rivers to Selby now to rectify all this you need a 40 foot across boring machine and bore a tunnel son 60 feet down and run it in a straight line to the ouse and you need two tunnels it with drain everything into the ouse with big pumps at the ouse end cost of 5 to 6 million but you have a dry york form then on
@spencerwilton58313 жыл бұрын
anna jeannette Dixon cost £5-£6 million? You have to be kidding! A tunnel boring machine alone costs more than that. The project management costs would be more than that. It would cost hundreds of millions. And anyway, it wouldn't work.
@andrewjohnson14673 жыл бұрын
The best solution is to build some watershed dams on the river swale, nidd and ure. This is because the majority of flood water comes from the yorkshire dales.

@@fenrichlee2867 it floods almost every year. Problem with the river Foss is it runs through many places. Modern days if places further north also get big amounts of rain they also put flood barriers up. Few years ago york got heavily flooded because somewhere north of Yorks flood barriers broke so york got so much water from there whilst having its own large amount of water.
