That's the beauty of the downspouts folded up, Mike, they allow air flow side to side and through the pool noodles. When you have a sealed tub holes should be cut into the sides as overflow venting and air circulation. But, I see your point of adding the bubbler if there are no other air flow options. Side venting is soooooo important. Thanks for being thoughtful on other solutions too.

Had a wonderful dill baby potato dish last night. Of course the dill was from our indoor hydroponics. Our thyme, basil, bok choy, lettuces, parsley, and cilantro are all doing great. Mike, thank you for ALL of your great videos and content. Recently, my wife and I began our journey with hydroponics. To get a jump start; instead of waiting for our seed starts, she moved to purchase a variety of starts sets from a big box store. Myself, I am under the impression (once they had established themselves in the system) to trim off initial growth and discard (compost pile). Then allow for a fresh growth, to then harvest/consume. Is this a good idea? Or might I be over thinking the 'unknowns' from big box store plants (chemicals and such in their establishment and processing, before reaching the point of sale)?

I start some of mine that way for a head start too. It just gets kind of expensive with the amount of stuff I grow as prices go up so I start from seed. Most of the tomato plants, I get at the big box stores.

Have you tried aeroponics..? The roots are suspended in the air and the nutrient solution is sprayed (at specific intervals) onto the roots...aeroponics has many advantages over hydroponics...

Yes, aeroponics is great. It does take more in line of pumps and timers so I use this channel to start everyone off with a more simple approach.

Thanks Jeff. Unfortunately the guy that made the lights I am using stopped. I would go with a full spectrum LED light. You could also start with LED shop lights from Home Depot or Lowes.

The person that was making the lights I used stopped production. I will be experimenting with new ones. LED shop lights from the home improvement store is also an option.

It’s nice to see that you sometimes have this trouble at first too. I’ve been amazed at how well plants will come back! I pulled some extra dill sprouts that I just pulled without caring for roots. I just tossed in some water to see what happened. They grew roots and are growing new fronds too! Plants are amazing!

Food Grade vs Non-Food Grade: It seems to me, if one is going to use a container "ONLY" for like growing plants, vegetables, trees or storing nutrients in them, then "NON-FOOD GRADE" containers would be of choice. Otherwise, if one is going to be storing food, like meats, vegetables, or grain products, then by all means use the "FOOD GRADE" containers. But would not Mylar bags, vacuumed sealed & then placed into the a "FOOD GRADE" container be of better choice? That way one could use the container to get water in if needed during the Apocalypses. Seriously, if not freezing or cooking food for storage in the containers, then use the NON-FOOD GRADE containers. I think some have overly done the the Food Grade container question, yes, who knows what the container may be used for in the future. But once you are done using any container, just destroy and get rid of it. Real Simple. In my humble old-age opinion.

Have you considered that the chemicals may leach out of the plastic (of non food grade) into the nutrient solution and absorbed by the plant...there is the potential for the plant to absorb toxic chemicals... Just a thought...

@@OleanderStarr so, then, it's ok to smoke cigarettes because the air is polluted already..? Most people, using container type methods, are using chemical nutrients that can cause an overabundance of chemicals to leach out of the plastics; one reason you should be careful of the plastics that you use...and the fact that there are a lot of pollutants in the air and water (I use distilled water; I distill my own water) is even more reason to make sure your plastics and water has as few pollutants as possible...

Hey Dave! No, in my experience it will never grow back to any substantial size. You are better off starting a new plant. Regrowing is a fun experiment but not really worth it.

Yes, you can spray paint them. Painting the top where the lettuce will be sitting is a personal preference you need to make.

Cutting off a portion of the leaves during transplanting will help...transplanting puts a lot of strain on the root; by cutting off some of the leaves it reduces the amount of strain put on the root...

Hey, just giving people options. Aeration is better if you can do it, but not necessary. I have about 20 to 40 drainpipes going at once, that would be a lot of hoses and a large pump if I attempted to aerate it all.

you can skip the air pump just leave a quarter inch gap so the roots can breath and you will have a lot less noise

I have done kratky for over 8 years. Most of my set up is off grid. I only have 2 containers with an air stone and it does seem to do better than when I do straight kratky though.

Hi Mike, thanks for your videos. My daughter is on day 21 of her 7th grade science fair experiment comparing lettuce grown hydroponically to conventionally. We purchased a Kratky set to grow in mason jars. Also purchased a $10 grow light on Amazon to grow indoors, using Flora Grow hyd. solution. The seedlings started off well, but they haven't made it past the seedling stage with 2 leaves each and 3/6 died. Any ideas for us? Should she have sprouted the seeds first and then put the seedlings in the hydroponic solution. Maybe our house is not warm enough? Thermostat at 68. Maybe the light wasn't very good? Maybe the seeds were not good? Currently the seedlings grown in soil are growing better, they just took longer to sprout. Thanks

Yes, the temperature is a little cool but should still be ok. I don't care for most of the cheap grow lights. I use the LED shop lights. They have many at reasonable prices, don't get hot and put out a good amount of light. I start my seedlings in "seed starting potting soil" and then transfer them to the hydroponics.
