I Bulgaria there are lots of Amazing Food, though alot of the people say there is no Traditional Bulgarian food. Because many cultures passed through the country and left their mark on Bulgaria.
That why we will call this list Classical Bulgarian food and drink because they are now classical consumed in Bulgaria and become part of their cuisine and culture.
This list of 14 are food and drink you must try before you die in Bulgaria

American here, married to a Bulgarian, and I can confirm that Bulgaria does have the best tomatoes. Nothing better than a nice glass of homemade Rakia with some tomatoes, roasted eggplant, peppers and oil. Also, Tarator is one of my favorites.

Hey there, another Bulgarian here. Let me make my add-ons to the list. 1. Fried zucchinis with garlic/yoghurt sous (it is a great summer dish and it is a staple in every Bulgarian household) 2. Eggs po panagiurski ( another staple made of poached eggs and served on top of a mixture of sirene, yoghurt and garlic of course and a drizzle of melted butter spiced with paprika) 3. Chicken liver cooked in butter and crisped onions And yes Bulgarian musaca is 10x better than the Greek one 😁

I like the short explanation about our cuisine I’m thinking on sending the video to some of my American friends. My American husband likes Bulgarian moussaka doesn’t care much about the Greek version because of the eggplant. I would suggest that you check out these two dishes - Patatnik which is typical for the Rhodope Mountains region and the other one is Drob Sarma. The first dish is obviously made from potatoes and the other one contains rice and lamb liver and is baked in the oven just like the moussaka.

The food in Bulgaria is extremely delicious because the local products are characteristic. Earth, air and water make fruits and vegetables truly unique. Milk, Bulgarian yogurt, white cheese, tomatoes, spices, wine, rakiya, lukanka, kebapche, liutenitsa, pickles and bakery products must be tried by every tourist. Have a nice stay in Bulgaria everyone!

Lovely video, thank you! Just some add ONS to your suggestions. Rakiya from apples, figs or quinces. Rare but delish. There's a winter version of heated up Rakiya (greyana Rakiya), where you add quince insides and honey and heat it up till it's nice and warm. Banitza with leeks and cheese, or spicy pickled cabbage. Yet another traditional winter dish. Stuffed carp (a type of fish) for St.Nicholas day and stuffed lamb leg for St. George's day. Another must try. Finally, no mention of the guyveche, seriously? Sirene Po shopski is a life alterning experience for most of my vegetarian foreign friends in Bulgaria. Cheers!

Gyuveche is a small glazed clay pot. You use it to make "Sirene po shopski" and a variety of other dishes. Kapama is not made in a gyuveche, it is made in its bigger brother gyuvech - а large glazed clay pot :-). Gyuvech is coincidentally also the name of a dish (meat or vegetable stew), which is often, though not always made in a gyuvech.

I would recommend the Mekitzi, the biggest I ever had was in the Rhodopes. All the salads are nice as Sneschanka, Rasradka, Kjoopoolo and don't forget the bean dishes the bean soup monastery style,, the bean dishes with Kebatsche or sausage. The Elenski but, I thought is named by the town of Elena not from the deer. And of corse you should mentioned the different style of Lukanka or dryed or grilled sausages as Banski staretz, Sudjuk or Karnatsch. My favorite meal is the grilled version of the Vreteno and I bake a bit western styled Pumpkin banitza with carrots and onions and spicy savory not sweet. The strangest Rakia I got ever served was in Samokov, made from potatoes we would call it vodka. Nice video, can't wait three weeks to be back in Bulgaria

Thank you for your work and for this yet another wonderful video. I'd like to point out two things. Greece IS a Balkan country (you say "all over the Balkans and in Greece). Yogurt is NOT invented in Bulgaria. It is a staple for the Balkans and it is made everywhere and for thousands of years. What dr. Stamen Grigorov did was to isolate and study the bacteria that made yogurt sour. It happens that the climate in Bulgaria is most conducive to have this bacteria colonies cultivated faster and better than elsewhere. Also, greek yogurt is usually strained where the Bulgarian is not. Hence the difference.

they were making yogurt already in the Pamir mountains, 2000+ years ago. The Bulgarians took it with them when they migrated from there. So they kinda invented it. the modern Greeks have nothing to do with the ancient Greeks, they are a mix of Slavs, remnants of the old Greeks and North African+ Turkic tribes. they did not invent anything, at least not the ones living there after the antique times. Cheers.

Please prove to me that most of these foods and recipes are not originally Bulgarian. When in Turkey and in Greece, everything there is theirs theirs only as authentic as their tomatoes, but in Bulgaria we got everything from someone else! I am tired of hearing this. Mind you the Turks, a nomadic tribe, showed up here from Central Asia only in the 14th c, but no one ever passed through there and everything is their own original creation that they brought to the sqvage Balkans that were starving until then????
