I animated part of this video back in 2016. I drew most of the fight and currently I am just waiting for the right moment to redraw it all again so I can post a high quality video on the internet, cos I love Martial Arts, I love Animation and I want to share it someday, even if it takes a while. It’s amazing the amount of subtleties you find when analyzing their movements. The timing is perfect and the whole fight flows like a dance (with all due respect). There’s a lot of beauty to it.

Sugino's parents were peasants with no rights to hold swords, besides, it was probably just a iaïto.

This was a kata. Kata is an exercise of striking, it is not considered a duel of any kind. Sure the student may have drawn better in this instance, she most likely would be dead in a real fight with him. Seeing as how he is the master of katori shinto ryu, I doubt he would ever be beaten so easily. Also, she was using a Naginata, whch has a much greater distance than a katana, normally this type of foe would be fought with either a bow, or another polearm weapon.

Lot of people seem to get some wrong idea about this woman beating him. First. It is a naginata kata? I think this is called Tachi Uchi no Kurai. There is 1 attacker and 1 defence, attacker is sugino sensei, and defend these women. Secondly, he's probably already 90yrs old at this point of video? Or 80+ who knows. Anyways i know nothing of this stuff soooo 😂 plus this vid is dated long time ago, i just happen to pass in random KZbin vid. Sugino sensei inspired me to learn the Ken, i wanna reach 90 and still be badass like this grandpa 😂
@TopLob4 жыл бұрын
It's called Omote no Naginata. The kata are 1st: Itsutsu no Naginata 2nd: Nanatsu no Naginata 3rd: Kasumi no Naginata 4th: Hakka no Naginata The attacker (kirikomi) is the woman (it might be Torigei sensei), while Sugino Sensei is the defender (uke, more accurately translated as "receiver"). The reason she "beats" him is because the teacher always takes the uke role to teach the student how to do the attacks (kogeki) properly, and the uke yields at the proper time to give the student an opening to get a successful attack. The idea is that the student learns to attack when they see an opening.

@@TopLob In fact there's two women, one is Eri Kusano (doing the two first), the other is Torigei sensei indeed (doing the two last).

Why in all the demonstration kata's do the Sensei or more experienced martial artist's always play the role of the loser in the encounter?
@Finny19967 жыл бұрын
there are several reasons, but essentially to think of that role as that of 'loser' is somewhat off. the senior role is training the junior, as well as testing themselves, and should be able to 'be just a little better than the junior at any given time'
@ARKSN1PER7 жыл бұрын
The sensei is the uke because the teacher needs to be able to feel if the student is doing the technique right. This is the way all Koryu train. This teaching method was phased out when the gendai arts started to take over (Judo, Aikido, etc..)

i learned recently why the blade of the katana curves. the sword is one bar inside another, two slightly different alloys - iron and carbpn from charcoal, but in different proportions. the sword, having finally been shaped, is cooled in water, and it is here the bend happens. apparently one third of katanas made in this way are lost at this point.
@Azurel7778 жыл бұрын
+curious butler Your source was wrong. The layering of two or more differend kind of metals is not the reason for the curviture. Differential hardening is.
@wendelgyutb7 жыл бұрын
Ok, but... that´s HOW the sword gets curved. Now, what is the INTEND for the sword to get curved? Because it´s faster and easyer to take out of the sheath, making possible the perfect movement. So, it doesn´t need just to get curved, but to be perfectly curved. Otherwise, it wouldn´t be carried.
@curiousbutler90987 жыл бұрын
the way we saw the blade curve was in water, when the partially finished sword with straight edges is glowing hot - hot straight sword goes into cold water, steaming blade comes out curved - and apparently the curve is determined by the quality of the different metals in the blade, is how we saw this on the vid - oh, way back - this was a rare vid. we saw the nuggets of metal, where they come from, the ancient smelting processes etc. one interesting point of discovery is that katana readily bend - we see guys bending them back after demos, and these are like the real the damascus, blades that cost a thousand dollars or more - mall katana, now there's a comedy.
@Azurel7777 жыл бұрын
They bend because of the layered construction where only the outher layer an the edge are really hard, while the inner core is "soft". They use different type of metal for these parts to get this result. Luckily this makes it harder for them to just snap in two. The curve is determined by many factors, but a good smith can control it a lot (for example by knowing how exactly to apply the clay). I don't think that there is such a thing as perfect curviture. Especially not one that makes it easy to draw. In fact almost straight swords are much easier to draw (own experience). The curve makes them better for mounted combat (which is why it was used by horsemen all around the world)

Seems a pacific man.. 3:55 Why naginatas are played by women ?
@pompadour_gagarin17236 жыл бұрын
Naginata practice is typically associated with women since the Edo era. When spears started to replace naginata as the main samurai polearm, mostly after the Mongol invasions (1300's), the naginata was still studied but much less used and became a usual dowry gift for high-status brides. In the familial martial arts schools, women went on to practice the weapon above anything else, some of the schools went on to being administered by women as well (like in Toda-ha Buko-ryu for instance, there was several generations of women headmasters). In Imperial Japan, the samurai sword became a symbol for japanese masculinity and the naginata one for femininity. Kendo and kenjutsu was taught to boys, naginatajutsu to girls, this division is still widely recognized in many of the old systems and the new. Naginata of the 30's and post-war was mostly reconfigured by a group of women teachers. In many naginatajutsu schools, women are or were proeminent in the teaching role (Toda-ha Buko-ryu, Jikishinkage-ryu Naginata-do, Tendo-ryu), but it's not everywhere like so. For instance, in the Sugino dojos of TSKSR (the style shown here), women are typically and almost always when possible dedicated senseï of the naginata curriculum, but in the Otake dojos (another proeminent teacher), this isn't the case at all.
