Bilbo showed true strength here. “You don’t have a home, it was taken from you, but I’ll help you take it back if I can” He gained EVERYONE’S respect at that point. He doesn’t have to do it, but he chose to help them.

Yep. Wasn’t cause he had to at that point. He chose too, with all the kindness he brought with him. Great scene.

“But I will help you take it back if I can.” And just like that, the Dwarves properly accept Bilbo into the company.

My favorite part of these movies as it showed something I always treasure in film and art in general; empathy. Here is a humble hobbit comparing his hole in the ground to an exiled would be king's entire mountainous realm, and yet Thorin actually connects with Bilbo for the first time then and feels that the hobbit actually understands at least a little bit of Thorin's pain. Pain he is unable to fully express and share both due to his own stoic nature and the responsibility of setting the example for his followers.

I do like how Thorin literally looks like he ate his own tongue after saying Bilbo left them, just to see him appear. I love how Thorin looks down for a moment of shame, then back at Bilbo, realizing the hobbit he thought was of no help, had the biggest heart of them all. 10/10 to the acting there.

Bilbo, a hobbit who is content with his lot in life is willing to give it up so he could help the dwarves find theirs. This must have been such a profound moment for the dwarves. After bring turned away by so many this ordinary hobbit is willing to help them in any way he can.

To me, Tolkien's work is filled with universal, spiritual, wisdom that touches all peoples of all races, cultures, and locations. That is why his fans love him so much.

One of my favorite cinematic moments in history. It's one of the few where our hero fully admits that this is out of his control - though that doesn't mean he isn't going to try to help, still. Real stuff there, even in Tolkiens world.

Bilbo had a bit of pride in him to stay, but he knew pride wouldn’t win over the Dwarves. This was the first step in Thorin accepting and respecting Bilbo Baggins.

I love this scene and how it was delivered, maybe the best scene in the hobbit movies. This is the message Tolkien has always been trying to give to his readers, to help others even when it is an inconvenience to you, to do what you think is right for the good of all, to be yourself, and to empathize.

That right there is why Bilbo had the respect of all the Free Peoples in Middle Earth. Bilbo is why when Frodo said he would carry the Ring all the powerful people around him just nodded and asked how they could help.

Best scene in the the trilogy. Still moving now. This was the moment that he started to win their respect, and Gandalf knows it. The nuance of his performance, and to a lesser extent to the others. is just incredible. Thorin is still a douche though.

Gandalf noticed Bilbo checking that the ring was still in his waistcoat pocket, then glossed over it by changing the subject. Interesting… I think that was the beginning of his suspicions that Bilbo had the one ring 🤔🤷♂️

If only the second and third movies had lived up to the first. The whole trilogy peaked with this moment. Unfortunately Peter Jackson’s own pride had gotten to him at this point and he stuffed the rest of the movies with irrelevant nonsense. To the point where even though they gave Bilbo a Hero Moment here, he was almost irrelevant the rest of the way through. Especially in the last movie. Criminal waste of Martin Freeman’s acting ability.
