I got milked for hours…. Changed my first instructor because he used to sound rude and shout in the cockpit nobody liked him at Flight School. Everyone said he was too cocky so I switched to another instructor in August 2021 on September 24, 2021 I did my first solo flight that my second Instructor had me fly another 50 hours because he did not feel that I was safe enough to fly solo even though I had a solo already and I had a great. I did all my three landings perfectly no bounces. At that point I got tired of it at 105 hrs and spoke to a local Aviation group on Facebook they told me to switch Flight School and I went to another Flight School over there in about 10 hours that Instructor got me to solo and cross country solo. Add about 140 hours I got my private pilot license and now I am almost done with my instrument rating.

Great video. I had to leave my first flight school because the instructor wasn't let me do anything (and I wish I was exaggerating, but sadly, I'm not). I finally left there to the one I'm at now. I've had to tell my new instructor (who's new to instructing, not just new to me) to let me make mistakes as long as it doesn't jeopardize our safety. He acknowledged that was something he needed to work on and has done a good job at it. Now, if I'm forgetting to do something, he'll wait a minute or so and see if I correct it and then he'll offer a verbal nudge like "anything you should be doing right now?" or (my favorite) "if I was flying the plane, I would probably be doing xyz right now". So, excellent points made in this video! I hopefully have my checkride coming up in a month or two, so I'm trying to soak in as much information as I can.

It's great that your CFI acknowledged his weakness. There's nothing wrong with having weaknesses. But refusing to accept that it's a weakness and actively working on overcoming those are two completely different approaches! Thanks for watching and sharing your story Tommy! So something like flying along to the east at 5500, turning to the northwest, and maybe a minute later "Is everything as it should be?" Of course, the answer is no, should be higher or lower...

I’ve actually started giving students “homework” so after a lesson I’ll tell them, “next time you come in, I want to you to tell me what you can about METARs/TAFs” something simple and easy, nothing ever complicated so I can see if my students are eager to learn

As a student this video really encapsulates and validates my feelings as though I wasn’t progressing in my training. I was never quite able to put it into words but something seemed really off with the way things were going. I appreciate knowing better of what to look out for and what to expect from an instructor. Thank you!

Agree 100% with following the FOI, Fundamentals of Instruction. Quite accurate on the foundation of Instruction. So important to make sure the student knows how to log their hours as well.

"Telling is not Teaching" by Mike Thompson. This book should be mandatory reading for every new CFI.

Fantastic points. I had an instructor who briefed the flight taxxiing to the runway, that was really confusing. He was good on the controls, let me make minor mistakes or verbally corrected after asking if I thought there was an issue. I've seen a few videos where the instructor keeps on making corrections to the controls when they were at 500 feet on the approach. Another one was making corrections to a student who was on his pre check ride. He should have been doing more like you. Arms folded and quiet.

My advice is to study about mental disorders and narcissism and if you detect it in a CFI run away from him, every flight he will create a new narrative to make you feel dependent on him and lead you to fell more and more incompetent or he will suck your money in useless hours of flying and in the end lead you to give up on aviation. A tip, they look really cool at the beginning of the training process.

Great topic, and really enjoyed hearing your perspectives on CFI traits (just subscribed) ! What are your feelings on a highly experienced and knowledgeable pilot and CFI who never encourages or tells his students when they do something right or encourages them, is good about letting his students fail and recover on their own but then does very little coaching e.g. suggesting bettor techniques and methods to get past a students weak or sticking points. Is it time to move on to a different CFI ?

Welcome aboard Private Joe! Good CFIs are balanced people who aren't too polar in one direction. They aren't afraid to give feedback on a student's weaknesses. Just like a student, an instructor has their own strengths and weaknesses. As students, we recommend talking to the instructor and asking for more intentional feedback. When the instructor refuses, they aren't willing to improve their abilities as an instructor. That's when it's time to move on to a different CFI.

Would you say if a student which I am always should be best prepared as an getting familiar with the poh of the airplane before hand and have log book and know planes speeds and walk around pre flight check in my case my instructor is new not cfi yet but commercial rating but me as student to think of as I been the PIC my 1st flight is Feb 18th on a PA 28 161 warrior II

Primacy is rubbish and it directly contradicts the other “FOIs.” Recency and Intensity are what matters while the FAA seems to have done a too cursory read of Twersky and Kahneman. They’ve completely missed Klein with an embarrassingly shallow look at naturalistic decision making. And they fail to tie Klein with ‘First Fit Pattern Matching’ to Kahneman System One / System Two while misunderstanding Kahneman when discussing Kahneman’s work.
