You sir, are part of the reason I made the decision to really make a go of music. I don't want to look back at my life and regret not making things happen. And it took having to get divorced, get focused, regain my self-confidence and really double my efforts to get a band going that I am in charge of, handling the business side of it, learning how to copyright, and distribute music online. I am happy to report that after roughly 2 years of hard work, I am doing shows, I am writing new tunes, I have a band that I am proud of, with musicians that are on the same level as me in terms of passion and ability. Getting to see you on the Chapman Guitars West Coast Tour, and then NAMM was a real treat, and something I knew I couldn't pass up when I got the opportunity to go. I am still broke, paying my ex wife a lot of money, but it keeps my kids taken care of, and I get to balance all of this with being a father. It's just amazing. Your story has been an inspiration to me and helped get me off my ass and take action, and I am infinitely happier for it! Thank you for existing on this planet, and putting yourself in a position where you can be an inspiration to so many others!

+Rob Chapman hey rob I have tried doing similar stuff to record but my problem being a teenager who is to young to get a job is that I cant use garage band because i don't have a Mac. But even recording into things like audacity which is free, using a like 1984 karaoke mic into my laptop is that I have no idea how to get rid of the hum that accompanies any amount of gain. How did you get by this and how do you now. I really want to do what you have done with your life and would appreciate any help you could give. Thanks a lot man :)

Rob, you are completely right. I wanted to write and make music. So bought a mic and recorded with that and my guitar in to a laptop. Afterwards I dropped it on youtube, and one week ago a got a call that a record label saw my video and now i'm talking trough the last things to get signed in. My dream just came true. Dream big, work hard and just do it. And someday you will be glad that you just damn started. Love your videos and the andertons stuff too, hope that I can ever come around to get an awesome strat. As a Musician and Visual artist who wants to teach painting in the post secondary academic world, I've learned you have to adapt. Super helpful message! You can't let money, time, or expectations for things to happen get in the way. Just go out and do it whatever way you can. I currently work a full time day job to save enough for grad school so I can get my Masters and become a full time Art Professor. Follow your passion and do what you love!

One of the things I love about your channel Rob is keeping it real and giving back to people. Your music style is different than mine, but it doesn't matter does it! We are all trying to achieve our level of success to scratch our creative itch. Bravo for saying it was cheap gear that got you going and having a good attitude. Our biggest constraint on our success is ourselves. Don't forget our family, but also reach for your dreams. Whether that's doing an open mike gig and playing three songs or trying to be heard in the new internet music scene. The Beatles were good until they went to Hamburg and worked their ass off to be great. it's Blu-Tack made by Bostick in the US.

I really wish I can work it out to get to the amazing place you are right now and wish you the best with the company, Dorje, your wife and your amazing life. Thanks for making us love this amazing thing called music.

I can't tell you how much this helped me and inspired me, I've been stuck in trying to get absolutely the best gear, so when the time comes to record, there's no obstacles, but I'm creating one just by doing that. I've spent so much time trying to get that stuff, I haven't even played or progressed. Just thank you Rob, you deserve everything you have today and stay humble and kind as always. Mason

Very true! The key with obstacles is to find a creative way around it and to not think of them as limitations. When my band started none of us had expansive gear (and after a few years we still don't), we couldn't find a bass player who could play our songs so we made up our own solution to "substitute" a bassist. I sold most of my gear way under price to pay for studio time, because we needed a demo (what turned into an full lenght album) so booker would let us play live. And so far it was all worth it and the only complaint we ever got about our live sound was from a bassist who felt expandable after seeing us.

Thanks for such an inspiring motivational. I played for 5 years during my teens, then had to take an 18 years hiatus. Now at 40 years of age, Im back at it again. I bought a MIM strat and an Ovation balladeer, they will do for now. One thing I have noticed is the 40yr old version of myself is gaining much more of an understanding of the guitar than the 19 yr old version ever did, although regaining the speed and dexterity in the hands is coming slowly compared to my younger self. Its never too late, and I say even if you are 70 and want to learn, then go for it!!

This is a video I needed to watch. In a couple weeks, I have my audition for University. I need to record, mix and produce two original songs as my portfolio. I keep on bogging myself down in the mindset of "I can't afford a $1900 mic pre or a $300 mic, I can't do it" I've got to stop making excuses for that sort of thing. I'm blessed enough to have family that want to see me succeed and be happy, to block myself off is just an insult to their love. Thanks for the pep-talk Chappers, you're than Man, the Legend, The MonkeyLord. :)

Started out with a $200 Yamaha Pacifica. Borrowed an Ashton bass amp from my grandpa and a Line 6 POD from my uncle. Despite my somewhat crappy rig, and after 3 years of playing, I got asked to join my schools band for the top musicians in the school! I might have got better gear as of late (Including my Chapman ML-1 BEA), but if it wasn't for my hard work and countless hours of practice I never would be where I am today! Had a gig just last night! Performing for hundreds of people is so satisfying! Keep rocking Rob! You're such an inspiration! \m/

This actually helps, I don't really want to go into details, but I recently bought a guitar on finance so I had a reason to get up in the morning, to pay it off. Wasn't doing too great then, I worked my ass off to get into a music collage, and I finally feel like I might be getting somewhere. These videos helped me realise that everyone has to work for what they want, it helps keep me grounded. So thanks Rob. ;D

When i started playing guitar i was lucky in one area .. i had family members that are electricians and helped me read old fender blue prints and to build my own . I wanted a tele and was saving up and my great uncle surprised me one day with a hand built one . I kept all of this to this day, but i have added more gear along the way.

Great thoughts and advice, Rob. One thought I'll add specific to getting over the hurdle from bedroom player to gigging is: don't let lack of gear budget stand in the way of this. Yes, there's a certain amount of gear needed beyond playing at home, but it's much more attainable than you think. A Squier Strat played into a Zoom multi effects pedal thru a second hand 40 W SS amp might get scoffs from other toob snob guitar players, but 97% of the audience doesn't hear the difference or care. Just have solid chops, have fun, and the audience will too.

I've recorded several demos with a similar, if not the same, microphone straight into my old Acer laptop and Audacity. I have 30 or so guitars not, but I started out with a Hondo 2(which I still have and will never part with) and a BC Rich amp that came with a kit you used to be able to purchase from FYE. I am a full time musician, but I can't say I'm professional yet. Money, is never a hindrance though. I've made connections, have friends with studios and degrees in music engineering and performance, I've got the gear. I think what holds me back from getting a solid piece of art out is being a perfectionist . Now that I have a solid group of friends with positive attitudes and more talent than they know what to do with I feel like we can take over the world. Thanks for the words of wisdom as always, Rob!

Need only eight guitars? I'd better persuade my wife that I need another two guitars, Robbie said so!..... boy I love good excuses and shifting the blame. But your video really hits this excuse problem on the head. Here in Australia if you want to REALLY do something it's only the guy looking back at you in the mirror (yourself) that can stop you!!!! So as Rob says, knuckle under and use that energy for making excuses to make your dream happen. It won't be overnight, it'll be tough, but boy the journey alone is tremendous and character building. All you guys/gals take control and have a great life, we're all only here once!!

This video did motivate me indeed. I'm kinda in a rough situation: budget's low, all the band members have back stabbed me and tried putting me on bass instead of guitar, so they get all the attention. But it's fine, you've helped me to not give a fuck, but carry on. Thank you so much Rob! You've helped me through my best and my worst.

Ok, this may be a bit to personal to talk about for me, but I feel this is the right forum and the right time to respond, to some thoughts that I've had for a long time. And now you've made a video about it Rob, so thank you for that. I've played music, since I was about 13 or 14 years old. Today I am 39 years old, and yes I don't have a lot of gear. So whenever I get a new piece of gear, I really think a lot about getting something that can help me out in more ways than just one. My soundcard for instance is a Line6 UX1 with one mic input, one instrument input, one line input and one analog outs. And it comes with some really helpfull software to help me get a lot of different guitar and bass tones, even for vocals. And the price was about 100 £. That piece of gear to me is as valuable as that Phillips mic, you got Rob. So to all who may read my comment, I just want to say that nothing is impossible. You just have to think about what you want to achieve. And then use what you've got. I have an old beat up Selmer amp in my basement and I think the tubes in it are dead, and I haven't had the money to fix it. So my Line6 UX1 has been a lifesafer for me.

Great video, as always although I really liked the ocean background of the last one. There is a documentary about Keith Richard on Netflix called "Under the Influence." He said the the guitar for "Street Fighting Man" was just an acoustic guitar that he recorded on a small tape recorder and just turned up the gain on the recorder and over drove it. He takes a cassette recorder and an acoustic guitar in the documentary and demonstrates it. I thought about that story when you told your story about your mic. The Stones were already famous and well off by the time Street Fighting Man was recorded, yet the unique sound of the guitar on their hit was created by using cheap equipment in a creative way.

It's pretty bad ass. Got mine from Riff City. They set it up, and it played right out of the box (all three boxes - shipping was stout). It's lighter than I had thought it would be. If you're a Strat player, it's a little strange to play it in your lap, but you get used to it quick (it's comfortable). It's a pretty fast player and the "passive aggressive" pickups sound nice through all my amps so far: Fender Bassman, Blues Jr., Princeton Chorus, Carr HammerHead MkII, Marshal 410H, and even my DT25. The quality is unbelievable for guitar under $1k. And the most important part... it's blue. :-) Cheers.

+Stratomacaster what would you say the fretboard/fingerboard is like? It sounds nuts but I briefly owned an epiphone les paul and either my fingers started sweating glue or the fretboard was 'different'. It was a rosewood board but just seemed to make my fingers sticky, slides were horrible and bends too, couldnt work out if it was oozing some form of something from the fingerboard or what, but no matter how much cleaning/fretboard scraping was done it never improved!

Such great advice. We are our own worse enemy. I bought an Epiphone Starter pack just to have something to play while I had $20 a week set aside with direct deposit until I had my dream rig. And when I opened the Starter box, two of the frets had fallen out of the neck and were laying in the bottom of the wrapping. THAT is a piece of shit. I took it back, they fixed it and the tech actually gave it a pro set up for my trouble and not actually getting a refund. That pro setup made it so much easier to play because it had a super high action out of the box, and if that would not have happened, it would have discouraged me to the point of quitting. Just too hard to play. SO there is a good example if keeping a full head of steam and not letting things get in your way. I played my first public show at an open talent night at church last month (I don't think they liked my choice of cover of Warpigs) but it was in front of 50 people or so. I loved it.

When I first started playing, I always blamed my crappy guitar and amp. So when I got a decent guitar, I knew that it was not my gear that was to blame for me sounding like crap. It was myself. Thats what prompted me to practice harder.
