Good stuff, thanks Jocko and EC Something I read somewhere: If you do something courageous while "pretending" to be courageous, you're not pretending. The tie into that is: "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be." Kurt Vonnegut. Finally: We aren't what we say, what we think, or what we feel. We are what we DO. Gordon Livingstone, I think.

Is this true. Since if a person is not currently courageous. Just by pretending will he actually progress to become courageous. This personally seems sorta like LOA. Your free to correct me I'm a young guy trying to become disciplined...
@chrisnorris1959
@chrisnorris1959 Жыл бұрын
@@s.sarvin2666 I'm an old guy trying to be disciplined. :-) The battle begins anew every day, at least for me. Pretend means to "assume a role". If I assume the role of being courageous and perform a courageous act, I am indeed being courageous. If I assume the role of being a generous person and then perform acts of generosity, I'm being generous. Which got me thinking.... It's important that the "role being assumed" is done in sincerity. If I pretend to be generous and perform generous acts with the intention of using that generosity as means to manipulate someone in the future....I'm not assuming the role of a generous person. And I'm certainly not performing an act of generosity. I'm assuming the role of a conniving manipulator. I hope I'm making sense. Anyway, I wish you all the best in your endeavors. Take care.

@@chrisnorris1959 Thanks For Replying Lemme get this straight so if I assume the role of a disciplined person and perform certain acts that promotes discipline That makes me a disciplined person So I just have to prove it to myself. I guess.. Hope the both of us practice the art of temperance

And the more fear you feel, the braver you are. It's kind of the opposite of confidence. If you've done it 1000 times and are confident, there is no fear and you're not being brave. That's when we tend to get bored and find a fresh new scary thing to be brave at again

We always hear about the negative of those who react too quickly or without thinking. The man that ran into the street to get the man laying there just reacted without much thought and that is a positive especially for the guy that was laying there. Even tough Jocko makes his own "quote" I think it really comes down to the original quote. When he says that he ignores his thoughts on not wanting to squat and does it anyway, he's really "watching his thoughts". BUT I get it, either "quote" is fine, as long as you do what you gotta do. I'm convinced much of human morality, social norms, and law is our attempt to force skin in the game, that is bearing the risk and cost of your actions. That is because high cost signals are very unlikely to be fake, like bravery under fire. While talk is cheap and therefore often fake. Pushing your risk and costs onto another is perhaps the essential quality of evil, while voluntary ownership of someone else's risk and cost is perhaps the essential quality of heroism.

There are a lot of people that tend to watch the thoughts, words and actions of others at the expense of watching their own. When I say their own, if they really feel like their own thoughts, words and actions are better than that of others, there is very little leeway other than to confront the actions of others, at the highest level I believe, with that of their own actions. Social media really precipitates this truth and a lot can succumb to manipulation, which is why I have my mobile number on my Instagram bio.

I actually disagree Do or Do not there is no try. Voluntary or involuntary action in the face of genuine danger that could harm you will always be classified as bravery. Irrespective of emotions through the process this is where it's tricky if a robot with no emotion, like a drone was in danger is that bravery No. You have to be scared for an individual to be brave., However a person who witnessed it that knows he would not if done that action can call it brave. A subtle difference on Sam's point but correct none the less.
