Yeah, it's a weird kind of perspective quirk that comes from this scene. Even though Raphael the Raven is smaller than some of the other bosses in the game, he makes a big impact by launching Yoshi to the moon, followed by making a huge constellation when he's defeated. :D

Back in the day, I played Paper Mario first on N64. This is where I first encountered him, as a good guy. Years later, I would play Yoshi's Island on the GBA for the very time time. Not knowing that Yoshi's Island was a port from the SNES, I was so confused to why I was fighting a character that helped me in another game. Same thing goes for a few other characters from Yoshi's Island and Super Mario World.

No lie, I had a similar reaction - just the other way around! Played Yoshi's Island first, then played the original Paper Mario years later, and I was like "wait a sec, Raphael's a good guy now?" Then again, Paper Mario's universe (well, pre-Sticker Star) made a point to turn Mario "enemies" into Mario "races" featuring characters with personalities, different designs, clothing, and whatnot. I guess it's not a huge stretch to see Raphael be a good guy in this universe given the circumstances - assuming it's the same Raphael we're talking to from Yoshi's Island, that is! :D

Why does this intro sound so different than the naval one if they're the same track?

I think it has to do with the fact that the sound-effect of Yoshi getting launched to the moon (and Raphael's flight to the moon soon after) plays over the song, where as Naval Piranha's intro has no sound-effects up until she starts chomping. A lot of old games from this era had to work within the confines of a limited number of sound channels on the hardware, and songs usually took over many of these audio channels. Depending on the sound-effect and the game, it was often that certain sound-effects played on certain audio channels, resulting in parts of a song getting temporarily cut-off in order for the sound-effect to play properly.

Never the less, I find it so awesome that hardware limitations can make for such epic coincidences such as this one. As I said in my other comment, the crecendo effect with the highlighted drums this has on the track makes for this intro on par of that of naval's

+Switch Actually, you're right. I wrote that comment over 4 years ago when I didn't know any better. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Super FX2 chip actually rotates the sprites independent of the background layer, which was why you could have objects spinning without affecting the background. Whereas Mode 7 only affects the background layer (which was why all the bosses in Super Mario World were on a black background if there was any rotation involved), right?

You're right about the FX2, but i guess Mode 7 is limited to perspective simulation, making a plane look like 3D. Like in Super Mario Kart and F-Zero

I'm too late but, yes, it's mode 7. Not the sprites, obviously, but all the background layer. The Super FX just rotates the sprites (Raphael and the stars), thing that the SNES can't do by himself.
