This was Melinda's last appearance on YBYL. Though you'd never be able to tell from what's on screen, she wasn't very happy being pushed into the spotlight this way by her father (just as Groucho wasn't very happy being pushed into show business by his mother). Here she does a charming duet of "Put on a Happy Face" with Broadway song-and-dance star (and later game show host) Bobby Van.

COUPLE #1: Lydia Valenzuela, wife of a diesel mechanic / Alexander Von Mirbach, Russian nobleman

In 1971 when I was 13, I wrote a letter to Bobby Van starring in No No Nanette. I told him my parents were taking me to see the show. He wrote back with a backstage pass. He was so nice. Over the next two years whenever we went to NY we stopped into see him. He was so nice to my parents and me. When he went back to California he was my pen pal. For a star he was a truly nice human being.

Remember watching this.. in 11th grade. Grew up to be a jazz musician.. as someone who has good ears I can testify that not only is Melinda what the girls I remember looking and acting like (nowhere to be seen today...so sorely missed)...but she sings her solo bit in perfect tune..it's not that easy a bridge to sail into coming up from below and she nailed it! Have backed several adult singers who couldn't sing this well..... This show and "What's My Line" have an intellect level higher than perhaps many countries today...especially, when Steve Allen was on the WML Panel.

You can see the love Grocho had for his daughter Melinda. I remember my parents watching Grocho when I was young, and I enjoyed this show myself. Grocho was one of the best comedians ever, and in movies with his brothers they were all hilarious. I couldn't imagine growing up in the era they did, and going into show business. At first I bet he had many of hungry day's trying to get in show business, but also lots of fun with his brothers. Thanks, John G.

Sister Veronica It's unfortunate for Groucho fans (but, of course, fully up to Melinda) that she decided to retreat from the public eye more or less completely in the 1960s. I would love to hear her interviewed in a serious way about Groucho, but she's the only one of his three kids who's made a point of keeping silent, ironic considering that she was the best known to the public of his three kids, thanks to her many appearances on YBYL. I bought the DVD release of Groucho in a TV production of "The Mikado", despite having absolutely no interest in Gilbert and Sullivan whatsoever, solely because it included a brief audio interview with Melinda as a bonus (she had a small part in the show). This is almost the only example I'm aware of where Melinda talked about Groucho in public after the 1960s, so I had to hear it. Unfortunately, she doesn't say much of interest, focusing entirely on the production itself and talking very little about her father.

@Jourell1
@Jourell1 7 жыл бұрын
Well, the show was partly scripted but still yes, he does do better here than when he's expected to more conform to what was on the page, like a Hollywood movie. I remember watching the documentary, The Unknown Marx brothers which related how in their vaudeville days the brothers would go crazy in the theatre, improvising wildly, running up and down the isles, etc. to paraphrase what one anonymous theatre goes later told (I think) Bill Marx- other vaudeville comedians of that era were a breath of fresh air, the Marx brothers were a hurricane.

This show wasn't so much about the game, which continuously changed during the run of the series, but was actually about the contestants, and their interaction with Groucho Marx. Although it can be said many of these folks were projecting a bit over the years, it's still, in my opinion, an amazing study in sociology.

A friend of mine, now deceased, said he went to a filming of YBYL. The crew filmed for more than an hour to get the half-hour show. The director allowed Groucho to ad-lib as much as he wanted, and they would trim it down in editing. They also took out any pauses, in case Groucho needed a moment to think of a funny quip. The magic of Hollywood.

@@ealswytheangelicrealms You sound very bitter, but the old saying was true then as it is now, "It's not what you know, it's who you know that counts. This is also a biblical truth. Read the story of David and Goliath in I Samuel 17, particularly vss. 33 and 45; "And Saul said to David, You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth...Then David said to the Philistine, You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Hosts, the God of the armys of Israel, whom you have defied. " In a nutshell, the point is that Goliath knew war, but David knew God. In addition, I encourage you to get over your bitterness. It is a sin and will keep a person out of heaven, be they sinner or saint. This is based on Christ's words found in Matthew 7:14,15 ( part of the Sermon on the Mount and at the end of the Lord's prayer). "For if you forgive men their trespasses / sins (against you), your heavenly Father also will forgive you, but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will you Father forgive your trespasses." Friend, don't harbor bitterness in your heart against anyone, whether God or man, institution or industry. It will eat at you inside and will cause physical and mental problems.

I wonder if there was any consideration of making her a mousekateer. She certainly looked, sang and danced the part. And very well spoken. I am aware though that she wasn't crazy about performing, so perhaps that was not explored.

You're right. Miriam was Groucho's eldest daughter born 19 May 1937. In two specials about the brothers she admits that she's a recovering alcoholic and has been sober many years. Those specials here on KZbin is "The One, the Only...Groucho" (1991), plus "The Unknown Marx Brothers" (1993)

Melinda's relationship with her father deteriorated over the years, as evident on this show she would seem to get exasperated with his sarcasm and jokes, as did Groucho's wives. I think their relationship improved years later.

Ladies and gentlemen,THIS IS ENTERTAINMENT!!!!!!!!!! Even Fenneman gets in on the act with a nice joke or two. You also get a good intellectual stimulus. People claim that the American public wouldn't watch "stuff like this nowadays". But why are the American people,and many others,watching the old shows by the droves on cable and here on You Tube? Please answer that! It's because many folks are yearning and hungering for good,clean,entertaining,intellectual and-dare I say-Godly programming. Subjects like sex can be discussed in a wonderful fashion within these guidelines. Hey,I love and respect everyone out there,but our world and nation must return to Godly principles.Those Godly principles are like the direct object in a sentence,while wholesome shows and plays are like the indirect object. Before I close,listen to Keely Smith sing. WOW!!!!!!!!!!! Richard Rhoden

Joe Rhoden It's only older Americans who are wanting to watch these things because they grew up with this and not surprisingly miss it. Millennials for the most part want nothing to do with it.

Why the leap to "godliness"? To me, it's about a vanished America, an America that wasn't perfect, but always aspiring to be the best through and through - heart and soul - with room for all types of people - striving for greatness and goodness equally. (None of this hostile "U-S-A" or MAGA crap.). This show reflects a level of civil society and a culture that's all but dead, and that's why it attracts audiences even today.

I also heard that Melinda Marx was uncomfortable being pushed into doing appearances. She was talented but a reluctant performer, it seems. Off screen, Groucho wasn't exactly a nice guy if his ex-wives are to be believed. He could be cruel and insulting, and I wouldn't be surprised if he threw a few of his verbal darts at Melinda from time to time. .

Later in life Groucho admitted his constant sarcasm negatively impacted his marriages. It seems, from what I've read, his mother made it clear she really didn't like him that much, something that I suspect turned him into a cynic early on.

Melinda seems a bit frayed. She was not the first victim of Groucho's textbook narcisism, a disorder for which there is no cure. For years people appealed, subtley or outright, toGroucho to cease his tedious interruptions, but he was unable to share his space and disliked being upstaged. As was necessary, he was thinking of what he must say rapid fire, and his repertoire was so vast. It was generally overwhelming and not always kind.

I disagree with Marx on Israel and anti Islamists, anti Cmmunist, anti Capitalist Egyptian Nationalists Nasser, but Groucho was the funniest Jewish comedian ever. His end of life care by his vile wife, was sick how he was abused because he could not walk far or well. This era was the best until they killed Kennedy then all changed for the worse.
