The league rule is: "All forms of harassment and abuse including, but not limited to, taunts and slurs and comments based on race, age, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, creed...will not be tolerated and are completely unacceptable under any circumstances.” Mennonite is a religion and so this rule was violated when Sim commented on it with intent to provoke. It seems really harsh because we aren't particularly sensitive towards Mennonites in Canada, but replace Mennonite with a different religion and people might have gotten a lot angrier. However, it's not up to a hockey league to determine what's culutrally acceptable, nor would the OHL want to open itself up to discrimination lawsuits if they were found to be protecting some religious minorities but not others. I think they've done well to apply to rule consistently and to the letter.

Brad Marchand is a clear example that chirping works, it’s a big part of his game. I’ve also heard he is a great teammate and person off the ice. I think we need to reign in the extreme forms of chirping (eg. racism, self harm), but it is just as important to develop mental toughness along with physical toughness in high end competitive sport. I don’t like the idea of a DEI consultant taking the edge out of hockey.

I think London wanted to make sure it was known what Landon Sim said. There are several reports of what Ethan Hay said, but since I haven't spoken to him about it myself, I'll just leave the rumours where they are.
