I think she could have been -- she was almost theatrically "in character." It is true that Groucho's show wasn't 100% the spontaneous ad-lib fest it was marketed as. A lot of true off-the-cuff things did go on, and Groucho was definitely a master of the quick comeback, but he was often intentionally set up with humurous situations.

She only got a few laughs about the word libation once she understood what it meant;, but the audience was never on her side.
