Still waiting for atheists to do something like the Fuggerei. I'll be waiting all my life, because it will never happen. You can "nope thanks" all you want sitting up on your pseudo-moral high ground, but what the Fuggerei has done for hundreds of thousands of people since it was established is something you should look at with respect and admiration, regardless of religious or non-religious conviction.

It’s not a cult. Like you said, it’s the oldest social housing community. And it was more a matter of redaming his soul from the Fegefeuer . That was back when people believed that you could either buy yourself out of or being brought out of the Fegefeuer (when someone prays for you). So he created these rule to the residents of the Fuggerei, though that people pray for him everyday. Also Fugger wasn’t as bad as described, with for example inventing the „Verlagssystem“ (today it’s a term mostly used by bookprinters, but back then it meant that individuals could do their work at home giving the results to fugger wich enabled woman for example to earn a decent living) or the „Doppelte Buchführung“ wich is the currently required way of accounting in Germany and the most used method in the world.

I've been there 3 years ago with my old class and the people that showed us around were really nice. This place definitely is not a cult, they just keep the tradition connected to this place. I dont think it is so strictly as shown in this video. It's a good thing this place still exists, because Augsburg is the 3rd largest city in the state of Bavaria, meaning there definitely are people that are poor and would be thankful to live there.

My grandmother lived there her last 12 years. Even two school classes of mine were visiting her home, to get an example of an upper floor flat. Although she was Catholic, I considered her to be just as religious as the more or less average person with a liberal connection to her own belief. Sometimes she visited the church, but it wasn't forced at all. Probably 13 years ago, the gates weren't closed and visiting was for free - In later years I had some issues, considering the fact, that most of the old people couldn't use the shortcuts any longer, at least I didn't have to pay, when I wanted to see her. Her flat was spacious (speaking only from my POV, because I can't find anything calmingly beautiful in overall too big and often too empty rooms). - The attic was very big, it had the same outline as the flat, but unused though. In recent times I'm somewhat puzzled about the conditions if you want to live there now, but I won't comment it. The only thing I know, no matter that I was born in Augsburg, Catholic and always lived there, it's unlikely, that I might live there. Even the place I grew up from the age of 1 to 11, a quite common example of gentrification. It's impossible to go back, you simply cannot afford the increasing rents ... It's quite a love-hate relationship with my so called hometown, which, in some regards, is getting more and more snobby. Maybe the main reason, why I'm quite thankful for the Fuggerei, because it's one of those rare, beautiful places beyond the cold blocks of our beloved architectual modernity (irony!), where these people is given the chance to live in a harmonic atmosphere. PS: A village near Munich!? Uffff ;) A village, about a millenium older than Munich to say the least.

I am Catholic, I can replay to your question. Pray for the family is very different from worshiping the family. Praying for someone or family is thanking God for such family, benefits and blessings, At same time people ask god to continue to bless, protect, strength and keep them safe. For the departed ones, people ask God to receive them in his eternal kingdom, give them peace, light and ever lasting happiness. We only worship God, people are respected and celebrated as instruments of God blessings. Glory is given to God alone, that inspire people to do good for the little ones, and the payer of the humble person is assured to reach heaven.

I wouldn't live there, since I dont live in augsburg and my job dosn't allow me to be home by 10. But other people might get the best thing out of this. Also, you have to follow rules everywhere, dont be so pretentious. I rented an apartment, which I am not allowed to trash. God damn, this is unfair. But fish isn't available there, I mean very expensive due to imported. 10Rs for rent on temple and 3 times vegan meals from temple. Electricity, 4G connections also available there (but definitely not free) I don't know about safety about women but you spend entire week with family there. @spaghettigum
@spaghettigum 4 жыл бұрын
ok so a cult is a orginization based on religous beliefs that promises worshippers a better place or life. Ok so what are the requirements? You have to be a catholic, you have to go to church every sunday, you have to pray 3 times a week. What do you get, housing, and a community same as all the other cults. By definition it is a cult.

It was the part with the blender when he said something to the effect of "shit gets messy". As for the dress change, I kind of like it. More of himself coming through in the videos. The suit is great, but having a casual personality come through, too, is great.

If I lived in Augsburg, I would absolutely move to fuggeri, if they had an apartment that could house me (one that's accessible, but the images seem fairly accessible) I was raised catholic, I'm not practising, but I absolutely could be. It depends on a couple of things, but as described here I'd totally live in it. I couldn't go to the church 3 times a day because of physical limitations, and I wouldn't be able to go to local church at times I would be hospitalized. But if they accommodated me praying from my bed when I was bed bound or hospitalized I absolutely would.

After watching your video i read a few german articles about those flats. You've made a few mistakes^^ For example, if you've locked yourself out you only have to pay 10cents. The rules were set up around 1500 and haven't changed since and that's why they're so strange. Nobody's controlling anymore if you pray three times a day or not ^^ In the middleage people were very religious and also believed that you can buy yourself free from your sins ("Ablasshandlung") and Jakob Fugger was afraid of going to hell, to solve this problem he built this housingcomplex and told all citizens to pray for him and his family. -> That's how a businessman solves his problems :D You can be in dept, that's ok, but you have to be in dept because of unfortunate circumstances and not because you have a gambling addiction or something like that. The family doesn't want to increase the rent today because they earn much more with this gated community as a tourist attraction. Aaand you'd have to pay 88c plus gas and electricity, so you still have to pay those bills though... xD

I think you're missing a significant facet of Medieval charity and religiosity. Monasteries and charitable foundation were frequently founded to elicit the prayers of the beneficiaries. Likewise, many people would bequeath a certain sum of money for the poor in the hope of speeding their way through Purgatory. Even today, many Catholics will enroll they're deceased loved ones in religious societies for this reason. A business man such Jakob Fugger had good reason to believe that his stay in Purgatory might prove long, so it makes sense to require the tenants of Fuggerei to pray both for him and his family. These prayers do not consist of false worship either, at least, not from the Catholic perspective. They are the Lord's Prayer (Our Father). Hail Mary, and the Nicene Creed.

Sorry but I currently live in Augsburg (you pronounced it wrong by the way) and your video has been disappointingly and badly researched. it is not Fuggerei it is THE fuggerei as it is not its own village but rather just an area of the city. Also i have visited the Fuggerei many times and one does not get the feeling that they are worshipping a deity. There is literally just one statue of him. Also there is only a museum there dedicated to the Fuggerei itself and not to the family, a museum owing to the fact that the Fuggeri is Augsburgs biggest tourist attraction. your other videos are allright so i would like to see you correct this.

It's weird because I watched this video the month it came out. Now I live in Augsburg nearly two years on, I moved in a month ago, and I SWEAR I knew this village from somewhere. Gotta love Augsburg!

If they are Catholics, as you say, then clearly they do NOT worship him despite what you say. They may well be grateful and hold his memory in reverence, but worship? I don't think so.

The Fuggers are an extremely interesting family. Jakob Fugger, also known as Jakob der reiche - Jakob the rich, was probably the richest human being that ever existed and will ever exist. He gave credits to almost all important kings and the Vatican - so he was more or less in charge of the international politics and chose indirectly who became pope. He was the richest but also the first to create social housing in that form. It would be very nice, if the 1% right now would give anything back to the masses... Edit.: It's definitely not a cult. Please inform yourself about this amazing part of history.

Well, I admire the the charitable nature of it even though I'm not religious. Certainly many people could follow from this example. . . In my hometown there's an senior living centre that closed down because the property was sold so the building could be demolished and turned into a condominium high-rise. But due to some legal red-tape (I think it was an issue of the planned building not adhering to certain local height restrictions) the condo never got built, and the old age home has been sitting empty for years. . . All I can think is, "if the owner's actually gave a damn, they could house a lot of people here for cheap, rather than let the building rot." Sadly, that's just not the way a lot of these big business types think.
