One of the things that makes this game really nice, for me, is that it doesn't have consumables. The runes and infusions are designed to serve the same purpose, but on cooldowns, which means there's no too good to use syndrome. It's such a nice change.

What i like so much about minimal graphic rpgs like this and caves of qud is that it allows so much of your imagination to fill the gaps. When you learn more and more of the in game lore it really adds to the head canon eith you and youre character

I remember playing it long long ago, deciding to try a mage.... and ended up having like the most Epic Mage vs Mage duel I've ever seen in a video game. There were summons, fireballs, thunder, teleporting around, healing, going invisible, ambushing, buffing, debuffing, straight-out-punch-fest.. it was crazy.

ToME is incredible, no question there. Tons of classes, all of which play super differently with a number of viable builds. Massively more nuanced difficulty settings than any other roguelike I've ever played. Plenty of unexpected developments in a character based on which unique gear pieces you end up finding. Multiple entirely separate campaigns, all of which with tons of unlockable stuff in them... And that's without even getting into the modding community adding even more to all of those categories. I've put a concerning number of hours into ToMe and I've still only won a handful of times, got a lot to learn still. (I can consistently reach the west, but man there's some dangerous stuff out there, and the final dungeon is a heck of a final test.)

Grabbed this game during the Summer Sale and dumped a bunch of hours into it, got pretty obsessed with unlocking new classes and trying them out. I do love how the classes have distinct play styles from each other and are not just a few stats shifted around.

Tales of Maj Eyal is great because unlike so many other games, if you play a sword and board character or any martial character, you've still got so many abilities, you almost never are just 'bumping' enemies. Also build-crafting is fantastic fun.

Good review of a great game. I think its skills, classes, and races are really well done. So many variations and possibilities. Non-roguelike rpgs could learn a fair bit from TOME on how to do character progression. Everything from being a necromancer who achieves lichdom (through evil, grim methods) to a nature-loving, magic-hating oozemancer who has learned how to become one with slime, and protoplasm. And everything in between.

Rogue-likes don't have 'bad graphics' - they have an art style that's simply not the norm these days (yes, even ASCII is ultimately an artistic choice). That said, Tales of Maj'Eyal looks gorgeous and the icons are especially notable. The dude that does the graphics also worked on Low Magic Age and thus that game also has a unique look, with some very familiar icons if you've ever played TOME.
@styxthelich
@styxthelich Жыл бұрын
will say that tome is most definitely one of the more casual friendly rouge likes were you can change to adventure mode were ya get inf lives or the normal mode were ya get like 3 lives if memory serves with ways to get more. lots of fun weird classes from bog standard stuff that's still interesting like necromancer to off the wall stuff like solipsist meshing the world of dreams and reality into one with spells that put people to sleep and give life to their nightmares or go full Freddy Kruger and just invade a fuckers dream. there's 2 dlc packs that add some new stuff too one is all about orks and steam powered fantasy tech the other is centered around Lovecraftian type stuff with a class that pretty much turns you into a tentacle monster that dick slaps anything that gets in yer way.
@daniell1483
@daniell1483 Жыл бұрын
@@DarkVeghetta Sure, it may be an intentional style choice, but let's not beat around the bush: compared to almost any other style, it is very basic and has probably caused thousands of people to hopelessly bounce off of these games. Call it bad, call it intentional style, whatever. It doesn't have broad objective appeal, and thus is something holding the games back, not pushing them forward to popularity and gaming domination beyond a very niche set of players.
@DarkVeghetta
@DarkVeghetta Жыл бұрын
@@daniell1483 Given how many of us actively play roguelikes, I really wouldn't call the genre 'niche' these days (I say genre, as most roguelikes have a similar art style, if not simpler than TOME's). It's certainly a smaller pool of players than some other genres (with MOBA's probably being the most popular by raw numbers), but not as small as you're making it out to be. At least, it doesn't feel like it from this side, but maybe that's because we're quite a consistent group and, thus, it's possible for TOME to have had a couple of thousand of active players every day for over a decade with a much smaller set of players than some other games would need.

Seconding that recommendation. Siralim is... A game for a very particular niche. But it serves that niche incredibly well. There is *no* better monster training team building RPG out there if you're the kind of person who loves getting lost in build planning, and the amount of endgame content if you really wanna keep pushing is utterly jaw dropping. There are auto-explore and auto-ability macros you can set up as well that make certain more tedious levels faster on your second and third playthroughs. They come with a risk though, when combat initiates you may not be in an ideal position.

I can tell, that auto-explore is safer option. When you are clicking, you will do it automatically and sometimes didnt stop the movement when you get hit by some sneaky elite - this will cause wasted turn and another hit which might very well send you to the grave.

At some point in my life I had no internet but had this game installed in my steam library. Having basically zero internet(I was out in the country, cell reception was terrible), I couldn't watch videos or download anything, I gave this game a go thinking nothing of it. I spent THOUSANDS of hours on it. I died many times, but had this one character that I leveled up(took me months, just this 1 character. Also, I took my sweet time as I had already spent hundreds of hours with only 1 life) and was powerful only to die to some place where there was a dead necromancer? I honestly can't remember it was so long ago. It was insane and TENSE. Having nothing to do out in the country, this game took me on the wildest adventures fueled even more so by my imagination. Sadly, when I did get reliable internet, Steam did not save any hours I had put into it and somehow I lost all progress, although in the games defense, I think it was my fault that happened as my save files were stored locally. I IMPLORE you, if you like living on the edge, reading, using your imagination, and TENSE and frightening moments, play this. Don't let the graphics fool you, once you sink several hours into it, you will begin to understand the depth of this. Also, when I played, I changed the animation so that instead of the character automatically appearing on a tile you click on, they smoothly transition to the next tile, like if you were picking up a chess piece and placing it on an adjacent tile. Doesn't effect gameplay, but made it easier and more pleasing to my eyes to not have my character "teleport" on every move I made. It also affects all other characters on screen. Try it out, there's tons of settings to change. As of typing this, I'm only 6mins into the video so apologies if it was already mentioned by the time ya'll read this :) Had to put in my two cents, this game deserves every rougelike fan's love.

The "DNA" of this game has pretty old roots in the roguelike community. The engine, T-Engine 4, is "4" because it's the 4th iteration of the engine that started with the ORIGINAL T.o.M.E.: Tales of Middle Earth (a.k.a. Troubles of Middle Earth). DarkGod, the creator of Tales of Maj'Eyal and the original T.o.M.E., created it wayyy back in 1998 as a fork of ZAngband (was originally going to be PernAngband, but he quickly fell back on the Tolkien roots of the original Angband after legal threat from Ubisoft and Anne McCaffrey) that changed the wilderness map of Amber to Middle Earth with several different towns (like Bree, Lothlorien, etc), dungeon locations (Barrow Downs, Moria, Mirkwood, etc), and quests based on the Tolkien lore. ToME 2.x was the last major version of that game, and the source of that game was still very obviously ZAngband-derived. ToME 3 was where the Lua-based scripting engine that T-Engine 4 uses got its start, though ToME 3 was only ever in an alpha state before DarkGod switched gears to a non-Tolkien setting, and dialed everything up 10 notches to create T-Engine 4 and Tales of Maj'Eyal. You'd be hard-pressed to find a roguelike as full-featured or even CLOSE to as utterly massive as this game. I guess C:DDA is much more in-depth with regards to interacting with the world itself, but I feel like that game goes entirely too far in that direction. Also, the gameplay of that game feels very different. It's much more of a survival game whereas Tales of Maj'Eyal is really an adventure game.

Personally, I dont think the graphics are the biggest reason it's not more popular. The time it takes to get familiar enough with it to just play and have fun is super high in comparison to other games. I get that its complexity and breadth are god tier but I feel that the complexity alienates the largest player base that doesnt have the time or will to develop that level of proficiency for a game. I love so much about but this game but I don't enjoy being in a constant state of confusion for hours then realizing Ive done far more researching game mechanics than playing the game once im done for the day. I am positive this type of intricate and complex gameplay appeals to some players and with everything else done so damn well by these developers this game is 100% god tier for that demographic. I wish I could enjoy it more!

Fun factoids: In the beginning, Tales of Maj'Eyal was Pernangband, and was a variant of Angband. Along with any variants, Angband was a community maintained group of games descended directly from Rogue. The transition from "everything happens in one dungeon" to the paradigm with an overworld and dungeons scattered around started with Pernangband. Eventually, Pernangband became Tales of Middle Earth and started getting fancier. The name change was so the dev could market the game on Steam and GoG and etc. I'm sure getting all the Tolkien references out was quite a chore. Anything I'm getting wrong, please forgive me. I'm remembering back to my many hours playing Angband and participating in the #Angband IRC channel...

To me, where TOME excels, is the speed of the interface. There's actually a setting to slow it down when you take a percentage of damage. Mouse overs give tons of info and comparative info with gear you have. This gives you time to play smart.

I managed to get to near the end once, there was a type of hall way with bosses spaced out along it and I got past a couple of them then got wrecked and lost my last life. I was gutted. there is a new DLC in the works, I'm eager to see that and Elin is supposed to come out this year and I thought elona was quite close to ToME, just more JRPG-ish.

I was just playing this game earlier today, completely unrelated to this video. It’s fun to just try a bunch of different builds, see how you can break stuff.

I've got 1800 hours of playing ToME, the most played game in my list of 200+ steam games. I'm always coming back to ToME, very addicting. Please send help...or not its so much fun.

If you want a fun melee combo then try a Ghoul Reaver. The ghoul rot is a disease so you can easily spread it to hordes of enemies which means you can wipe hordes really quick with the class :D

TBH Maj'Eyal is pretty much a turn based hack and slash played on hardcore. It has Hack & Slash style itemization but sticks to the turn based roots of the roguelike genre.

If you want to get technical about it, it's a turn-based rogue-like/lite role-playing hack & slash. It's just easier to go with rogue-like as the umbrella term.

I really wish Steam was optimized to give games like this attention.

Waaay late to comment this. But since I've just started playing it again. I think next time you should showcase the more unique classes that ToME have. I think Paradox Mage and Temporal Warden offer something that AFAIK no other roguelike have. Being able to mess with Time itself. Being able to create different timelines and explore them is a ridiculous power by itself. Their other talents are also pretty crazy. Temporal Warden's teleporting around is very unique as well. But I guess it's best to showcase them once they are like level 30-40 and have all the silliest power. If possible do it while fighting the more difficult / complex enemies so you can showcase how complex and rewarding the tactics can be.

I've been playing this for years ..typical loop is: start a new character, find a cool item for another build, push to the shared item vault, store item, start a new character (repeat)..anyone else have this problem? 🤯 Love it tho 😅

Does the ice let you walk over water? Because you know water is a deadly trap in the olden fantasy days, many people did not know how to swim!

This game is so similar to the SSI version of DnDs "Pools of radiance" and the like from back in the 80s.
