In all fairness, life wasn't so easy a generation ago. People actuality had to leave the house to eat income. Unless they were ladies of the night or dealers. Everyone else had to put effort into earning income. Your parents couldn't foresee a dating app turning into the infomercial super platform.

Pro artist here and yes having several sources of income is key to survive financially. Just a note, "passive" income is rarely truly passive. You still need to make new content for that stream of income and it can take a lot of time to transform into something substantial. Also some streams of income won't work for you, so it's key to ditch them. (I couldn't make Patreon work personally for instance) Also super impressed with your organisational skills! Been working for 15 years now, but I'm nowhere as thorough! Got me weirdly motivated!

Yeah, especially on social media, it takes a lot of time for the people who are interested in your type of content to find your channel and then they have to like most of your content, so the algorithm starts to recommend your channel to more people. Then you have to gain fans with your content, so that they watch all of your videos and ALSO rewatch your past ones multiple times. It's a long and hard proccess till it becomes somewhat of a "passive" income :,)

Best of luck to you. I am 56 and just now taking my "hobby" serious enough to try to venture into making money. Like you I was told by a family member there was no future in doing art or writing poetry. Thankfully, I had a partner who signed me up for an Arts and Crafts fair (without my consent), and yeah the bug bite me (still has taken me a year to actually create a website, and promote myself on social media). I didn't bring in a lot of money, but it was enough to give me the confidence to actually pursue this thing called "creativity" as a possible income stream. You can do it, you can be successful at your dream, but you've got to put forth the effort and tune out the negative nelly's. Best of luck to you.

Ive been drawing as long as I can remember, when I was 17 and was considering my university choices, I asked my parents if I can do Art in uni, they said "how will you make money?" "you cannot make money in Art", "you only make money when you die". So, I listened to their concerns and skipped uni, went to work like "normal people" did. I'm 35 now, and "going to work like normal people" was a waste of time, but I learned hard lessons. One of them is, do NOT listen to old ideas about "how money is supposed to be made" Cos now artists make more money than doctors and lawyers and I wasted over 17 years of my life to appease others where If I used those 17 years to hone my craft I could of gotten an amazing career by now. If youre young, do NOT waste 17 of your life, if you KNOW you want to do ART then CHASE IT.

Its have been years that my ordinary job just pay a lot of my artist life and expensive supplies etc so I’m trying to make the best of both worlds as I don’t have money stability as an artist. But the thing is, DONNT DENY YOUR PASSION. GO FOR IT! My life without art would be a mess. Even if someday Ill do art just for myself, like I did when I was a kid, I can’t stop for the life of me. I do book cover design, and have recently begun cartooning / graphic novels. I also do portrait work. But I've gotten a LOT of push-back from my family. Dad would even yell "You'll be an artist over my dead body!" He grew up in a culture where all there was to life was either farming or working a dead-end factory job for 40 years and dropping dead after retiring. Well, he never got to retire. He died suddenly at age 55. I'm 62 now, and I COULD be in a better position had I gotten the encouragement I needed in my 20's. Even church people are some of the most anti-art a**holes around, which is sad in light of how the churches in Europe sought out and employed artists like Michaelangelo, DaVinci, etc. hundreds of years ago.

I’m not an artist but I’m a designer who buys artists work. What I can tell you from personal experience as a fellow creative… You make more money creating pieces for businesses than it is to individuals. Unless you’re extremely hard working, above average motivated, combined with personality, charisma, and raw talents. To emphasize, personality matters ALOT. How you carry yourself and others will increase the value of your artwork. Raw talents alone is NOT ENOUGH. I wish more artists could realize this as I can see the beauty in their work.
@ArcangelZero7

In a weird way this kinda gives me hope? Because I'm really not The Best Artist Ever(TM), but I'm doing the best I can with what I've got. I really don't think I possess any of that "raw talent" stuff. Used to hate the idea of streaming, social media, all that. But now, I'm hoping that if I can use my personality (of which there's only one, I think!), I can make some people happy, and make up for my lesser technical skill with maybe being inspirational, encouraging, and approachable. I mean hey, way I see it, I bet there's 1,000 better landscape oil painters than Bob Ross on a technical level...but he put himself out there and dang, he was nice to hang out with. He probably did alright, I hope. :) The irony is not lost on me that I'm writing this on KZbin, where, on paper, that's like, EVERYBODY's strategy in the art field LOL.

@@labaccident2010 why do you think its manipulations trying to get people to appreciate your hard work? you've put in the hours to create something beautiful and now you need to learn how to put it out there so that people can see what you see. you have something to offer. which in the end is a win-win situation. Manipulations is only when you got nothing to offer and you're trying to sell on an idea that doesn't even exist (aka MLM marketing). or maybe just hire a marketing expert to help. Either case, if you dont market yourself, you'll become another statistic: a poor artist.

Got talked out of everything I ever wanted to do. Got the job I I was told I should have and I should be happy to have. Spent 10 years, 12-hour shifts, on concrete floors. It destroyed my feet and I am no longer able to walk any distance. I am now out a job because I can't do anyting physical. So now I'm going to have to rely on my art, and I am about 20 years behind on the skill I feel I need an order to be successful at this. My advice, do it anyway. You're going to fail at least let it be at something you like. And don't break your body for a paycheck.

I'm not bad either, if I may say so but I'm terrified of doing that full time. But maybe I could do that half-time and half-time graphic design or even teach it. I was always doubting myself (but if I'm honest with myself, I can actually say I'm proud of what I create)/ I mistakenly think people are lying to me when they complement my paintings.. Now I'm consciously making the decision to pursue my life long dream of being a professional artist and pushing past my doubts, life's too short to let fear run the show! I want to make income with art as it just feels like it's what I'm meant to do, and your video really helped clarify somethings I was confused about. So thanks again! Wish you the best & God bless.

I work in an art related field as a graphic designer/ UI designer. I'm in my 30s now. Luckily my parents were supportive of my interest in art however I did hear and receive my fair share of questions and comments: But I have never met a successful artist/ But artist can't make money/ and even the artist and musicians are just taking the easy way out. This is a very cynical/ sheltered view of art. Usually I ignored these comments but if it was someone who actually mattered I would list career fields that art skills or at least a solid understanding of art is needed for. There are A LOT. If you have someone who really is hung up on not having income you can list average salaries. You can also point out to that not everyone has the same definition of success. Just because they can't succeed in something doesn't mean other people can't succeed either. It's also helpful to point out different ways art and design are positively benefiting them in every day life.

Soon after I created a drawing channel for kids, which has been slowly growing over the last three years (I believe this was a good investment, and I should have started a long time ago). And this year I FINALLY started this channel, and that is very slow so far. I continue to explore passive income options as it’s something that has been on my mind since I was 16. Yep. My journey in this has been really slow, and I got a little later into it, but it’s never too late to start. I really enjoyed your video, thanks for sharing with us! :)

Yes to all of this! 11 years in the corporate world and it is the worst. I have also been in school for 8 years ( I have to work full -time, so...) and I still didn't know what I wanted to do until last year and I lowkey might change my mind on that or add a little more to it. So I say, don't rush into college, if you don't want to. Or keep it "cheaper" and attend a community college. Or maybe look into places that might offer creative courses (not associated with a school, like a art museum).

I have to make active money to live and struggling. hopefully I can get into some markets in my new area this summer. trying to establish an art career on top of a day job and personal issues really is hard to balance and want to put the effort into art.

I really really relate to this! Building an art career on top of having a day job and a social life is a real challenge, mostly because it’s such a time management problem to do it all. I know you’re passionate about it so you’ll make it work. 💕

You could always do both. Don't give up on your art if it's something you really enjoy. You don't have to go into art as a career fresh out of Highschool but it's always good to have a plan B to fall back on. You can always master your art while you work on other degrees in school or work on a trade. You're young so take advantage of the time you have now to master your art if that's what you really enjoy. I wish you luck my friend. 😁

That's exactly what I heard growing up.. so I spent over 31 years working in the Aerospace industry... but now I'm retired and I feel like I still have a lot of time to make a good income as an artist. So we shall see. I JUST started loading videos.. poor videos, but it's a beginning. I have several projects in works and we shall see what this next year produces for me. I'm pretty excited about the future.. and I'm over 60! Ha! Great video... keep it up.. thanks.

I don't understand people now a days. There's art in literally everything even every job. Yet everyone bashes Artist's specifically. Toilet is Art, House's are art, Vehicles are art. Reason being it was man made. It breaks my heart that people bash on fine arts so profoundly. I feel like those people don't see art in anything. Currently I been wanting to go to school for a few things including art. If I had a choice if go for Fine Arts, music, dance , along with marine biology and criminal justice... However, the lack of support made it to where I just through out all the art completely. Art is my passion in all kinds of different ways, however just wish my friends and family could see that.

I've been doing commission work for almost 2 years now, and i hated it XD. Tho I'm happy that I do get to earn, but having not much time to do personal art or take care of myself saddens me too. As well as not all the time people are going to commission you. I've been thinking of finding more ways to be able to earn passive incomes and I still suck at managing my social accnts haha. WoW, just wow!!!! Young lady, I think you may be on your way to growing a successful career be it in painting, or some other creative outlet, and maybe even as a motivational person. From the sounds of it, you have done a lot of research. I mean, how many 16-21 years old's know and understand the difference between passive and active incomes. Being as you are so young (please don't take that as a slight against you, I wish I had known someone like you when I was young---but then we didn't have the internet when I was your age-- or at least it was not common place) you have a target audience that is ripe. I think youths are very interested in planning their lives, so to speak and that could be a career path to marry with your artistic talent. You are at an age where your personal motivation and motivation of others is so valuable. The example you gave at the beginning of your video is the very reason I did not pursue art, or writing ( I use to write a lot of poetry) but yeah, I had that family member who said the exact same things you mentioned so I put doing art, or even learning art or pursuing writing (mainly publishing) my poetry (which I had fallen out of love with, but hope to marry (that "talent") to my burgeoning painting interest). Anyway, just wanted to give you Two Thumbs up, as Siscle and Ebert would say. It really takes a lot for someone to impress and just blow me away, and you have done that! I wish you lots of luck, adventures, and success in your life.

I think the thing to remember when folks tell kids 'you can't make money as an artist' - remind them they need to do without tv, movies, beautifully designed packaging, nice clothes, music etc... pretty tiny list but art is EVERYWHERE and people are being paid to make it. I think often people think of an artist as someone who just paints pictures, but they can be illustrators (me), graphic designers, calligraphers, product designers etc etc too. I'm 46 this year and didn't start making a living out of my art till I was 40, so it's possible at any time, so anyone reading this, don't think you've missed the boat if you're older, it's never too late to follow your passion! And yeah, never put all your eggs in one basket! I make my living through my membership, my shop (prints, originals and books) and kickstarter (to fund my books). It's working well!

Well said! I wanted to play the flute and bake food. I ended being a teacher like my dad, and his mom, and her mom…Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but I ended up leaving the profession and going back to it a couple of times. In my 50s I said FU to the establishment and started getting creative again. I cooked, baked, was a personal trainer, no music, but I’m much happier! Note to my 18 year old self: travel and love your life!

I was 20-ish. My moms first respond was something like this: " How much money art can make? " , it was like. This is trash dream, go get a job like normal person. That moment I actually it was hobby phase and I loved making art just for myself. Career dream came after, but then I already struggled with bad things in my life and my art dream felt dead. I even wanted to start streaming, even tho I am introvert. Now I am almost 30. Art career dream has evolved to something else. I can still see it as art. I want to make a videogame or two. When I was young, I was dreaming to be concept artist and help making games, but now I want to do it myself. :D This project is still in babyshoes. :) Thank you, Kelsey! Your video was suggested one from YT and I am very thankful I clicked on it! :) I wish to all the artists good and positivity! Even if the dream feels dead, add some flame to it. Sometimes things must burn to ash to get to be reborn again, like phoenix.

This gives me sm hope to continue doing art. I'm 17 atm and still deciding what course to opt for in uni and I am really considering taking art but at the same time people around me constantly keep telling me that "You won't be able to earn enough being an artist" "You'll have to do a lot of struggle" "Don't waste your parents money like that". Tho my parents are pretty okay with me choosing art. I'd be lying if I say these stuff that people say don't affect my decision. I'm considering to do something in biology and doing art alongside until I start earning enough for it. My life goal is to set my art carrier and have my own art studio. And I hope everyone like me get's to do what they want in future. Just don't let people affect you to the point where you leave your whole passion behind.
