Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life

Күн бұрын

COUPLE #1: Ida Taylor, who ran away from a cornfield as a young girl / Charles McLaughlin, a vaguely self-described "entrepeneur"
COUPLE #2: Oney Boren, wife of an oil man / John Granger, whose beard gets in the soup
Ida Taylor is a real hoot, especially during the quiz segment. There's a fantastically funny outtake of her in the "stag reel" for this season (originally released by Shout Factory as a bonus on one of their two great YBYL DVD sets from a decade ago). It starts 5:57 into this video if the link doesn't start where it's supposed to (just make sure you play it to the end-- it's Ida's last line that's the real killer!):

I was hoping to see this episode of 'YBYL' again because of one Miss Ida Taylor! I love the no-nonsense manner in which she deals with life, and her fellow contestant, the blowhard who didn't know any of the answers (and she called him out too!) I hope she got her 'libation' Miss Taylor, and lived a wonderful life too. 💖

Groucho kept interrupting her and destroyed the flow of her story. Also, I am not sure that people understood what she was talking about.

Wrong Joe. Ida was as real as the earth and sky which you're still figuring out where they meet.

This whole episode seemed too contrived, and so making it one of my least favorite. No one on the staff stopped her from chewing gum? The demitasse joke was almost a set up for the bigger joke of a "dictionary quiz." The contrast in demeanor and style between the couples was too sharp.

The show is 65 years old. People back then were very different then folks today. Things were more accepted then, verses now!!

Groucho has been gone a long time, but with the brains of a flea you probably didn't know that. He didn't slip, he was wittier than most of us, but in your case the only 'slip' was on a banana peel.
