I heard this for 53 years... from every one including hairdressers. And no I cannot only wash my hair once a week. Doesn't matter. I finally know what to do. Thanks to you. And I am ok to wash my hair every 3 days. With mild products. My hair becomes very curly with the right products. Thanks to you!

That's just racism BS... Some decided that all the 3 categories were for them and relegate everyone else to the 2's. The 3's need to be split into something like African type hair (which need more oil) and non african type hair (which need more protein). If someone is somewhere in the middle, they'll have to try both and see. If there is a roll it's a curl.... period.

I’m 68 and just found the magic of my curls 2 months ago. Always straightened it, with large rollers and even got up early when I was in High school so I could iron it OMG! Of course back in those days there weren’t any products, and all the hair stylists just blew out hair. How nice it would have been to show off my natural curls in my younger years!

Here’s a thought…because we can have different curl patterns on one head of hair…what if…what if…we all just get along. I have 2a to 3a. And I even have a few pieces that can be almost straight. My hair barely gets along with itself. I don’t need another human telling me it is some sort of something else because it does one thing when it is wet vs when it is dry. My sister with bone straight hair always always reminds me that she wishes she had my hair…she doesn’t see 2a, 3c, or 4b…she sees bends. I love your waves and spirals Courtney.

Hi, I am 59 years young and I have only just managed to find a stylist, who actually knows how to cut wavy/curly hair. Mine is loose some days and tight on others. It depends on what shampoo and conditioner I use. I wash my hair 3 times per week. My Nan always told me to, "wear your curls and waves with pride". And I do. Take care all xx

I once had a stylist (from an almost exclusively white community) that you can tell the difference between someone with naturally curly hair and someone with a perm because the naturally curly hair will be STRAIGHT immediately after brushing through when wet. It then quickly starts to curl. Permed hair automatically goes to its permed state. Even if you watch Manes by Mell you'll notice that when she brushes through her wet hair, it is immediately fairly staight. The curls reform pretty quickly, but it's not immediate like you would see in someone with a perm. So I'm always a little befuddled by this, "if your hair isn't curly when it's wet, you domt have curly hair" argument. My hair is curliest when wet.

A few years ago, while I was at home recovering from an injury, I learned that I may have curly hair. I am in my 60s, but I have struggled all my life with "bad hair." I was watching you, Courtney. I decided that after I retired I was going to find out what my hair would do. Your hair always looked so healthy. I have been nurturing my waves and curls for about 9 months now. MY HAIR IS SOFT AND SHINNY! That has never happened before! Thanks Courtney, for leading me to something I have always wanted. That is healthy, soft, shiny hair.

Loyal fan here.... I live in the Boston area and was told 30+ years ago by a well-intentioned hairdresser that my wavy, frizzy hair was "Irish hair".... (Read that as CHALLENGING HAIR - LOL!!) She gave me a few product tips that had helped her other clients, but nothing as compared to what you and today's advanced styling products have done for us wavy curly folks, whatever our backgrounds... Thank-you for sticking up for us and helping - not just labeling us ethnically or qualitatively.... BTW, I'm not Irish - just a thoroughly mixed bag of wavy curly hair genes.... and grateful as all get out for your excellent advice on this CHALLENGING circumstance. I prefer that to my mother's patronizing and near daily descriptive of my then frizzy, "😊out-of-control" tresses - "unfortunate hair".... followed by "Can't you do something about it?" (There's somehow less victimhood and more hope to be dealing with a CHALLENGE....)😂 Keep on rockin' your current hairstyle/cut.... It's 80% of the battle!!

That sound bite is like nails on a chalkboard to me. So rude. As if anyone has control over it. My hair soaks up water and looks straight wet, but the second it starts drying, it is definitely not straight! There's nothing wrong with being a wavy, but the whole "so much effort for beach waves" gatekeeping is just mean. It actually takes me more time to straighten my hair than to style it wavy/curly. Also, I love Great Lakes collagen! It is the only one that dissolves and has no taste! (And I've always paid for it-- no one has given me any freebies!)

I have not embraced my waves yet (my hairdresser asked me about a year and a half ago if I knew my hair was wavy). I was super excited at first, as I thought everyone wanted wavy curly hair. But after receiving very critical comments from people, I mostly wear my hair up. No matter how many different routines or products I try, I just can't get my waves to look decent. I have very fine, thinning short hair which I think prevents a good turn out. I'm so frustrated as I see other waves on the Internet and I love how beautiful it looks.

You've given me so many great tips on how to embrace my wavy curly hair. Thank you. My last struggle was finding a way to minimize refreshing/restyling my hair after a night's sleep. I use the silk pillowcase & will continue to do so but I'm a tosser & turner & found my hair getting squashed, flat & "straightened" from my movements. I've tried so many products/techniques on my hair when I went to sleep. There were always different issues, a major one being discomfort. I happened upon a sleep bonnet by Vera Mona which works to keep my hair styled & is comfortable. I ended up buying 3 , just in case. My hair is about your length. I've found if I pull it down to mostly cover my forehead & also in the back it doesn't fall off. It's very comfortable as there's no bumpy seams. After I put it on, since there's an opening in the top I use my hands to gently pull & guide my hair up. I use the drawstring to then close the top. Next morning after removing , shaking my hair & waiting about 5 minutes my hair needs none or very minimal refresh.

I have had frizzy hair most of my life (at least since puberty hit!) And I started straightening my hair at 13. I realized after finding the wavy hair community a couple years ago and experimenting that yes, my hair had very defined, albeit loose, waves. I gave up my on my first attempt but I'm going strong now! I have some tighter waves to borderline curls scattered throughout my hair, without using any kind of heat tools. So yeah, my hair ain't straight, and wavy hair is something to be embraced and loved!

I don’t believe it’s the curl pattern. It’s not tight curl patterns gatekeeping looser patterns. It’s the diameter of the strands. I have 3c in the front, but they are so thin, there is little protein to give structure to them. So just water can weigh it down enough to stretch them out. That’s why a lot of times, wet hair can seem straight when it has a tight pattern

@tessltaekook8501

Use more gel if it doesn't hold the curl. The amount of a pingpong ball is often required to get a good hold. Put it in when soaking wet still in the shower (but not under the water stream obviously) and then scrunch and get out of the shower and use a microfibre cloth or a t-shirt to scrunch out the excess water. Then wet your hands and scrunch in more gel at this stage. About a teaspoon or less of gel. Spray your hair with water so it's moist and scrunch thorrowly again until you're satisfyed with the look of your curls/waves. Airdry or diffuse on low heat and low airflow and try not to touch the curls until they are fully dried and you can scrunch out the cast.

@@MelissaBirchIt could change with hormonal changes. Giving birth, menopause, trauma, extreme stress, etc can change hair texture. Mine changed with every kid I got. My first gave me almost black hair and my second (12 years later) gave me curly hair that I still have. I always had a bend in it but nothing like this. I get beautiful ringlets and for the first time in my life (after it got curly) my hair is pretty and people envy me... it's been like this for 17 years now and only gets better day by day.

2 things: the gatekeeping is real, but it’s also complicated and very much influenced by historic, persistent, systemic racism. One can perceive the wavy/looser curl types (who seem to be predominantly white women) as culturally appropriating the hair care of tighter curl/coily people (predominantly women of color). I’m not saying that I agree with this perspective, but I think it does a disservice to ignore this facet of it. Second thing - how do we know that curly types are more predominant worldwide? Truly curious here. Just because the curly gene is more dominant, doesn’t mean that there are more people with this gene. For instance, stereotypical East Asian hair is very straight. I’d imagine that counts for quite a bit of the worldwide population.

Hey, Courtney. I have thick, coarse, and long 2b-2c wavy hair. I like volume so I like to style upside down but every time I style upside down my roots get so sticky. I know to not use products that are too heavy, I know not to use too much, and I know not to put product on my roots and I don't. I scrunch my products in, then microplop and plop for 15 minutes. Sometimes I air dry and sometimes I diffuse. When I airdry I flip my hair from side to side. When my hair is dry I scrunch out the crunch with oil and scrunch the roots as much as I can but they're still somehow always sticky. They're only not sticky if I style upright but I get less volume. Any tips on how to combat this?
@tessltaekook8501
@tessltaekook8501 11 ай бұрын
You could try blowdrying your roots with your head upside down on low heat and airflow at the end when the rest is almost dry, to get volume and lift. That's what I do even though my hair isn't thick. The roots still stick to my scalp if I don't, especially in the back making the back of my head flat. The important thing is to blowdry it before you scrunch out the cast.
