I started working in a garage at weekends as a 13 year old in the late 1970's then onto Motorbikes ending up in British Championship racing. I've always admired people who are panel beaters because the can mostly do anything vehicle related. I'm late 50's now and maybe its time to get some new tools. I love all the little tricks that you do, I watch and go ahhhh, that was a fkn good idea.

I love watching other tradesmen work, especially when like this they are meticulous about their craft. Now people can see why sometimes the seemingly simplest of jobs turn into an expensive outlay. It’s going to look great when finished, my uncle ( who’s a master bricklayer) had 2 in the late 70’s, I remember going to the beach with my cousin in it 😁

@@yorkshirecarrestoration indeed they do. I had spotted some surface rust on the arch returns on my daily clk. I pulled out the arch liners and was amazed at how much dirt and detritus was in there. Power washed it all out. Hit it with the wire wheel on the grinder and painted it all up. The only good thing is, they don't use salt on the roads here in the winter.

Great work mate!! Many people blame the opening rear quarter glass leaking water over the years for this problem with the rear sills which is probably true to an extent, but ive seen 2 door Asconas with same issues & they had the fixed glass. Who knows but its one of the many common places these rot. Always satisfying to make your own repair sections but these rear inner sill sections are, or at least were, available from Klokkerholm a few years ago that saved some time...good quality aswell!

It's not doing bad for its age - what's saved it is the lack of sunroof. On the Mantas, the sunroof drain tubes in each corner of the tray ran down the A and B pillars and neatly finished in the sill, thus guaranteeing the sills going. Jack points standard on all of them, along with the rails as they arch up into the bay, and finally the slam around the battery was another favourite spot. Rear arches are standard GM double skin water trap of the period (see also Astra, Senator, etc etc). Beyond that Mantas weren't actually too bad for rust for cars of that period.

Great skills and seems to be more real life and work compared to american car repair channels. I have owned cars of this period and they were rust boxes from new. I had an Alfasud TI and the passenger door fell off due to rust while I was driving it. Pulling back the carpet on your MK4 Cortina or Vauxhall Cavalier to find you are driving Fred Flintstones car was common
