Remember, Luffy dont know anything about Nami's backstory. All he knows is that 1. She hates Arlong, and 2. Her dream is charting the world map. He got to that room, see stacks of maps which are literally Nami's life work and her supposed dream. Then he picked up a pen and noticed that theres blood on it, and immediately understands that that room cannot be allowed to exist any longer. Luffy is definitely a dumbass, but he is also a lot more intelligent than people give him credit.

It's worth noting that Arlog did not call Nami his friend. He used the word "nakama" which means a crewmate / comrade / a member of my group. Nakama is recalling a close bond between the pirates, and to Luffy it means something even more than friendship - a really close, family-like relationship. A typical word for friend is "tomodachi".

Also important to note how Oda specifically makes Luffy distinct between "nakama" (like Nami and other crew members) and "tomodachi" (like Coby) as two different groups. The translation unfortunately downplays it and bundles everyone into just "friends". I think it was best to leave the word untouched as is as nakama, just like all those chuunin jounin etc ranking names in Naruto for example. Needless to say a lot puns, subtle details and dialogue dynamics completely vanish from the series hindering the full enjoyment if you don't understand Japanese and have some context about life in Japan. Even something like the crazy fictional world of One Piece and it's characters are influenced a lot by the quirks unique to the Japanese culture, like knowledge and use of Japan specific foods, objects or body language. Oda just doesn't notice it himself how much of a daily Japanese life he oozes into the series. (Because of the unified education system across the country, closeminded island mentality, and lack of knowledge about the outside world most Japanese don't even realize that people outside in other countries don't bow, don't eat sembei, don't show "money" with an OK hand sign, don't drink oshiruko, and so on). But you can see a lot of islands and cultures depicted in the One Piece can understand words and use items unique to Japan almost like a common knowledge almost universally. Things which even in our real world that has internet globally haven't even yet become a common knowledge. Like how many people outside anime Otaku know what a sembei even is? Well, at least the subs didn't turn onigiri into jelly donuts this time..

Thing is, Luffy was screwing around for the most of that fight, trying to figure out how to really save Nami. Beating Arlong was never that big of an issue, breaking his hold on her was.

Even though Luffy is made of rubber, cutting or stabbing attacks do damage him because the rubber can be cut. So Arlong's bite on the arm was dangerous, since his teeth are sharp

Luffy never actively tries to kill his opponents. The author explains that he views them living to see their plans and dreams crashing to pieces around them to be a more fitting punishment. So Arlong and his crew aren’t dead, but the marines did arrest them all. And the word that Arlong keeps using that gets translated as “friend” is the word “nakama” in Japanese. A better translation would be a comrade or shipmate. To Luffy and his crew that word is special. One that means a friend or comrade who will work with you to achieve your goals. But to Arlong it’s just a word to call someone one his crew.

12:08 technically, he is not calling nami his friend, at least not in that sense. it's a translation thing. he uses the word nakama which is generally translated as comrade, but even then that's an incomplete translation. nakama refers to people who shares a common goal or different goals and/but they share the journey or process to reach it, work together for that sake. **yes generally they are also friends or they have at least positive relations**, but that's not required. you can be nakama with someone that you hate his guts but you tolarate to work together. if you think about it like in the sense of real pirates or piracy, for example, it will make more sense, pirates in a real world piracy are not buddies with other crew members, but they are nakama. i'll give you another example, if you watched samurai champloo, jin and mugen doesn't like each other at all (they respect each other though in this case), but they travel and work together throughout the anime, and they can be described as nakama. so in nami's perspective they cannot be considered as nakama, however arlong's perspective she can be described as one, i know it feels weird but hard to explain. also arlong extremist speciesism will make sense when you learn more about the history of fishmen, it's not surprising that he turned out to be that way, honestly i would have too. people are not just evil for evil's sake, that's a very rare quality. most villians have origin stories :) not every killer is a born psychopath who neurologically predisposed to become one.

@@Fyoken yeah but luffy also call himself a pirate but he doesn't steal from other ships or threaten and harm other people which defines what a pirate is, lol. they use the words as however they want them to mean. but i am not judging it stricly of course because it's a shounen manga, all shounen mangas are like that. naruto is not a ninja either, he is actually a wizard. and we didn't see shinigami in bleach collecting and guiding the souls of mortal to afterlife after the first few episodes, whole anime was about supernatural beings fighting amongs themselves, normal mortals and their souls weren't involved at all.

I cant imagine watching One Piece weekly. I read manga and even that is a suffering))) As for anime, i stopped at 3rd to last arc from now cause episodes was so damn short in terms of content (cause anime almost catch up to manga at that point and its same now), so i made a pause and wacthed few tens of episodes later on. Works better IMO. So kinda there is alot of bad cliffhangers but also i dont know how ito make good one in case of One Piece. Its like when u can watch it all 1100+ ep if u could, u would do it. Sadly we have restrictions))) Well, Nami arc is finally over (well almost), but new adventures still awaits - there will be small arc before real One Piece will begin (entering Grand Line).
