Still so relevant in 2023. However, I do personally believe that the decades of work will come to fruition.

So nice to see Peter Garrett participating. Mandawuy Yunupingu, who would pass away one year later, seemed has just been delibilitated. R.I.P. Mandawuy Yunupingu!

LYRICS to “Treaty” (courtesy of the Yothu Yindi website): Well I heard it on the radio And I saw it on the television Back in 1988, all those talking politicians Words are easy, words are cheap Much cheaper than our priceless land But promises can disappear Just like writing in the sand Treaty yeah treaty now treaty yeah treaty now Nhima djatpangarri nhima walangwalang (You dance djatpangarri, that's better) Nhe djatpayatpa nhima gaya' nhe marrtjini yakarray (You're dancing, you improvise, you keep going, wow) Nhe djatpa nhe walang gumurrt jararrk gutjuk (You dance djatpangarri, that's good my dear paternal grandson) This land was never given up This land was never bought and sold The planting of the union jack Never changed our law at all Now two river run their course Seperated for so long I'm dreaming of a brighter day When the waters will be one Treaty yeah, treaty now, treaty yeah, treaty now Nhima gayakaya nhe gaya' nhe (You improvise, you improvise) Nhe gaya' nhe marrtjini walangwalang nhe ya (You improvise, you keep going, you're better) Nhima djatpa nhe walang (You dance djatpangarri, that's good) Gumurr-djararrk yawirriny' (My dear young men) Nhe gaya' nhe marrtjini gaya' nhe marrtjini (You improvise, you keep improvising, you keep going) Gayakaya nhe gaya' nhe marrtjini walangwalang (Improvise, you improvise, you keep going, that's better) Nhima djatpa nhe walang (You dance djatpangarri, that's good) Gumurr-djararrk nhe yå, e i, e i, e i i i, i i i, i i i, i i (You dear things) Treaty ma' (Treaty now) Promises disappear - priceless land - destiny Well I heard it on the radio And I saw it on the television But promises can be broken Just like writing in the sand Treaty yeah treaty now treaty yeah treaty now Treaty yeah treaty now treaty yeah treaty now Treaty yeah treaty ma treaty yeah treaty ma Treaty yeah treaty ma treaty yeah treaty ma

Great song... but what would be the political and social consequences of "treaty"? No one on here seems to be asking that question. I mean, where does it all end? Should I, as a person of German descendency, hit up the Italians for all the damage and genocide that Caesar's legions inflicted upon my forbears? I am all for reconciliation. But we need to be clear on what we are seeking. We cannot, regrettably, undo the past. But we can work together for a better future.

I think that working together for a better future is the purpose of a Treaty. Though no one could deny that what happened to affected people in ancient Roman times was terrible, the fact is; that there are Indigenous Australians, who are only now in their 50's, who may have been taken from their parents and siblings, in the 1970's and 1980's, to be be raised by non Indigenous families. The lead singer in this band; whose legacy remains very influential, passed away at the age of only 56 years, which was considered "expected", even as recently as 2008, for Indigenous Australians. I definitely recommend reading the Uluru Statement From the Heart, if the commenter hasn't already read it. It's essential reading for anyone who will be voting in the referendum in October. The fact is: a Treaty would involve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, speaking for themselves, negotiating with non Indigenous Australians. If someone is saying "we must be clear on what 'we' are seeking", advice would be: to recognise that "we" does not presume that Indigenous Australians perspectives have been subsumed into a 'colonial dominated consciousness' of 'we'. Despite the most abhorrent attempts, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples are not "extinct", to use a word, that is usually used in reference to animals, but has been used in relation to Aboriginal Australian people. I believe that reading the Uluru Statement, material at the Voice website and at websites, such as aiatsis dot gov dot au, will give a better idea of the perspectives of Indigenous Australians, who would form one half of the parties, who would negotiate a Treaty.

Its January 26 today its Australia day .And its the date that the Aborginals its not about Captain Cook because we are not responsible.its about the Flag.Brithish union jack flag. And Australia was so proud of our Aborginals leaders that said they is no Division and proved to Australia on The Oct 14 like that great lady Jacinda price she should be nominated as Australian of the year instead of giving it people that Havent really done nothing to deserve it .When she said we are all 1 ❤️ In Australia and today with the Vote and Australia saying A Big No proved it.Finally we cant do anything about our past .But we can do something about our future and Oct 14 is Avery important date the Day we said No to no more Divisions.Because we are all Aussies.Aussie ! Aussie! Aussie! Oi OI Oi ❤️🙏
