@@Nameless82284 the easy response is "it's just a joke" but its probably more like the writers sort of lampshading the fact that they introduced a character that was so concerned with Lisa's happiness that he would have this heartfelt goodbye to her, on top of doing everything else as a *substitute teacher* that showed his care for the children. They give the character a moment to go, "yeah, this isn't something you should start to expect out of life"

What I love about “You are Lisa Simpson”… Remember how Bergstrom was called a dork when he came into class in a cowboy costume? & instead of being ashamed and hiding his genuine self, he embraced it and complimented the artist. “You are Lisa Simpson” can be interpreted many ways, but in this particular context... it could mean that she is Lisa Simpson, her own person & to never lose that, and to embrace it. Even when other kids bully her into being someone else.

You think you know where the episode is going. That Lisa has a crush on the sub teacher and she needs to learn to let that go but it's more than that. This was a person she felt connected to. She spends her whole life surrounded by people who don't really understand her, but Mr Bergstrom really supported her and helped her grow. That's why it's so heart wrenching when he leaves her.

This is more emotional when it happens to you. In my junior and senior years, I had teachers who actually restored my faith in the education system, and I remember wanting nothing more but to graduate because I hated the school's stupid rules, my own class (2023) which oftened judge me; but when it happened I was particularly emotional when I left their classes for the final time. Having adult figures treat you like a human being and also understand & sympathize are extraordinarily examples of what teachers should be.

Lisa's Substitute has been my top TV tearjerker for 20 years and I think it will remain the same to my dying day. It just makes such fantastic points about how adults should treat children without ever getting preachy or treacly. When Mr. Bergstrom said, "It'll be okay" is when I actually started bawling. Not crying. Bawling. No one ever says this to me. I'm always the one saying it to others when they feel bad or are struggling through something. When I'm alone, I don't feel like I'm there for myself because I have to be the emotional support for everyone else. Hearing that is such a deep comfort that I didn't know I needed. I just started crying right after that like a floodgate because life has been so hard for so many years. The depression every day is horrible and you kind of just feel like nothing will be okay and you'll never get out of where you are in life. Hearing that helped immensely. This whole scene helped. It will be okay and I'll be happy again one day soon. Thank you, Mr. Bergstrom.

When her face goes from angry to sad, any one who has ever been in love that it's the people you love the most that can make you the most angry, even if it's irrational at times. Love is what holds this world together, it's so powerful that it can overwhelm us at times. Never turn your back on those who help you the most. Always give people the benefit of the doubt. If they break your trust over and over then the best thing you can do is leave their life. Your chapter in their life is done and they must learn from your permanent absense. This scene bleeds more of what life is than most things you'll ever see.

As a stupidly intelligent high IQ freak who was raised In a small town with a hopeless family at a school with hopeless teachers... Who had one science teacher once who I actually connected with and showed me how amazing learning can be... This episode really hit me.

You’re using a lot of buzzwords there. More just sounds like you THINK you were different and unique because that’s what all kids see. Sounds like you were just a normal kid who was interested in one particular subject because they liked the teacher. It’s not an uncommon thing. Pretty much every kid experiences that.

@@flargarbason1740 What were the buzzwords there? In all honesty. What did you think you were doing when you replied to this comment? Were you proving a point to yourself, or maybe to OP? Are you just so miserable that you need to mitigate every remarkable thing someone else feels a compulsion to share, in hopes it ignites a flare within you that's been lost to time and experience? It won't, and I speak from experience. The most you can do is nurture these same kinds of people that we once were, and hope that we can learn from them ourselves. Shun my interpretation of the truth all you'd like, but one day you'll realize all of our hopes lie within the future, and eventually you'll come to terms with that - or die alone and friendless, like it seems you're headed along the tracks for.

This one hits me more than any other especially someone who didn’t have the best self esteem everyone has a favorite teacher. I had a teacher that left me a note too and I never forget my dream because of it and she passed away so even more so. The hope teachers can give us become more than are own. My two favorite teachers Ms. Godwin 5th grade. She propelled my life long love for reading and had me read some of the best books. Ms Cagel she believed in my writing and said she can’t wait till I write a book it’s a dream I’m working on 😢

To me Lisa was one of the best and most relatable characters in the early seasons. Scenes like this move you and even leave a lesson. This show had so much soul…

You know I'm 34 now, I remember when this episode came out. There's just something about how Dustin Hoffman delivers, the whenever you feel alone line that is heartbreaking Because it's so real it still makes me cry.
