You CAN’T buy one! Toyota Camry Hybrid 2024 review

The Toyota Camry is so popular they've stopped taking orders.
I never thought I'd see the day, but that's the case in Australia, where the current-generation Camry Hybrid has been such a massive success that the order books are closed, and paused indefinitely.
There'll be a new-generation Camry in 2025, by all accounts, but this review focuses on why this car is such a success, and what makes it so good.
But I've also got a few alternative options that might be better for you, so check out the review and leave a comment below with your thoughts.

Currently own 09 Hybrid camry with 190k on it still has original brake pads and HV battery. The original 12v battery lasted 10 years. She is still going strong in the hands of my bestmans daughter. My wife now drives a 2021 update sx as discussed here and real-world fuel economy as good as 4.4 but mostly 4.7 4.8. I drive Corolla's and Ravs in Hybrid all the time, and SX camry is still my favourite. But GXL rav is also in my sights. Rav4 cruisers are nice, but they have loads of tech i just dont use. Great review as always Matt. At 62 I'm changing in my thinking re Hybrids. I wouldn't have considered one a few years ago but I think they are certainly a better alternative than ev's and Toyota has such long history with them. I remember how the first Prius got so rubbished, but Toyota persisted and improved their Hybrids. The Camry is quite a good looking car now, can't believe I'm saying that!

For a lot of people mate, hybrids are a really great solution. They really do use a lot less fuel, and not in an obtrusive way.

@@mnj640 can you elaborate on cheaper to charge? No one has ever shown me a cost chart where EV I'd more than a hybrid to fuel. I just have a petrol car for what it's worth

​@@PH-kl5qqwell EVs you need public chargers on long trips. They can be more expensive than gasoline. Recent comparison across UK was double price to drive with EV than regular diesel.

Excellent review. I have a fond spot for Camry’s, having driven them in a past Government role. The earlier version of the hybrid was excellent, the newer version likely much the same. A comfortable car, once known as ‘white goods on wheels’ has always been an excellent car to buy and definitely not white goods. Hybrid fuel economy is excellent for the size of the car, and better than many other hybrids can achieve. Internal technology does look a bit archaic, and if I were in the market I would want the high grade one, not sure I’d pay extra for the Lexus though. Nowadays I’m in an EV, but I retain respect for Camry’s as good cars. Thanks for the review.

I’ve had my ascent sport for 6 months now I love it. It’s just a good simple everyday car that feels nice to drive and is incredibly cheap on fuel. I drove it from Melbourne to Brisbane recently and proved itself perfect for road trips. My only complaint is that on the lower spec models the stereo isn’t great.

After driving another brand hybrid, it seems that in 23/2024 they are a real jump forward in terms of power and fuel efficiency - word has it these Toyota's are one of the best The fuel usage figure s are significantly better than what was available 5 years ago - well done Toyota

the problem is you cant get them without paying few more thousands based on their "drive away price" . And the closing of the order really makes it hard to buy a new one .

I would choose drumroll Honda Civic lift back, Coz I own one. haha. the lift back with extra bootspace really saved me many Bunnings and Costco runs, abolsutely fab. Camry was one of my consideration , but ended up with Honda , but of course the Camry has soft drive.

Thanks Geoffrey. The Camry hybrid wouldn’t be the ideal choice for towing - mainly as its hitch point will be very low, and the car is super low when loaded, too.

I bought a hybrid Corolla sedan and I fit better in it compared to my wife’s Camry. The drivers seat goes lower giving more head room 👍🏼

I'd rather buy a Hybrid Corolla hatch. But I love the heated and cooling seats of this model. Not a Camry fan at all. I love the Lexus range though.

What would this Camry be like to tow the occasional 8x4 trailer load to the tip or from the Landscape supply yard?

I've never towed with a Camry, and it wouldn't be my first choice - the maximum towing capacity is 400kg, so if you're loading up a trailer that size, I think you'll be pushing the limits.

I bought a Toyota Camry Hybrid Ascent Sedan in Melbourne Australia in February 2024 and I was charged $43,000/ drive away price. It was made in Japan in December 2023 but arrived in Australia in February 2024 with 2024 compliance plates. The colour is red and it has no gps and 17 inch wheels. I now feel I paid a bit too much. Let me know the actual drive away price of my car. I was told that Bookings Toyota Camrys are not accepted in 2024 now. Please explain !

Hi mate, That price is about right for a brand new Ascent hybrid. The prices in my reviews are the “list” or “MSRP”, so before on-road costs…. Not drive-away. Yeah, the bookings for the 2024 Camry will be finished now as there’s an all-new Camry due late this year.

I doubt it Matt. That is for Lexus only.in terms of sedan. Camry is either 2.5L Hybrid i4 NA petrol or 2.5L NA petrol.

@therightcar I still drive an old Aurion ,in terms reliability smoothness power and refinement and having reasonable fuel economy the toyota 2GRFE v6 is a gem .With the 4 cylinder the camry of a similar model year was no were near the same car to drive.

I've had poor luck with 3 Hyundai cars. 1. Avante = Elantra in North America 2. Sonata = Sonata in North America 3. i30 = markets as Elantra in the US and Canada The worst was the Sonata.... Loud engine noises starting at 80,000 kms and then dead engine by 100,000 kms. All cars had lack luster real world fuel economy and lots, lots and lots of squeaks and rattles... I should also add - electrical problems with tail lights was also common. I will never buy another Hyundai... I do hope current and future owners have better reliability than I've had.
