I’m 72 & I try to have a golf hold, not grip, on my clubs about a 2-3 on a scale of 1-10! I follow “The Easiest Swing” of Brian Sparks and he advocates referring to the “golf grip” as a “golf hold”, instead, because he believes thinking “grip” bring tension into the hands, arms, and upper body. Brian also advocates practicing your finish and being able to hold it in balance. It will help you swing easy with a lighter grip (hold) and improved distance & accuracy of drives & approach shots! ⛳️

I recently posted a comment regarding the “Easiest Swing” method developed by Brian Sparks before reading your comments similar to mine. You are spot on and a believer as I am that Brian’s method has saved many golfers the frustration of poor results because they listen to way too many instructors promoting the “do like the pros do” method. We are not pros, nor do we spend the time or have the ability to reach that level. It’s no wonder why so many professionals develope back, knee and arm issues as they try to launch that ball in the stratosphere. Drive for show and putt for 💵 as they say.

Another big aspect of this is what the shoulders and chest are doing. I have a tendency to start opening my upper body too early or too fast and that leaves the arms behind and it forces the club into a slightly altered plane resulting in poor contact. When I focus on keeping my chest facing away from the target a little longer, my distance and accuracy both improve.

I maintain my light grip on the club by using a caddie drag in the backswing. It works great!
@GeezerTony3 ай бұрын
Caddie drag? Can you explain?
@thomasesparza91753 ай бұрын
@@GeezerTony Ken Venturi called the drag takeaway the “paintbrush” move. It is a true one-piece takeaway. To drag your club effectively, you need to lag your clubhead. Move your left hand first so the clubhead trails the grip end. Done correctly, your clubhead will lag slightly behind the grip in the early part of the takeaway. That leaves you in position to drag the clubhead against the ground. You cannot drag anything unless your hands are ahead of the object. Or, just picture that you're mopping the floor of your room, or try to hear the clubhead dragging as you take it away from the ball. Besides creating a wide swing arc, the drag takeaway allows you to swing on plane. It also helps you enjoy more lag in the downswing. Importantly, it helps your big muscles work in sync. Dragging your clubhead slows your backswing, creating a smooth, balanced tempo. It also promotes full wrist hinge at the top of the backswing. Drag your club back correctly. And you will increase your distance and direction, plus consistency to the best of your abilities.
@thomasesparza91753 ай бұрын

Tony, after watching this video I have started trying to relax my hands and not to muscle the ball. When I time it out, the ball goes forever, when not, very left, or very right. I like your focus on the turn. When I watch you and Kirk take your practice swings it looks like you begin the backswing and downswing with body, arms and lastly with very relaxed hands. Looks like a momentum versus muscle swing.
@GeezerTonyАй бұрын
Yes, the speed is created by a reaction of the club (with relaxed arms and hands) to the rotation of the body ahead of the club. This is what is meant by the term "effortless power". Thanks for the comment!

I’ve found personally…at 71 old…to get relaxed hands it has to due to grip size If the grip is to small the swinger will grip to tight to hold onto the club and there goes the relaxation in the swing I found that the …JumboMax ( Company name) …relieves that tension …I don’t get paid for that There like holding a base ball bat for comparison Just enough tension to hold the bat but not enough to limit swinging to center field Another informative video 👍⛳️👍
@GeezerTony4 ай бұрын
A Lot of people like the Jumbomax.....I just recently move up to non Jumbomax midsize, mostly because I'm starting to get little twinges in my hand (sometimes) at impact. The larger grip has helped that...maybe due to being more relaxed, maybe due to the hand being in a slightly different position because of the larger size. Kirk Junge (Setup 4 Impact creator and CEO) uses jumbomax and hit a few balls held his clubs,...but I think I might have to work my way into those over time...as needed.

So hard for me to do but it definitely works. At 74, everyone I play with seems to be longer hitters than me. But when I relax and just swing through the ball and follow through the ball just flies so well. I play probably two clubs longer than any of the other players but I keep it in play don’t have that many trouble shots. End result is that I usually beat them in the game with my score. But sometimes it’s just hard to do. I get caught up in the moment watching them hit it hard fall into the trap of trying it myself, usually resulting in a longer hit but definitely off line. So try the relaxed swing, club up and just hit it. It’s so much more enjoyable and less frustrating. And your scores will just drop.

I’m nearly 80 years old, and I’ve played the game for 70 years. Three different times I’ve gone down the high hands, single plane rabbit hole with disastrous results. The Moe Norman/Todd Graves version is definitely not for me. Kirk Junge’s version was better, but I wasted an entire golf season on it and never did get it. I hate to get sucked in again, but I’m a body swinger, and I strongly believe in the tension-free arms and upper body that you talk about here. I watch you swing the club and I think okay, I can do that. So, I’m gonna take one more trip down that rabbit hole and see if I can make it work. Thanks for the vids Tony; you’ve inspired an old man to give it another shot. I’ll let you know how I do.
@GeezerTony4 ай бұрын
Larry, glad to hear you will try again! Please do let me know how it goes, Watch the grip video I just posted, it will help you position your arms more correctly by placing the grip in your hands a little differently. From there it's just lead arm and club aligned (from both directions) , move the club by turning the body and on the downswing, relaxed arms and turn the body AHEAD of the arms and club, not at the same time. Give the body a head start. I know you can do it!
@larrybeavens75804 ай бұрын
Well Tony, I gave it a good try for two rounds this weekend, and it’s just not going to work for me. I can’t make the body turn needed for the set-up-for-impact swing. Even in my younger days I couldn’t do it, and it’s even worse now that I’m older. I was a pretty good stick at one time; I played high school and college golf and lots of local tournaments. But, I’ve always been a sweeper of the ball and a short hitter. I never did have that swing where you could see both butt cheeks at impact. My hips just don’t rotate that much. I don’t know if you’re familiar with Larry Rinker; he’s an old pro out of Florida. His teachings are based on Wright Balance, the scientific theory of David Wright. That theory identifies 3 core regions - upper, mid and low core. I’ve never been measured, but I’m definitely an upper core player with minimal hip rotation. In watching you and Kirk, I would say you are both mid core players. Most pros are mid core, and a few (like Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson) are low core. If you’re not familiar with the concept, it’s an interesting study. Anyway Tony, thanks for sharing your swing methodology, and I’m still going to work on it. I can’t set up for your impact, but I can use the same concept and set up for mine with less forward shaft lean and the shaft pointing more to the center of me. Take care, and I wish you good luck with your channel.

@@larrybeavens7580 I do remember the Rinkers (Larry and Laurie) from their tour days! As for Setup 4 Impact, it's not really something one does/learns by going to the range and making full swings. It is a learning Program that we have the clients perform a series of learning drills very slowly and correctly until a habit is formed. They will proceed to a second drill which is longer but still very slow and includes the first drill, just a longer motion. Then a third. This continues until we reach a full swing motion, having had enough time and repetitions so that new habits are formed and these new movements find their way into our full swings without us having to think about them at all. Something like martial arts Tai Chi, slow repetitive movements creating a reaction rather than a though out action. Kirk Junge's online program is very reasonably priced at (I think) about $40/month to learn these drills and to be able to send videos of yourself to him performing them for his review and feedback. This how I learned it (10 years ago) and did 75% of my practice inside watching his demonstrated videos at the computer screen. It took me about 3 months (probably less than 1 hour a day) to feel I really had it, but I saw improvement right from the start. At least go to Setup4Impact.com and check it out, I believe you be glad you did! Either way, I wish you well and much fun on the course!

Hey Tony, I have a problem sometimes of swinging too hard from the top and have inconsistent swings. I grew up playing baseball and have a hard time being relaxed and swinging easier while turning my body. When I do swing correctly I really hit the ball much farther. Is this advice the same for short shots? Maybe you can do a video for short shots. I'm using your method for chipping and having much greater success around the greens.
@GeezerTony5 ай бұрын
Hi Steve, yes the relaxed feel should be for all shots, including chips. I assume by short shots you mean less than full wedges? Stay relaxed, turn the body as always, learn to control the distance of those shots by how much backswing you take. Never hurry the club down, let it swing as a result of your body rotating.

In the Setup 4 Impact swing which I guess is the 1 plane swing did you have to adjust the lie angle of your clubs? I would think you would have a flatter lie than normal.
@GeezerTony5 ай бұрын
Understand that the lie angle is (should be) measured at impact and not at setup. S4I has us set up on our impact plane, so if the lie angle was already correct for you then there is no need to change it. S4i is "a" one plane swing but there is no "the" one plane swing. Other instructors teach one plane swings that are not exactly like S4I, one being modeled after the swing of Mr Norman of Canada. Also, in most cases if the lie angle does need to be adjusted it would be to a more upright position rather then a flatter position.....such as Bryson DeChambeau has 6 degress upright from standard on his irons. FYI, mine are standard and I am 6'2". I hope this helps!

@GeezerTony5 ай бұрын
I try hard not to pull down, key thought is to start the downswing slowly. Holding the angle means you have to time the release which never works! It releases and also squares the clubface to the target as a reaction to being relaxed and turning the body ahead of the club. Setup 4 Impact, the swing I teach, is very simple , easy and quick to learn.

Hi Steve....almost everybody tends to flip their hands, some don't realize it, others know it but don't know how to stop. This is what we teach you to do with Setup 4 Impact, to make correct impact by moving the club with the body rather than the arms/hands. The arms/hands activate due to lack of body rotation (which does close the clubface as you indicate). Learn more at Setup 4 Impact.com, or look up Kirk Junge on youtube.

Take the rt arm out of it.he said something .don't pull.Dont pull or push.The grip is your key.Grip it with the last three fingers of the left hand.Thats your dominate pressure because thats wer the club is hinging.Grip if with same grip pressure from beginning to end.Thats very important.From there you need to feel the club swing as you rotate through the ball.centrifical force is how you get distance.the left arm and hand is the center of or piont at witch the shaft is hinging to creat this centrifical force.The thought is to have the left arm and shaft form a straight line at the moment of empact.Its timeing.If the shaft is lagging behind and not forming this straight line the ball will go the the rt and if the shaft is ahead it usually go's left.Relax the arms and and grip firm enuff the maintain control of the club.The key is the grip pressure must be constant.Your arms must be insink with your shoulders on the down swing.This is the easiest way to creat speed.This is the way John Dally does it.He doesn't do much at all with the rt hand.Some do use the rt hand but very late in the swing and some don't use it at all.There are some very long hitters that say they feel the left is controlling the club.
