I wish I'd seen this video a couple of days ago as I just spent money on a wrist rest. The towel idea is actually genius and feels like an obvious solution. And yes I've been using it all wrong too. But it's never too late to learn something new and this was a very enjoyable and informative video. Thanks.

I just bought a mouse pad today and it came with a keyboard wrist rest. I found the wrist rest uncomfortable so, I was looking for how to use the dang thing and, that's how I came upon your video. Thanks for the tips. I usually do "float" over the keys as you show. After watching your video, I did try moving the KB rest up to the forearm level (rather than at rist level) and it actually straightened out my arms, the position that you show as being good for the shouldiers so, I may not trash it yet.

Is it weird that I agree with what she's saying? I had a built-in wrist rest on my last keyboard (KGB Rapidfire, just so you can get an idea) and I've switched over to a Ducky recently. I don't have a wrist rest and I honestly can't feel much of a difference after getting used to typing without it. I may even argue that my hands hurt less often now after long periods of use...
@VanmeterFL5 жыл бұрын
I was going to say a rolled sock would do the same thing. Then I saw you used a rolled sock for a mouse wrist rest. After you roll the towel, you can always place a sock over it OR any number of socks (within reason) for the height you desire.

From what I have seen and tried wrist wrest is best used on your palms and can help elevate pain from floating your arms above the keyboard.

When I'm gaming I keep my wrist in one place and only move my fingers for A,S,W and D and sometimes my pinky reaches for the L SHIFT, Control or Caps lock. So because my wrist is only in one place would it be good resting my wrist in a wrist rest or do I need to keep it hovering above my desk?
@DiscomfortFree7 жыл бұрын
Since you use such a small portion of the keyboard, it probably won't matter. But you do want to have the top of your hand and the top of your forearm on the same level.

You need keep your Wrist straight and leveled. Not bent back or down, or at an acute angle to the keyboard. Your arms should always move your hands around instead of your wresting your wrist and stretching to hit the keys with your fingers. Office Ergonomics: 1. by the way does is it bad if your hand rest on chairs armwrests ? when I type I used to rest left arm why right one floats, also for mouse movement I use chairs arm wrest + wrist rest

Yes, but arm rests should be padded. Otherwise you could end up pinching the ulnar nerve at the elbow.

i want to float my arm over the keyboard but that gets tiring and hard. is there a way that i can make it easy and keep myself from getting problems later on. Thank you!
@DiscomfortFree4 жыл бұрын
You want to position yourself so that your upper arms are hanging straight down and a keyboard height that is comfortable around 90 degrees.
@SianaGearz5 жыл бұрын
So... but i'm not very comfortable hovering my hands above the keyboard. What do i do now? I can do that while typing in short bursts and apparently i even do that subconsciously usually but not during most other activities like gaming and right-hand creative tasks like graphics editing. Also i experience finger pain when the keyboard is flat on the desk and less so when it's raised up. Why is that? The keyboard is a red-stem switch mechanical (linear, low-force), the front row of the keyboard sits 29mm top of keycap to desk surface, while number row is 36/48mm. I have a prior left hand injury from a mountain biking accident a decade back, which doesn't limit my movement range, but does limit control and there is occasional pain.
@DiscomfortFree5 жыл бұрын
Here's the thing... You need to have your keyboard close enough that your upper arms are straight down. If you are reaching forward and trying to hover, naturally your arms will feel uncomfortable. You need to then arrange so that your keyboard is at a comfortable height - either by table height or chair height. Ideally the forearm should be close to 90 degrees to the upper arm. If it is not then adust the angle of the keyboard so that the back of the forearm and the back of the hand are in a straight line.

@DiscomfortFree7 жыл бұрын
Hello Andrea, I'm sorry but I am really swamped right now. Please note that it is your forearm muscles that move your wrist and fingers. Remember, your forearm muscles are getting lots of exercise and most people don't realize how tight they are until they start "talking" to you. Once your muscles are loosed up, the pain should go away.

You want your upper arms hanging down and your forearms at a right angle as much as possible. Look up ergonomics. Also if you don't stop typing at least 5 minutes every 20 minutes you are drying out the lubrication in the the tendon sheaths in the carpal tunnel. This will cause you a lot of future problems. Also you seem to think it is a strenuous thing it is not. Resting wrists while typing produces far more tension in your muscles and tendons.

Uhm, no. The point of having a wrist rest is to raise and support your hands. If you rest your hands on the desk you're straining your wrists. If you keep your hand in the air, you're straining your arms for no reason. I tried a towel before, but my hands just sink down into it, it's useless. For now I'm using an external disk carrying case, it's the perfect height and rigidness... it works for the left hand. But for both hands typing I need something wider, so I probably have to make something out of wood and eva.
@DiscomfortFree4 жыл бұрын
You won't strain your arms if you are close enough to the keyboard so your upper arms hang down.
@lmv92x4 жыл бұрын
@@DiscomfortFree I would still have to keep my hands lifted, regardless of the distance. If you mean keeping my elbows below the desk and resting the wrists on the table, then I would have to turn my wrists upside, which not only strains them, but also makes it awkward to reach the upper keys. Personally, it's much more confortable to keep my hands leveled with the keyboard, with something beneath the palm of my hand.
@DiscomfortFree4 жыл бұрын
@@lmv92x Okay, but I do not mean reating the wrists on the table at all.
