The “billions of pounds” required for Labour’s plans to decarbonise the economy refers to business investment, the party said after Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer sparred over leaked comments from a shadow minister.
At the final head-to-head leaders’ debate on Wednesday, Rishi Sunak pointed to a media report that the shadow chief secretary to the treasury, Darren Jones, had said Labour’s net-zero plans would cost “hundreds of billions”, but Labour said this was referring to private sector investment.
