If people took care of their cars like this from new, they would last a lot longer. I often see old guys here in Sweden (many previous Volvo mechanics) that drive old Volvo S60:s, S80:s, V70:s, etc that they bought new, and even though they are 15-20 years old and have high miles, they look absolutely perfect. I suspect that these are the types of people that treat their car's quite similarly to you. Good job!

I’ll say one thing about the OEM wiper blade refills. I have a Honda Accord and used to be one of those guys that would buy the $50 wiper blade replacements at the auto parts stores when it was time to replace my wipers. Listen man it's nice to get the whole replacement once in a while if you ask me because the designs get better sometimes and the engineering changes. If components are plastic the longer you go maybe the more likely it is your super blade fly off in a storm. One guy told me it happened to him.

I do my own oil changes on my 2020 Silverado. The second oil change the dealer (where I bought the truck) forgot to tighten the oil filter and it was dripping in my driveway. I spotted it as I was honking up my travel trailer (6000 lbs) and getting ready to take off for 2 weeks of camping. I crawled under my truck and tightened it by hand. Since then I've done all my own oil changes and saved a bundle at the same time. I know the filter and the oil pan plug are tight because I did it. Love this channel.

I had the GM dealership change the oil the first time...they overfilled it. Then I tried a local repair garage, they overfilled it. It's a pain it the ass to let half a litre of oil out. Great video as usual. Only thing I will disagree about is the 5k or "every 6 months" on an oil change. I manufacture additives and viscosity modifiers used by all the big oil companies around the world. I assure you oil sitting in a pan does not go bad in 6 months. On average it actually takes about 5 years for any kind of separation or gelling to occur. Sure oil is cheap, but no need to be wasteful. I have more cars than any normal person should honestly so they often take a few years to rack up 5k miles. Its your car so there is no wrong answer, I just dont want people thinking you HAVE to actually follow that recommendation. It exists only to keep money flowing to the oil giants.

Rattles are not as frequent as they used to be, in my experience. I never go over 6 months on an oil regardless of the miles I put on. We can't go 10,000 miles between oil changes in North Dakota. It can get negative 30 below zero in the winter. Toyota dealer here says 10,000 mile changes are just fine. Thanks for telling it like it is.

And I’m sure the car will be “just fine” with those 10k Lube jobs. It won’t be spotless and running @ 100% when it has 150,000 miles on the clock but 95-90% performance is perfectly fine for most people who would rather save that $1,000 on maintenance and use it for something else 🤷🏻‍♂️ That’s how the manufacturer looks at it. Besides, they want you to come back in 5 years and trade in your old car for a new model before the warranty expires.

I just bought my Camry Hybrid LE last month and your video has been very helpful. Like you, I was a long-standing skeptic of hybrids. This year, I decided that if I go with one, it would have to be a brand that had been in the hybrid biz for awhile. Toyota and Honda were the two that rose to the top. I've had zero regrets over the purchase, so far. It's been smooth, efficient, and handles better than I expected. Getting low 50s for fuel economy has been almost three times what I had before. Exit question: Just to make sure, you're advice for a new car is to change the oil at the first 1000 miles and then every 5000/6 months, correct?

We bought the 2021 Camry hybrid based on your recommendations. 1 year we had no problems except the build quality similar to what you mentioned. Here in Europe, we get the one made in Japan and even though the build quality seems to be better there are some minor creeks and rattles on the inside. I believe its due to some cheap plastics that you cant really avoid if you want to sell a car for a certain price. Overall super smooth and comfy car. Thanks again and keep up the good work!

Thanks for sharing your experience with your Japan built Camry. I wish more people would see a comment posted months after the video was first posted. Last year Automotive News reported that Toyota announced they would accept sightly lower standards of fit and finish from their part suppliers to keep production going during the current supply chain crisis. If Toyota is doing it than everybody is doing it. All in all, I am amazed by how many cars they have been able to build since 2020. We all hope the flexibility in standards is temporary. My Toyota was built in California, USA 18 years ago. The fit and finish is exemplary and the reliability has been top notch throughout the years.. I expect you are familiar with the old saying - Form is temporary, class is permanent. 😁

@Eaton23117 you must not know anything about the Ecvt of toyota that is electronic and the complete opposite of a Nissan plastic belt cvt. The Toyota one is built like a manual transmission and doesn't have belts. My prius 2007 at 243,000 miles from prior owner never changed the fluid and I still did and it didn't mess up like a automatic which would of broke with changing old fluid. Hybrids are actually more bulletproof. Engine is not overly stressed, brakes last like twice as long, transmission is bulletproof. Of course this is for toyota hybrids the other companies especially Nissan ones suck.

Wish I could have gotten a little better trim level as far as seats etc but it serves me well. Need to change a couple of filters: Cabin and battery fan ones at some point in time. I am thinking with the batteries being run almost every day for a fair amount my battery life will last longer (over 100k or greater) . Time will tell. My mom has a 2020 RAV4 XSE Hybrid that I occasionally drive and I agree with you. It's a great car, drives well, and is very comfortable to drive in. But one thing I've noted was the build quality (or lack thereof) of the exterior parts. The doors are super light so they swing open and close really easily, but that also translates to rattles every time you close the door. And being a 2020 model RAV4, there was a TSB issue with the side mirrors shaking at speed. We since had it repaired but the driver's side mirror still seems to be shaking a bit. The hood and fuel doors, like the main doors, are super light so it feels like I could easily bend them when I close them, especially the hood since you have to slam it down to properly close it or the latch doesn't engage properly. The wind noise is also very apparent when driving on the highway but that's something we kind of gotten used to. Despite all of that, I think the car overall is still a great car. I really like how smooth the transition from electric to gas is with the eCVT and we still get pretty good gas mileage for such a big car (36-37 MPG on average). I'm also glad that they decided to open up to supporting both Android Auto and Apple Carplay this generation. I know it was a hit and miss with many car manufacturers in the previous few generations, either supporting Android Auto or Apple Carplay, but not both. It's too bad that the AWD Corolla Hybrid didn't come out until this year, otherwise that would have been my pick for myself. lol Unfortunately, I had already gotten a new car last year. :(

OK, I never thought about the horrible duty cycle of the hybrid engine, you make an excellent point. All the start/stop/cold running would dilute the engine oil in a hurry. I am like you, the slightest ratttles/squeaks drive me crazy. My 09 camry came with a few rattles/squeaks since new, something sounds like a loose wiper bottle, and the center console cover rattles/buzzes. Generally speaking, I think the build quality/quality of materials dropped a great deal on this car compared to my 99 Solara. The erratic idle has driven me nuts since new as well. It is like you say, a good visual inspection is worth a great deal, best way to catch little issues before they develop into major problems. In order to keep a car for a long time, you must be proactive in servicing and repairs. Sure wish I could get my car up on your lift, but would be afraid at the same time.

Hello! Can I run my issue by you & pay you? This has been over a year, 4 shops (Inc 1 highly trusted but doesn't do the work).I've gotten mixed diagnosis, "fixed" by Toyota 3 xs but didn't actually fix it. 2008 Camry Hybrid 116,000. In short, drain on battery while off (ABS/VSC alarm is on, all lights in the dash). I believe there is an open circuit or a short (mice got into the engine - esp by the ABS/VSC relay box). The alarm started when I was checking those relays, a buzzing noise started, I pushed relays in & out, & then the buzzing stuck, ABS/VSC alarm began. Prior to this the passenger side slid into snow - looked like it was road- was actually deep snow ditch...subsequently, ABS/TPS light on. The NEW (x 3) 12V battery never seems to get up to total green when I look on the engine-hybrid screen. The only way I have been able to drive it is to disconnect the negative battery cable when I park it, re-connect when want to drive...creating many issues during winter-snow-freezing rain when trunk has been stuck shut. Ideas?
