Scott, that was a great drive it home at a very realistic level. I agree that the IMSAFE checklist as is makes it much too easy to blow off or ignore a situation that may apply to you and needs attention. I think your 1 to 5 rating level is a great way to add that realism needed to add to the make sure to stay safe approach, if you will....... THANKS!

Scott, Thanks for drilling down into this checklist with more detail. Provides a good way to slow down as one goes through a personal preflight. When I run the IMSAFE checklist, I also try to remember to include hydration and eating, two important things that can affect my performance while flying.

Excellent point! Thank you for bringing it up! I debated including it, but I wasn’t sure how many folks are familiar with the Risk Management Handbook. However, the Handbook notes: “some publications combine Emotion with Stress as the “S” in IMSAFE and leave the “E” to remind pilots about “Eating.” Since proper nutrition and hydration affects wellness and safety, a pilot planning a long flight should consider appropriate food and water intake and supply.” Thank you for sharing this! Please keep your comments coming!

Thank you Scott. Every form of self evaluation before a flight should be an integral part of every flight planning process.

Fantastic video, love the number system. When I am out at the airport about to fly I find checking in and asking "Am I excited about the flight" tends to take care of a few of these. If am upset, distracted by something or feeling bad, the answer is usually a "No", my sign to head home. I want my flights to be a "Want to", not a "Have to".
