I'm just utterly beyond confused as to how this movie didn't do better, and how it didn't go on to have its own series, even if it was on Netflix or Amazon. Simply put: obscure character. Everyone trashes the stalone version, but dredd is actually a pretty obscure character as far as comic book characters are concerned. As such, many people didn't see what was shown and think it was anything more than a generic shootflick. As such, being as those are a dime a dozen, people didn't bother to hold interest. Stalone version brought in people due to 'star power'. People knew stalone, so they were interested in the cheesy hammy acting that even at the time he was known for, because it made for an entertaining time. Many people even now don't even know dredd started as a comic. With no real 'star power' and an obscure character that many people who even know of, think started with a hammy action flick from ages back, thrown together, it was essentially a raw deal based solely on a lack of popularity. Good actors can't sell a movie, if people don't yet know that actor. If anything, it shows how well the movie was that it's becoming more popular after release, rather than being popular at release and dying out. Because it reinforces what your point was: the movie was good.

@CLaw-tb5gg Жыл бұрын
I think it's fair to say it's the way we'd like to think of Dredd as being these days and it's a good modern take, but it's not actually very faithful to the comics. The comics absolutely have their grittier and darker moments and the tone changed over the years, but they very frequently have a strong streak of silliness running through them and don't take themselves terribly seriously, which is very unfashionable these days and would probably make people think the movie was utter crap if you made a completely faithful adaptation (imagine if this movie had Walter the Wobot or Uggie Apelino in it.. the mind somewhat boggles).
@praetorian98235 ай бұрын
Karl Urban is apparently a *massive* Judge Dredd fan, which probably explained part of it. Supposedly they had a few scenes where Dredd took off his helmet to give Urban some exposure. He straight up said “no” and completely refused to take his helmet off ever on set.

The scene tells itself, with a slightly western feel even having the child coming out from his apartment and being beckoned to go back in. I know this film got recognition and acclaim after the fact, but it's still under rated. Watching The Boys, I cannot integrate the idea that Billy Butcher, Karl Urban, is Dredd. From voice to mannerisms, good lord that man is entirely talented. Never takes the helmet off, which if I recall correctly was a contract demand for the role *from Karl Urban*. He demanded that he not show his face. You have to have a lot of respect for not only the art form of film, but also the source material itself to star in a movie and never show your face, simply because Dredd never does in the comics (I'm not entirely versed, I'm sure it's happened because why wouldn't it eventually, but you get what I'm saying). He does more acting from the nose down than 99% of actors can do with their entire face. It's a perfect film, and the embodiment of show don't tell. Amazing cinematography, tight editing, incredible performances all around. It was just marketed poorly. Like, really poorly. And it was following that campy Stallone turd, which to be fair wasn't the worst thing ever, it just didn't get the tone right. Judge Dredd is a heavy character carved from granite by an imposing and aggressive post apocalyptic world. He's not a sympathetic character. You aren't supposed to like him. You're supposed to fear him. He's not kind, he's not goofy, he's not lovable. He's a cold hearted enforcer in an even colder world. He has ideals and a code and a mission, and he just executes it, figuratively and literally. If anything beyond fearing him, we may be able to feel bad for him, because he's so clearly trying to do what he thinks is right and just in an impossible situation where no matter how hard he tries, nothing is going to change. Not really. He's so hardened by his circumstances that he's probably incapable of love, and THAT can be sympathized with. He's a product of his environment, same as the corrupt Judges are. It's a highly complex microscope put over the worst aspects of humanity. Even the "good guy" is a brutal executioner. He'll save lives, but only in service of killing or incarcerating those who would take them.

It really didn't have much competition in it's release actual window (it was an early Sept release film). It's only real competition was things like Looper, Hotel Transylvania, and Pitch Perfect which were all released weeks afterwords. The issue was it heavily over-marketed as a 3D movie at a time when audiences had completely written 3D off as a gimmick. The movie poster and marketing even referred to it as "Dredd 3D" as opposed to just "Dredd". You could argue that Resident Evil: Retribution competed with it, but everyone already knew that was going to be awful.

I really wonder, is slow-mo should give advantage in shooting. You would have more time to aim and think.

If Memory serves, Rookies got it hard, if as indicated a Rookie Judge got a sentence incorrect or wrong, they faced criminal judgement, by there adjudicating Judge, if a Rookie Judge killed a Criminal without proper cause they also were criminalised. But the Rookies Helmet was actually White. Not red and black.
@LandersWorkshop6 ай бұрын
Yeah I was a bit peeved they didn't have a white judge helmet, but I since she's a PSI judge who don't usually wear them I'll give her a pass.

I imagine this is what weed does for peeps who take it on the regular... I still don't know.
@michaelhaynes49463 жыл бұрын
It's a little bit like weed in the sense weed makes you see colors more vibrantly. Weed also can seem to slow time time. Other than that this is nothing like weed.
@RPGeek3 жыл бұрын
People who take it on the regular build up an insane tolerance for it. That's why they need to smoke so much of it. Just to get the same feeling you, someone who doesn't do weed (or someone who smokes casually) get by smoking one
@breadtoast10363 жыл бұрын
@@michaelhaynes4946 I wouldn't say that's what weed does. No hostility, but I run a dispensary and partake myself. I would better say it's like being sleep deprived after two days with waves of euphoria and honestly I heard from multiple customers that in a way It slightly alters your perspection making you think a little diffrent close to how alchole can alter your thoughts process but with out hindering motor control unless a huge dose is taken.

This movie is great fun but my God they got the helmet design so badly wrong. The eye sections are about two inches above the eyes. It may have been so low a budget they had to do "one size fits all" but surely Dredd himself should have had a custom made helmet. Look at Stalone's film to see it done right ( although this is by far a better Dredd film).
@HappyCynic3 жыл бұрын
The helmet and the lawmaster were the only two things that really bugged me about this film.

The golden shoulder pads are too small as well.
@HappyCynic3 жыл бұрын
@@jasonhahn8797 I think the shoulder pad redesign was needed. They look cool in the comic, but Stallone's version proved how silly they look in real life.
@jasonhahn87973 жыл бұрын
@@HappyCynic true. They would of stuck like a soar thumb in this movie. And by the way the helmet got one thing right in this movie and that was the "X" shape on the visor. The original movie didn't have that.
@rossvolkmann11613 жыл бұрын
Most filmmakers aren't trying to recreate the visuals of a comic or novel or video game 1:1. It's likely that several versions of the Dredd costume were mocked up and screentested. Even before principal photography on a movie begins you sort of know what it's going to look like in terms of lighting, color palette, and overall visual language. The costume that made it into the movie was always going to be the design that worked best with the film's other aesthetics, and if that design didn't faithfully copy the source material so be it. It would have been incompetent filmmaking to choose rigid authenticity over form. As is, the Dredd costume we got in Dredd 2012 does its job very well. By contouring helm design and replacing the giant golden eagles with more 'tactical' shoulder guards the costume communicates that this story takes place in a more grounded setting than the Stallone movie.

Well, it's coming. Watch the news, people have been handing out second chances to criminals, only for them to get shot in the face after letting them go. People are about to snap if you havent noticed. The wokeness will fade eventually, it always does, and the people will expect the police to take control back so they can feel safe again. Crooks cause this to happen, not civilians and not police. Enjoy.
