Idk to my ears it's one of those "please don't name this chord" chords, it's a passing chord that probably just represents good voice leading in both hands and it happens to spell something abhorrent The notes he's playing over that chord are mostly F minor pentatonic really, I think the most big-brained thing he did was to not think about that chord and just play a good line

@@jonirischx8925 I think it may be more because of what he's playing. Japanese music tends to use extended chords a lot more than western music and western music which uses extended chords typically doesnt feature distorted guitar. The combination of distorted guitar+7th chords is common in J-rock, which is also what is being used here so it bears a resemblance. Well at least that's my theory as to why

Yeah I mean he certainly did a run without camera, to see roughly what to play. You'd have to memorize the chords before you can improvise like this, and to memorize them you need to hear it. So why not also play over it. Doesn't detract from the value of it
@bleuorb
@bleuorb 7 ай бұрын
It is an improvisation. If you're familiar with the chord progression and have a decent knowledge of scales/modes/etc you'd be able to improvise and ofc, with years of experience you'd be able to go as far as 32nd notes cleanly like guthrie. Not sure if this is a one-take video but it isn't unlikely that it's improvised
@shredd5705
@shredd5705 7 ай бұрын
@@bleuorb Certainly, but people seem to think Guthrie just pulled this from his ass on first listen, without any preparation or familiriazing himself with the music that's going to come. That's not how improvisation works, you'd have to know the chords first. Especially at these speeds would be better to know them by heart. Or it's a familiar progression he has played before or something very similar (which is my guess) and thus has some general ideas on what would work over it
@UnknownString88
@UnknownString88 7 ай бұрын
@@shredd5705 Honestly I'm confident he didn't have that much time to prepare, his vocabulary is out of this world. Of course he knows the progression beforehand and maybe played around with it and listened to it first, but overrall he mostly did pull that out of thin air. He's at that level, this is why he's considered one of the greatest.
