I would probably ask how do swiss companies get out with the ridiculous ammounts they charge for their pieces. For example a rolex explorer compared with the day date 40 in platinum, the difference is way above the cost of the precious metal. And if we compare de explorer with the sarb then again rolex is way too much. Even the best rolex asian replicas are so high quality they make you wonder if we shouldn’t find a price in between ...
@timgleason7427 жыл бұрын
I may have some insight as to your first "hate," that is, why do the Japanese reserve the best quality for the JDM? I just found this review and maybe it's too late to comment, but for what it's worth, here are my thoughts. I have been in Japan now for 12 years and my wife is Japanese, so I think that I have a good understanding of the pulse of Japanese culture. In the west, and more specifically the USA, our primary motivation to buy a product is often based on value; that is, what's the best we can get for the smallest price. The Japanese are different, however. The Japanese primary motivation to buy is more often based on quality, rather than value. The Japanese will pay more money for a given product if the perceived quality is high. (Almost) everything is more expensive in Japan, but also (almost) everything is of higher quality. Shoes, clothing, electronics, customer service, food, even my house! The Japanese are aware that Westerners, Americans in particular, are often more focused on value rather than quality. So with fixed production schedules and finite assembly facilities, I believe that they allocate their higher quality products for those markets that demand higher quality, and allocate their "other" products to markets that demand higher value. Of course, this is all generally speaking, and maybe I'm wrong, but in Japan, high quality is demanded throughout all aspects of the culture. Therefore, it stands to reason that the idea would apply to the Seiko SARB series, of which I am a new proud owner of the 017. Thank you for the excellent channel!

"...slow release charm...", what a great turn of a phrase which coincides exactly with my own experience. Before acquiring a SARB033 late last year, I reached out to another collector whom I respect highly to get his opinion. His reponse was an immediate and emphatic "buy", but cautioned me that it was a watch that would not overwhelm at first and would take awhile to fully appreciate. He then went thru many of the same points you covered, the dial, handset, understated yet effective lume, movement and the coup de grace, the equisite case design (the finishing, contours, details). His take was that the SARB was Seiko's response and challenge to the Swiss watchmakers. He was right on all points. I agree with another of your observations, the SARB is such a compelling value, it now skews the baseline when I look at other watches. As always, you can buy better watches but be prepared to spend a lot more. And then ulimately you have to ask yourself the question, what else am I seeking that the SARB doesn't already provide? The SARB033 falls into that select group of watches that I cannot ever see a reason to sell. Just like the venerable SKX007/009, every watch afficiando should have one in their collection. To wrap this up, I would like to offer a different type of analogy using jazz music (yes, jazz!). If you are familiar with the genre, then you should know that Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" is considered by many as the greatest jazz album ever released. It is a work that other jazz giants are frequently measured against, meaning, did they have a "Kind of Blue", few ever did. The ones that come to mind, Coltrane's "A Love Supreme", Stan Getz's "Getz/Gilberto", Brubeck's "Time Out". The SARB033 is Seiko's "Kind of Blue"...it is that good.

Though I totally understand if Seiko seems stingy with their domestic models is somehow interpreted as being snobbish, I do feel there is a deeper reason. As I understand it, Seiko prides themselves as a watch company that, not only makes excellent watches, but has superb after service. Here in Japan, especially with their Grand Seiko line, I know that they even continue to save old parts for to service past models they no longer make, just for the customers who still possibly own old Grand Seiko models. Now, this way of thinking is not necessarily for all models, but I tend to think that this idea is one reason why Seiko wouldn't put as much effort abroad spreading their market. Because, they would be unable to take responsibility and service their products as well, unless there is a trained Seiko watch maker in every country, which is more expense for Seiko. I also feel that, sadly there is bias for "brand names", understandably. Europeans have a long and rich history making amazing watches. Unless there is enough "demand" for Seiko watches beyond international costs, to put a lot of energy into their foreign sales would probably be a great risk. Just my thoughts.
@dpearson808086 жыл бұрын
Stoney Lonsome I disagree. While yes the JDM models sell quickly-in the smaller quantities that are available in N.America, I don’t believe their sales would even touch the number that they do domestically in Japan. Here, Japanese brands like Seiko, Citizen, Orient (whom is a brand basically unknown in North America outside watch enthusiasts) are viewed as “cheap” brands. I do not personally hold that opinion at all, as I am an informed watch-and Seiko- enthusiast. But here the luxury/higher end offerings of Seiko are relatively unknown because it is a hard sell sometimes to convince a buyer or a retailer that it is “worth it” to pay the same price as they would for an entry-level Swiss brand (Tissot, Hamilton) to get a piece with the same name as a ~$100 Seiko 5.The popularity of Seiko 5 in N. America, while putting Seiko on the map, has also served to devalue their higher end offerings because of the association people have with their affordable price tag. They love them for the range of models and styles, and the fact that they are automatic, and their low cost. And unless they really look at and appreciate the quality of one of Seiko’s nicer pieces, they will completely overlook the brand as a whole, aside from the affordable range. They’ve basically been put in a box, and that box is not an expensive, high quality box. And this is true EVEN of Grand Seiko, a brand that is unequivocally luxury. Nobody who knows anything about GS would argue that their pieces aren’t worth what they charge for them, based on the workmanship and attention to detail. But yet they still get overlooked as a luxury brand in N.Am, because it’s “just a Seiko.” Case in point, I was chatting with a pharmacist, and I noticed his watch, a quartz chronograph on a oyster style bracelet, but a conservative size, not too large which I like. I thought it might be a Seiko and from what I could see of the dial the name on it seemed of similar length. I asked him “is that a Seiko” and he said “a what?” I said “your watch, is it a Seiko?” to which he replied “oh, nonononono, it is Guess.” So yeah... A fashion brand watch like Guess is more desirable to an average consumer in N. America than a similarly-priced Seiko that is objectively better quality. A Seiko and a Guess both the same price which would you buy? But Seiko has to deal with the entire population, who is not as into watches as we are. But for right now, I say let them be ignorant of the great value and quality of Seiko! It just means more for us, and the less people know about gems like the SARBs, the lower the prices will be. And so be it if you have to go a bit out of your way to get a JDM model, or buy it used now on the case of the SARB. If it’s worth having it’s worth working for!

I love my SARB035. Pictures don't do the dial justice because it has a kind of pearlescent texture that is hard to pick up in photos. It's easily worth the money and any faults can be excused given the price. However, there are a few nitpicks. 1. I've found the movement not that accurate. With a cheap watch there is probably a lot of variance. 2. The crystal could do with AR coating 3. The crystal is also a magnet for fingerprints That's about it though.

Love: 1) Value for money 2) Styling - "slow release charm about it" 3) Solid performer - 6R15 movement, hacking movement, water resistance, bi-directional winding, etc. etc. +7 second performance on his sample. 4) Quality of the piece - finishings, solid end links, etc. 5) Strap monster - versatile with any strap Hate: 1) JDM's are significantly better than the international releases. 2) Makes you feel guilty about spending more money on other watches. 3) Would prefer higher VPH 4) Decoration on the movement 5) Drilled lug holes Since #2 hate is more of a positive (equivalent to responding to "what is your greatest weakness" in a job interview with "I work too hard!"), I'd replace that with requesting a more accurate movement. Its not bad, but it definitely could be better.

Another great video, I honestly think they dont bring the best models to the international market at a lower price because they simply dont have to. They most likely make a tremendous amount of profit on their international models they already release while having lower cost than the jdm models and they are most likely doing fine in sales, they simply sell lower quality with good margines on the international market just in a way similar to how DW sells crap with good margins. Seiko being a Japanese business is possibly under more scrutiny in the domestic market or you could perhaps give nationalism or pride, longing to be a high end brand in your own domestic market where it all began, as the cause of higher quality with their jdm models.

Very logical and rather disheartening but that is the world today I guess. Thank you for sharing that, makes sense. Best regards, TGV

The Urban Gentry well honestly its a two way street in my opinion Both the consumer and the company are at "fault". people are simply accepting this type of quality at this price point, Seiko isnt a charity and neither is any other company and neither should they be. in order for this to be different the landscape should change with which i mean the consumerbase. Seiko Will simply follow the market/demand of the consumer. And therefore the consumers are to create demand otherwise IT would Just be Bad for Seiko to increase costs and quality "if no one cares/There is no market for it". so imo we cant blame Seiko which does even offer higherquality if the demand is met. we should blame the western consumer market which does not drive companies to increase quality anymore Just my 2 cents. kind regards

TheAestheticGod Here in Germany, Seiko has a boutique in Frankfurt (where Sinn comes from), and they officially sell some JDM pieces "exclusively" there. SARB033 "only" costing 550€ (~600$)there :'D cheers ^^

I purchased this watch when you first reviewed it. Everything you say is true about this marvelous piece. I then sold it! Why?. I have just purchased the white dial version and will not sell again. I the intervening period I have purchased goodness knows how many watched, culminating in my grail 14060 pre-ceramic no date and a recent Omega Seamaster Pro 300. I have to say this watch would not really be overpriced at close to a $1000 in my humble opinion. with regard to accuracy, I do remember that mine was accurate =4 seconds every 24 hours. Not bad at eh? Finally, your so right, I am also diseased with watch obsession, ever since my father got me my first Citizen automatic when I was 8 living in Cyprus in the 70's. The magic grabbed me and has never let go. My father later had a Rolex. He saved for it for so many years. I guess it was his dream, along with Porches's. (he never owned one of those), I never found out what happened to his watch, but I was determined to own the same watch in his memory and last year I got a pristine 1998 14060 no date sub. For me, the magic of a watch is tangled up with childhood memories and a wonderful obsession that keeps me sane and eternally interested in a technology that actually works without recourse to a chip or a battery. If you get a chance watch George Daniels on his Coaxial invention on youtube. That is my obsession in a nutshell. Love the show. Best Regards Chris UK

I bought my sarb033 4 months ago and the compliments I get on it are always about how it must have cost so much more then what I paid for it. I love looking down at my wrist every time I wear this. I wasn't big on the bracelet it came on, so I switch it to a leather strap. Makes it look much better.

It was your review of the SARB033 that convinced me to get one. The price point of this watch is spectacular for what you get. I have one minor complaint and that would be that the bezel seems to be a scratch magnet. Great work as always!
@ÕnûthTHUR-URSTROMTAL7 жыл бұрын
Completely agree with you on all the points, especially on that one questioning about why paying more for an automatic watch. I owned in the past a lot of very expensive watches (prices sometimes unjustified compared to what you get inside the case) and at some point just decided to sold them all one by one, after getting my first Seiko watch. Great value and quality for the money, really robust and reliable movements, very nice case finishing and lume is simply the BEST on the market. I'm still wondering even now, why I was paying more for those watches, when Seiko is simply the best brand on the market, offering everything for a very good and affordable price...!
@mikec34544 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right about #2 on "hates" ... My rule is 2-3 "luxury" watches, i.e. my Rolex, Tudor, and Longines, then the rest of the collection consists of affordable, fun pieces. This is where my Seikos fit in, in addition to recently discovering Dan Henry too. It really does make me wonder if I ever want to spend $5-10K on a watch or buy/trade all of these lesser expensive watches to try them out.

In that initial review you mention, you come across pleasantly surprised by what you saw. It's great to see how the watch has clearly grown on you. In writing my own three-year review I thought about the styling in terms of that market, where I lived for five years. I've come to think of Seiko positioning this as an aspirant's Grand Seiko, geared to the middle-manager salaryman who wants a piece of quiet elegance but isn't trying to outshine the bosses.

i own this watch for 1 year, it's true, it grows on you. I was so disappointed when i first got it. but i love it now. 2 things that I hate about this watch would be: the size (would have been perfect if its 40mm case diameter), and the metal bracelet feels a little bit cheap, but it doesn't bother me that much.

Great and entertaining video as always TGV, love your channel!. I got this lovely timepiece thanks to your review several months ago, and I am totally in love with it. And I have to say, I've lost count of the compliments I get from people in my office, many of them from executives with 6000 pounds rolexes on their wrists. They love it! Can't believe its price! Seiko SARG009 owner here. Amazing watch. Would have happily paid an extra 100-200$ for anti-reflective coating and screw down crown for better water resistance. Only two negatives I have with it. Same would apply to the SARB033/035

"Be ever faithful." A true motto for a Rolex lover or a mechanical movement lover. I have moved away from Rolex, Omega, Petek etc. I love Panerai and Seiko now. Its not the money nor rare materials. It is the design of a Grand Seiko dial, or a tool watch from Seiko or Panerai that says to me; this is what watches were made and designed to be. Enjoy and not care about a scratch or resale. USE ME and LOVE ME.

I agree with your points on the positives and negatives. I say the same about my Tissot Visodate, and your second negative point is right on, other than the fact that my Tissot is +10s/day, it's a mild annoyance. Higher vibrations are always welcome (28+).
