In my opinion, the Sydney 2000 closing ceremony was one of the most spectacular if not the best ever. I think the only one that rivals it is London 2012. The festive atmosphere, multicolored, its quasi-impromptu character, the athletes as the epicenter of the big party, the ability that Australians have to laugh at themselves, the multicolored tour to each of the elements that are the pride of the country, makes it unique and unrepeatable. It is not a solemn event, it is a party by and for athletes. 🎊🎉🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

It really should be what we remember most of all. M Yunupingu pointing a defiant finger at the podium and "all those talking politicians" (remember, it would have been John Howard sitting up there) sends chills down my spine. I can't imagine the current government would sanction a performance of Treaty and Beds are Burning at this, the biggest stage, bringing Australia's shame to the world. If only all those people from all those countries knew what they were dancing to, knew what those lyrics meant. I was 12 and born outside of Australia; I certainly didn't know. I dearly wish I did.

I agree 1998/1999/2000 was such an amazing time to grow up in, times like these and other sporting moments will never be matched for me have too many good memories of these years, once 9/11 happened the world changed and still to this day not fully recovered for that catastrophic event

AHH I CANNOT watch these syd opening and closing ceremonies MORE!! I was born 99’ in Western Australia, so obviously no recollection but the VIBE!? As someone whose lived in the outback and the city/beach of WA, this fills my SOUL with love and joy to have been lucky enough to grow up on this land. Aboriginal culture, for me, is the most beautiful in the world. What a turning point this was for solidifying Australia and its appreciation for Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders, as well as the melting pot of cultures that this country has. BLOODY LOVE YA STRAYA!!
