I've got the parts for the ship coming right now (for about $30 altogether with a couple of minor couple substitutions). I really like some of the customizations you've made here, particularly the two flags on the mast and the pyramids on the shields. I've been scouring Brick Link and the other sites looking for a selection of 10 Viking shields that I can get at reasonable prices but it's looking like getting 10 will run about $50-$60, so I might keep it to 5 and only put them on the visible side on my shelf. The shields and minifigs are gonna kill me for this one.
@CraftedBricks Жыл бұрын
It's so good to hear that you are taking this project on, I think you will be very happy with the finished result. I was facing the same issue with the expensive shields, hence my option of running with 10 of the standard metalic shields and using the 1x1 spikes to decorate them. I was hoping that with the release of the Viking Village set that Lego would offer the shields from that set via Pick a Brick, but I juts checked and they are not coming up, maybe that will change in the future. All the best with your build!
@hettbeans Жыл бұрын
@@CraftedBricks I ended up getting a few of the Viking shield print 2x2 round tiles, which can stack on top of the round gray shields in use here. I think those are the best cheap solution. I also nabbed a few different flag colors to play with, and I got alternate sail pieces to make a folded up white/red striped sail (I replaced all the sail pieces with tan/brick yellow except for the 3x 1x2 plates, which I got in red). All ordered tonight from Bricklink.
@CraftedBricks Жыл бұрын
Awesome! ...and it is refreshing to hear from someone who clearly knows what they are doing with BrickLink! E.g. ordering alternate colours and pieces to experiment with. I often do the same thing. Any parts that I don't use for a build go into my spares and can be used for another project.
@hettbeans Жыл бұрын
@@CraftedBricks This whole thing came out really great IMO. The sail looks fantastic in tan/brick yellow and printed shields (or stickers on 2x2 round tiles, in this case) really make a huge difference. I also used a couple of extra strings to add the additional forward and rear rigging that was missing in the original design, which I think really makes a big impact. I'm gonna send you some pics on Instagram.

@@CraftedBricks Well I got my parts! But I accidentally ordered a bunch of modified plates in the wrong color, so I'm back to waiting on those parts lol Importantly, I'm already lost on your mod instructions: "1. When completing steps 1-5 in Jonas's instructions, add / swap in the black plates I show in step 1 of my file." This is actually pretty vague, as one cannot both add *and* swap accurately without explicit instruction 😅
@CraftedBricks Жыл бұрын
@@drauncj - nice one and that is frustrating re your BrickLink order, it happens from time to time to all of us. I've miss ordered I'm the past myself 🤔 Re my instructions, you have to look at my Studio file, my notes and Jonas's instructions at the same time as you are building. What I've said will make complete sense when you get to this step as you are both adding new black plates missing from Jonas's model per what I've shown in my model file, and swapping out some of the coloured plates Jonas has shown in his instructions for equivalent black parts.

Aww that is so sweet to hear, thank you! Unfortunately with just how much work goes into most of my videos it's not possible to upload more. I'm also planning to slow down on making video content so I have time to do Lego design work. I can't believe it's September already and I've not designed a new model or designed significant mod this year. So I'd better get onto it! Ps - I'm working on my blog site in the background. When it's ready I hope that's will be an easier way to share my thoughts and ideas on our Lego hobby. : )

That is so kind of you Luis, thank you for comment and feedback! I'm definitely going to keep making videos, but my publishing frequency will slow down as I need more time to do Lego design work. But that's ok I hope to double down on video quality over quantity. I will start filming my next build this weekend! Have a good week : )

This is such a good improvement! I remember looking into these instructions a while back, and your improvements just make it even better! Regarding your addition of an extra row of bricks along the bottom of the ship: sometimes with scale modeling it's more important to recreate the feeling of the original the vessel, rather than the accurate proportions. And additional role of bricks may disrupt the proportions slightly, but it improves how the vessel appears. Similarly, Hot Wheels cars have oversized wheels because for some reason it looks better to the human eye.
@CraftedBricks6 ай бұрын
Thanks for commenting. And I'm glad you liked my mods or updates to the original and you are right, to the human eye this model looks much better with the increased hull free-board. The original just looked a little under-done and not quite right. Have a superb weekend ahead!

What an excellent design and professional video with all the proper references (as a university librarian I approve! 😉). My first thought was that I would like to build this ship, but the proper sail probably has to come from far away and it might be a hassle or expensive. But then I noticed the company that makes the sails is from the Netherlands, my home country! Perhaps Odin is trying to tell me something..
@CraftedBricks11 ай бұрын
Haha what a superb comment Joost - your line about Odin trying to tell you something made me smile and laugh, thank you! I think this is worthy project to take on, months on I still look at this Viking longship on display and it brings a smile to my face. I think you will feel the same if you build it. All the best!

I have already built Jonas Kramm's base model. It is beautiful and stately and much better than the Lego 3-in-1, but lacks some stability underneath. I corrected this by attaching plates to the underside of the hull, but your design seems a much more elegant solution. Now I am definitely thinking of ordering the extra parts you suggest. For shields, I like the sunburst shield from LotR Eomer. It goes really well with the green sail. I also like the Eomer helmet for my rowers. This minifigure and his accessories are ridiculously expensive now (unless you cheat like me and buy Chinese knock-offs. ;-) [Oh, by the way, I would never buy mocs from China. I know they steal from fan designers. I only buy retired Lego or loose parts.]
@CraftedBricks Жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew, great idea on adding the additional plates underneath, I did the same with my modified version. As for the LotR sunburst shields I love those and agree they would work well with this model! They expensive though! Helmet looks good too. the pricing for minifigures on BrickLink drives me mad sometimes, I was lucky that I bought one of the Viking collectable minifigures very early on, so that's what I used for my tiller man. Re MOCs from China, I agree and stay away from them too! But I do occasionally buy CaDa sets as I know they only make sets they design themselves OR they actively partner with known MOC designers and bring their design s to market paying the designer commissions. All good, and thanks for commenting!

The parts list is an xml file that you can open in something like Notepad (windows pc) and use to create a Wanted list in BrickLink to order the parts. I also provided a version of the parts (a .io file) that you can open in Studio. You can download Studio here: www.bricklink.com/v3/studio/download.page

This is such a great MOC. I like your improvements and have borrowed some but it was too confusing to order parts to make the extra layer. I found everything on pick a brick but will wait to get a few more minis once brick link has the new viking pieces. This is going to look so good with the new viking village! A nice raiding faction to go after the royal bakeries sweet treats... they will have sweet snacks in the treasure chest.

Hi Jacob, I'm very pleased to hear you are going to build this! It is a delightful piece! For the hull layer and my mods you will be able to use the .xml file to create a Wanted list in BrickLink to order the parts you need. Was ordering from BrickLink the confusing part? If so how can I help?

@@CraftedBricks I guress it is because I have a basic PC and I don't think I can read them, I opened one and had somewhat of a list of parts but too much work to go through pick a brick. (I already spent a long time going through all the other parts) I am not sure how to use the list in bricklink, but either way its going to look good and with some other accessories and animals I got my total had reached enough! thanks for the review though. I will be upgrading the bow, spikes, rudder... Lego really should have approved this one, its 10x the 3 in 1 creator model. I might consider upgrading the bottom layer when I get a few torsos to man the craft.

I've included a parts list in the Google drive folder I mentioned in the video (link is the videos description) for those extra parts. I think you will be really happy with this, it is a very good looking model!

Hi there - just letting you know that I've uploaded 'version 2' files for my modified version of Jonas's Viking Longship to the Google drive folder for this project. Another builder pointed out that my hull extension needed more support and on inspection I realised that I had not uploaded the very latest version of my Studio files. The change is not huge but will make things better if you are building my modified version. The last file in the Google drive folder shows the changes I've made to the stern piece and hull extension - parts are in white. Let me know if you need any support with this, cheers, Simon
