Ray Bradbury! Read The Illustrated Man & much when I was nine. And of course Fahrenheit 451 was required reading in school along with 1984 et al. Brilliant anthology (TIM, including The Veldt), and much of his stuff was visionary indeed. Was thrilled to find so much of his work adapted for radio, TV, films, etc.

Strange , I got the feeling that nobody knew who Ray Bradbury was ! I first read him as a teen, around 1964 . Something Wicked This Way Comes is one of his best stories.

I met Ray three times, first in '74. He loved to talk and be seen. He probably spoke to more groups than anyone but stump preachers. In a way, writing was his religion.

Ray Bradbury appeared at Mt San Antonio College in the bookstore, where he was the guest author talking about how to become a writer. About a dozen students attended. I was fortunate to sit just one chair away from him. It was either 1972 or 1973.

A little surprising that Groucho didn't know who Bradbury was, even after Marian Chronicles and Fahrenheit. Grouch was well read.. Obviously Bradbury was not as well known then as now, but he was reasonably well known.

Groucho's reaction when Bradbury says his mother went to school with Jack Benny had me cracking up. It's probably lost on most people today. Jack Benny would claim to be 39 whenever someone asked, they even did a bit on his show where he was a contestant on You Bet Your Life and Groucho asked him how old Jack Benny really is and Jack was torn between winning the money and revealing his age. But, what struck me as particularly funny is that Groucho seemed to do Jack's trademark silent stare before finally responding. They knew each other back in Vaudeville before both rising to legendary heights.

Dirk Diggler : This title was a marketing ploy used by used car dealers in 1950’s when trying to fanagel a prospective customer into thinking a car was barely driven and in still NEW condition! The line went usually something like this: “This vehicle was only owned by a little old lady in Pasadena who only drove it to the corner grocery store to buy milk....on weekends”! This “line” was quickly picked up by the comedians of the time to describe a shister or “con man “ in their routines” The line quickly became a popular catch phrase at the time!

Not much of a game show. Ray Bradbury at 35 was quite an unexpected competitor. Especially given how successful he is seen now versus contemporaneously with his life. Although he was one of those cliche sci-fi authors where every planet was just another Earth with a different colored lens filter and naked wenches painted the same color. He had astronauts wandering Venus without protective suits, or even helmets ffs.

Bradbury didn't even consider himself a sci-fi writer and wrote more about the human condition. He also played a major role in bringing legitimate "sci-fi" into the mainstream. But, I can understand your point. Like I say, these things are subjective. I just think it's unfair to dismiss him as a hack.

*That's because Ray wasn't a science fiction author in the conventional sense, he was more of a classical writer who used earth like world's as backdrops for brilliantly composed human interest stories, he didn't go down the advanced technology route and it's associated flowery irrelevant language, "rocket" was as complicated as it ever got in his books which made them such a pleasure to read.*
