I think Jesse Enkamp had a part of his US tour where he talked to Sensei Seth, and they discussed hitting a bag with or without gloves. Jesse brought up the point that without conditions your weapons (eg: fists or shins) better, but with protection helps you train more. I think that striving for a balance of training both, at an appropriate level of experience, is a good goal.

I actually prefer starting my training without gloves. It makes you more aware how well you contact with the bag. Cuts and wrist injury usually come from bad contact - especially when throwing hooks. That being said: Even if you hit the bag well, it will still redden your skin and with enough time damage it. At least that's my experiment with our leader bag. It might be different with other materials. That's simply due to the fact that the bag moves and "sandpapers" your skin a little. But that's not too bad and shouldn't affect training much.

@@RamseyDewey Firstly, stance. You're in a narrower stance that gives you more mobility and speed than a wider stance that gives much more power. Secondly, posture. Gotta say I take some issue with a couple of things. "Displacement" does occur upon impact, but with a full sized bag like that, the displacement shouldn't be so significant that it adequately protects you from the impact. Especially if the bag was filled with concrete, as you say. Sure, it's different than punching a fixed, concrete pole, but to the human body it would make little difference; both are beyond the point of safety. Unless you are "push" punching, a punch thrown properly to a bag with significant weight will not displace at the same speed at which you punched it. Now, can any trained person handle that? I think the answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no. People at varying sizes punch with varying levels of speed and power. A bigger boned individual with average power might feel safe with bare knuckle training, however a smaller boned person with above average power might feel differently. I'm not convinced, for instance, that Ryan Garcia could get away with hitting a concrete bag, bare knuckle at full power, and get away with it unscathed. I don't think either of you are entirely wrong or entirely right on this topic.

@TheMatrixofMeaning Жыл бұрын
Once you master the proper mechanics and technique, your knuckles and wrists become conditioned over time and you actually forget how to do it wrong enough to hurt yourself. Like I legitimately can't figure out how I could possibly hurt my wrist landing a punch. Are you trying to land with a bent wrist? Just by seeing the video I can tell Ramsey is NOT hitting the bag full power, so he is saying something and proving the exact opposite. In this case, proving Icy Mike's point, rather than disproving it. Plus, your "heavy bags" surely don't look so heavy. They are not even full, and look much softer than an average heavy bag. People instinctively hold back when punching with bare fists (so they don't break their hands), and do so without realizing it. That's why so many believe they can punch full force without gloves. You would have to quantitatively measure the impact with and without gloves and wraps to objectively assess that beyond doubt.

But maybe you don't have a punch sensor, that's fine. Just please quit asking US for measurement methods. I'm just saying, if your bag looks lighter and softer than normal, it probably is. If it doesn't even look tightly filled, it probably isn't. If your punches here look way weaker than in other of your videos where you're wearing gloves, they probably are. If you want to say otherwise, the burden of proof is on you, not us. But I'm not in the business of telling people how to do their work. Just giving my free opinion on the free internet. @@RamseyDewey Because if you learn proper weight transfer you would damage your wrist, hand and knuckles. Unlike Karate, JKD which relies more on hip torque than proper weight transfer. So Icy Mike is correct if someone understands proper body mechanics of weight transfer and not just hip torque with minimal weight transfer. Otherwise you would damage hands if done correctly. Even when you were hitting the heavy bag there you pulled all your punches back relatively quickly. Which is fine for a TKD, Karate , KJD punch with just hip torque and not moving and lower body and upper body up and forward into the punch like a wave crashing on someone. Yet that’s not putting proper body weight into the punch for maximum power. Have you ever considered or ever learned proper weight transfer for punching? Go look up Teofilo Stevenson and how he transfers all his 230lbs weight on the front leg when he punches. Yes, at times you don’t want to commit all your weight forward so you can avoid being countered. Yet if you don’t do proper weight transfer then you clearly aren’t punching with proper body mechanics for maximum strength!

I've been practicing iron palm training for over 30 years, and I will say that Ramsey is SPOT on everything he said about bare knuckle punching and needing something that will give. That's why makiwara boards have some give from the padding. The makiwara boards that are made of rope are built on wooden boards that bend. I personally can go full power on a concrete wall without injury, but that is from years and years of conditioning. It's not that my hands are tough, which they are not, but because of years of practice, I have really strong wrists, and have gotten really good at sinking my body into the ground on impact while having good mental focus and breathing.

I'll be honest, I don't see how Icy Mike's video or video title was "clickbait." He didn't say you can't or shouldn't train bare knuckle, just that heavily prioritizing bare knuckle bag work isn't a very valuable allocation of training time compared to other aspects of training. He even says in the video that there is a time and place for bare knuckle bag work (to test alignment mainly), just that it isn't as important as other things you can improve on because the small bones in your hand are not like the much larger bone in your shin and won't adapt as fast or as reliably as your shin. And when he said people that hit the bag full force can't punch, he even clarified that's to people that claim they can on a regular basis in training and prioritize it over hitting the bag with gloves, not to everyone that implements some form of bare knuckle training into their regimen. It's understandable to disagree, but I don't think he's being disingenuous or trying to farm views with clickbait.

I like hard2hurt's content, but I found his bareknuckle video particularly egocentric. If I remember correctly, he admitted to having weak knuckles and even showed off his special knuckle protectors he wears under his wraps - so I feel like that would've made him very biased.

Egocentric might be Mike's second name. He thinks he's right about everything.

I find that going bare knuckle on the heavy bag depends not just on conditioning, but how you punch. For example, with my hooks my hands twist inwards (thumb to the ground and pinky to the sky), meaning just my first two knuckles connect. This did require gloves at first as it puts more strain on the wrist until it is conditioned. As for crosses, I have a habit of striking slightly down at a 45° angle instead of straight on, since this is more painful for most to receive and can also mess with an opponent's center of gravity. Doing this on a bag without gloves or wraps though can lead to a lot of skin coming off of your knuckles, especially on leather or faux leather bags. So I suppose what I'm saying is that it all depends on the equipment you use and how you use it. End of the day there is no right or wrong solution, only what works best for you.

Why is this suddenly so strange ? I train for 30 years and we always trained on bags without gloves...

Yeah, I hit the heavy bag pretty hard with no gloves, occasionally a full power shot. I tend to wear my gloves most of the time because it's hard on my wrists, (my wrists are extremely small, about 6" around, my arms are about 15" around).

And just saying if you are not intended on sport fighting, you should never train with gloves on unless they are essentially just being used for weight. You won't be wearing them In the event of a real situation

Broke my hand here recently bare knuckling a wall, can attest, full power on heavy bags; not on walls.

Could you do a video about switch kicks Ramsey? I’m having trouble with them but the gym is not really an option as of now
@edwhlam2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but as was pointed out in the video, it depends on what the bag is filled with.

Heavy bags are filled with tightly packed rags, unless you deliberately fill them with something else.
@edwhlam2 жыл бұрын
@@RamseyDewey There is no international standard for heavy bag filling. If I am mistaken, please let me know the ISO number. :) Even in the same gym I find density of the bags differ significantly. And yes, bags filled will rags are good. Some people use saw dust. Some use a mix of different items.

Maybe a better question is SHOULD you hit a heavy bag without gloves. I think a bit, yes. But it depends on what you are trying to do. If you are going to to 99.999% of your fighting in the ring, you should probably train the most with the same gear you are using in the ring.

Wrist strength becomes a factor. Most boxing gloves have wrist braces.

When I do heavy bag training, I do half of the session with gloves, and half without. Going with gloves gets weight on your hand to increase speed, and going without gloves conditions the knuckles. Just gotta know how to punch properly. I think that’s one of the things that a lot of traditional martial arts got right, especially certain styles of karate. Hell, watch any Michael Jai White film lol 😂😂

I’ve hit a heavy bag full force, bare knuckle, for years.this guy your talking about *cough cough icy mike from hard2hurt* is being ridiculous 😂

I feel the issue is less the risk of spraining your wrist and more that the skin is being grated of my knuckles if i dont wear gloves on the bag, my knuckles start bleeding after 10 minutes

I use to hit my heavy bag full force without gloves when I was a teenager, and I don't recommend it. My form was pretty good, I did a reasonable amount of knuckle conditioning on concrete. Even with good form and condition, if you punch a canvas punching bag as hard as you can enough times you will open the skin over your knuckles, and it took at least a few weeks for that skin to heel, and it will take even longer if you do any punching with scabs on our knuckles. Maybe the smooth surface bags aren't as bad, but canvas will mess you up lol.
