A few notes about what happened at Stanford-le-Hope for context... When I first got off the train there, I spotted someone trying to subtly take a photo of me from the other platform, beyond all reasonable doubt they were taking a photo of me, and not something else, and they very much did not come across as someone who traditionally watches my videos. I initially shrugged this off though, I'm different, having unusual reactions from people happens all of the time, I'm used to it. I got on with filming the end of the previous video. Then, throughout my half hour there, I spot this same person, now with someone else, walking past the station several times, very clearly looking at me. I was starting to feel a bit uneasy, but I made a point of hanging around the little area with the ticket gates where there were two members of staff... just in case. I only go back to the platform a couple of minutes before my train to Benfleet was due, and these same two people appear on the platform. They split up and get on the train on different sets of doors either side of me... bear in mind until that point they'd been together. Feeling freaked out at that point, I wait until the doors start closing and jumped off the train, leaving them on it. My brain was at that point in overdrive, going back to what felt like the safe area of the ticket gates I took a while to compose myself and work out what to do next. I wanted to give up and go back to the hotel... but inside me I really didn't want to let fear win... even though it felt like the actions of those two men didn't make any rational sense, it may well have all just been one big coincidence, and even if it wasn't a coincidence, why the hell should I stop my life? To remove any predictability from my travelling pattern (just in case), I got in an Uber to Pitsea and continued from there. The Uber driver did a fantastic job of calming me down, by the time we had got to Pitsea we had managed to try to rationalise everything that had happened, I think it was as a direct result of him that I felt able to even consider carrying on filming this series that evening. Often I look back at incidents with hindsight and think that I'm reading into something too much, but on this occasion there was definitely something not right. With hindsight this time I think that despite nothing happening after that, I think I took too much of a risk staying out and I should have gone back to the hotel. Even if this was nothing, the fear that I felt in that situation is still a valid emotion, and only shows just how much fear that I'm sure anybody who is different felt during that period in August when the far right riots were going on. I am in no way making those riots about trans people, the direct targets of those riots will have felt fear well beyond I could even imagine. Even though we were not the direct targets of those riots - those who were taking part have very much made their feelings clear about anybody different, and any of those thugs could have been on any street in the country, and in that period, they felt empowered to act on their feelings. We are all human, we are all in this together, we should be better than this in 2024
@RainhamRailEnthusiastАй бұрын
This shouldn't happen at all, just glad you were at a station with staff. Full marks to the Uber driver for calming you down. No one should ever feel uneasy anywhere, let alone a railway station. Keep your head high, together we all can destroy the hate.

As an older gay man with mobility issues, I think I'd have reacted to the incident at Stanford-le-Hope in much the same way as you did, Jen. It's the old fight or flight thing - and much as we might all want to fight; sometimes taking flight is the right thing to do, in order to preserve our personal comfort and safety. You reached that conclusion all by yourself and, in my view, that makes you the bigger, and stronger person - even if it doesn't feel that way at the time... I'd actually all but forgotten about the summer riots - most likely because, we didn't really have any riots in Scotland - and we certainly didn't have any summer! For once, it was quite difficult to tell what they were all about, but you're quite right in your assertion that it really doesn't do to be a member of a different community that can be instantly recognised, in those circumstances. And of course, the reality is that the rioters are little more than a bunch of individuals who are too scared to express their individualities among the others. Hence, in reality, you had the upper hand from the outset. That corner of Essex isn't my favourite part of the world either - the only and only time I visited Basildon was to give evidence in the trial of my historic abuser, so as you might imagine it doesn't exactly have good associations for me. It fascinates me how it and other Southern English new towns look so dated in their central areas compared with the first tranche of Scottish ones, which opted for privately-owned indoor malls instead - of which most are now seriously under-occupied, owing to their high rents and lack of expansion opportunities. The local police call it Bas-Vegas, by the way!

Sorry to hear of your experience at Stanford-le-Hope, Jen. Several years ago I arranged a training course for Train Captains (Guards) on the 12-coach trains between Shoeburyness and Fenchurch Street. One job I did was to photograph every C2C station and junction, often from the rear cab. I never saw any such behaviour at that time but was aware of people on other lines who acted in antisocial ways. Do let staff know if ever you feel unsafe.

When I used to commute into London on thr c2c pre pandemic, the express trains between Leigh and West Ham in the early peak would go non stop, and overtake a train at Laindon which would use the central platform as a passing loop. Just checked the timetable and those overtaking trains still happen from 7 am. And some trains start in Laindon happen, so suspect from the central platform too.

After this series I hope you experiment with different video formats? I know we have Geoff and Jago but.. but..... Why not talk about new stations such as Beam park or the potential Renwick Road. There are talks about the overground taking over the the Purfleet branch.. and running all the way to Tilbury for the Thames Clipper's new service. There are also talks of making a flypass at Romford to allow through trains without crossing GA fast lines (for freight alternatives) and creating some through services to somewhere (Fenchurch Street or Liverpool Street via Stratford) or even up along other overground routes. That provides more TPH capacity down to any extension to Abbey Wood in the central tunnels. The talk of creating such a flyover/under at Upminster was interesting but something about new works at the District Line depo made it unviable. Also most of the capacity issues are: using 4 car trains to make them last longer until they are replaced, skipping stops (Upminster and/or Barking for people using it as an express- often moaned about in Essex newspapers), and timetabling restrictions across the lines due to branching and the Ockendon branch being single track. Honestly you are right to have taken a taxi in that part. Essex people have a bad reputation as we know for various things and negative stereotypes, which is unfair. As a minority male of my portfolio of characteristics, I find people of Essex generally not too clued up on the issues some groups face but substantially wonderful people - more so than other reasons. However the very small minority who aren't are very dangerous. I would never go to that town you went to and my Trans friend had an issue there that was serious and not my place to discuss as they are not ready to talk about that trauma. Also you will find Essex police are extremely transphobic, homophobic and racist (but not a "general" racist, it's hard to explain). There is one female Judge in Basildon Combined Court who just absolutely hates LGBT. Sorry the world is like this.
