I did a trip from Leeds to Southport earlier this year, did many of the same roads you have but not this one! On the way- Shibden Wall, Halifax Lane the other way, Old Lane in Luddenden (failed, it was too wet that day), Mytholm steeps. The way back- Ramsbottom Rake, Blackstone Edge (Cragg Vale descent), Old Lane (success!), Halifax Lane, Trooper Lane. It's insane just how many climbs there are in this area and how many you can completely miss. I've ridden in the Dales and the Lake DIstrict but this was some of the hardest riding I've ever done.
@MrDazP1adv3ntures3 жыл бұрын
This sounds like a fantastic ride Francis. Living around Hebden Bridge can give you a 10,000ft day pretty easily if you plan a route hitting all the well known spots. Can I ask which climb you found to be the most challenging .
@franciss25293 жыл бұрын
@@MrDazP1adv3ntures They were all super tough, but I'd say that Old Lane in Luddenden (even at a mere 250m in length, which is barely a climb by my usual standards) was unexpectedly difficult. It's an all out sprint for momentum and near the very top the cobbles get super mossy and ragged. Then again, Trooper Lane after a good few miles in the legs was horrible too. Looking forward to riding this one next time I'm in the area which will be for some hill climb races!

I got off the other day in frustration at the route plan going to Skipton this way, it's just not worth straining yourself or the bike, spokes, chain etc to that level, plus it was brutally hard. I know in Giro and other big tours they will change their cassettes over for the hillier days and even use MTB gears on the odd occasion. The price I will pay with this bike now is on the descents where it will be spinning out over 50 mph. It's a great sport is cycling but there doesn't seem to be a one bike fits all. There is always a comprise somewhere, the hybrid was comfy as and had low gearing but it just wouldn't cut against the Dogmas lol. Thanks for sharing your thoughts again buddy.

Most of them around here are either punchy over a short distance or long and drawn out. The only other place I have cycled around where it can be steep and very up n' down, is Cornwall / Devon. There's no rtyhm in the riding due to the lie of the land. As for the 32 cassette , I've kept it on the bike for the time being because the 50 / 28 combo is nice to ride on without too much chain misalignment.

Great video Daz.. superb that you managed to get up it with your different ratios. I did wonder how you chaps carried that much speed on your longer rides on the other videos, the 52/39 probably has something so do with it! I’ve taken my riding to another level now, joined up with a local cycling club so you may get a few more subscribers as I’ve put a few of the lads on to your channel! 😃 Also just signed up for the Cheshire Cat Sportive which features Mow Cop and Biddulph Moor 😹😨Fingers crossed I can get up it, so I’ll be glued to your videos for advice! I’m on a Trek 2.1 with a Shimano R553 triple 50-39-30 and 105 11-28 cassette.. I just want to not have to push!
@MrDazP1adv3ntures3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments there John I have two bikes for long days out in the saddle. One has a more aggressive geometry with a 53 / 39 chainset which is great for fast Cheshire lanes and trips to Southport and Blackpool . The red one has a ride all day set up for sportives and much lower gearing . I like em both for many different reasons. The Trek bike sounds like a good all rounder and with a sturdy triple ring on the front it should give you peace of mind. Thanks for sharing the channel with your friends too . I have looked at a lot of other cycling channels that are out there and I'm trying to offer cyclists something they can relate to rather than talking at the camera about five things you never knew about me. Keep up the training and enjoy your new cycling club. After a few months you will start to form some good positive relationships with like minded people.
@johnjcs19823 жыл бұрын
@@MrDazP1adv3ntures Cheers pal! As for your channel, you are doing a good job! There are a few cycling channels with lucrative sponsorships where they get sent all the snazzy bikes and expensive kit. You may recall my snobbery comments a couple of videos back. Our group have among them a Dolan Rebus, Orbea Avant, Cervelo S5 and Pinarello F10 - I still did my turns on the front with my little aluminium Trek holding its own! Your modesty is refreshing and like me you are a multi-discipline rider (I’m an old school mountain biker myself) so that for me was the big draw to your channel and that’s why I will do my best to share your content where I can in the hope to convey the message that you can still be a keen rider without all the fancy stuff. I did prefer the old music though in your videos from last year, but that’s just my opinion! 🤷🏻♂️
@MrDazP1adv3ntures3 жыл бұрын
Thanks John, it's all about being versatile and like you say holding your own on the bike you have . There's not that big of a jump in performance from a £1000 Bike to a £9000 bike especially if you are pretty fit. As for the music, I just keep trawling through KZbin's royalty free archives to keep things fresh and to avoid getting copyright strikes. Some people who watch the gold panning videos hate the music full stop but I always think it helps to redirect people's attention .
@johnjcs19823 жыл бұрын
@@MrDazP1adv3ntures think I might pass up on the gold panning, but I like the idea of beach-combing with a metal detector - I know someone who does that and he’s found loads of historic trinkets washed up on the Liverpool shoreline. One recommendation I can offer though, I’ve swapped my Gatorskins for a set of GP5000s as summer tyres because Merlin had a deal on - the difference in performance and grip was night and day.

Great as always Daz! What route planner/map software do you use ?
@MrDazP1adv3ntures3 жыл бұрын
Hello Daisy . I have used a Garmin Oregan 450 GPS unit in the past for John o' Groats to Lands End trips for example, to simply guide me there step by step like a car sat nav. My current handlebar unit is a Garmin Touring edge which will plan routes for you as way points or places to go to. Garmin has a great app called Garmin Basecamp where you can plan routes etc.at home on the pc and you can view OS maps in 3D at 1:50,000 scale. I am a bit old school though and like to read a map book and learn the route from years of going to places and then linking places together that way. As for providing data on my videos , I just screen save the Strava data then put it through Adobe photoshop to layer the sections up and highlight key points. I hope this helps, any questions please ask .
