This is great advice and something for the past year. I got cancelled my subscription to Skillshare, stops trying to do challenges like the 100 head challenge and I stopped trying to use and own all the drawing tools that were said to level up your art. I have been drawing with just pencil or ballpoint pen, pushed procreate aside in favor the Paper app which has only 5 brushes, am using a limited watercolor palette and am mostly only drawing what I’m obsessed with right now, which are portraits. Within a few months I learned so much and was able to things with my art I didn’t think I could do especially not in such a short period of time. I still watch art videos but I make sure I stop and start making art myself. You gave sound and very helpful advice in my opinion.

with too much to choose from we tend not to be able to make a choice. Applies to art and streaming shows, our brain is just overwhelmed by choice that we just cant make helpful choices or filter out the needed knowledge from courses/shows. def a good idea to just turn off the courses and just mess around with supplies

YES! Several hours before you posted this video, I began a new sketch with a layered grisaille technique. I am learning and developing my technique as I progress. As the sketch pleasingly developed, I told myself, “I don’t need an art class; I am already good with this!” The words spoken in this video are confirmation for me about my intuitive direction. Thank you, Louise. 💜

this is something i realized just a few months ago. i have been trying to learn to draw and/or paint for... years. i have not seen much improvement. this was all via skillshare, one-off webinars by illustrators, books, etc. finally, in august, i received a course catalog for community education classes offered by the local community college, classes not for credit, just for hobbyists. i noticed that there was a beginning drawing class so i signed. honestly, i can't believe that i am the one who has created my drawings. i never thought i could draw like this. we started with graphite but have spent about 3 weeks using charcoal and i am in love. i stumbled across your channel because of the "everything i know about charcoal" video and i am excited to possibly expand into some of the different types of charcoal that you have demonstrated. i think the accountability of a "real" class (it's remote, but we still share our work and have a critique session) is huge. i could watch all the skillshare videos i want, but nobody cares if i do the work or not. and that's how you improve! by doing the work! great video topic - i think a lot of people will benefit from hearing this perspective!

Louise,I have to say you are an Awesome Artist. When i was in school i did not like drawing what was put in front of me in Art class and the teacher told me i would never be an artist so i quit I can draw but that has been stuck in the back of my brain since i was 13 and i cannot get it out.I think i am ADHD and at times cannot sit long enough to do a drawing or painting, I am now 60 and have been itching to draw again.I wish schools would take such teachers who are negative out of the schools, there are alot of young people now who probably are told the same thing so they turn to other things instead of following there true passions.

As a soon to be 38 yr-old, I felt the same. I took art in high school. Art was always my favorite class and I wanted to go to an art school after high school. For years, I kinda just did a little doodle here and there. Sometime, toward the end of this year, 2022, my art itch came back. It started with pyrography and now I'm back and forth with watercolor and just regular pencil sketching/drawings. All you need to do, is pick up that pencil. Don't be desperate to perfect your art . . . Just go with the flow. Enjoy the process. 💜

Oh my gosh! You hit the nail on the head. I do binge watch tutorials. I belong to Skillshare and you’re right I keep thinking maybe the next class is going to give me something to make it easier or give me confidence. And you’re right it’s just a practice is what I need and I am spending all of my practice time watching videos. I feel like I don’t have the energy to do the work and fail, which I know is silly, but there you have it. Thank you!

This is well said. It is so easy to overthink things and to worry about things not being great/right. The only way to get better is to do... over and over again.

I think there has to be balance between learning from a teacher and practicing. If you're thinking about your art much more than you're practicing, you will become better in your head than what your physical skills can keep up with. On the other hand, practice will not make perfect if youre practicing the wrong thing. As a beginner I watched tutorials on the specific medium I was using to learn how to handle it. Now, as a more advanced artist, I enjoy watching tutorials for different mediums even if i dont intend to use them.. I often learn transferable skills that are not commonly used in my medium (watercolour and coloured pencil) and gain inspiration to push further out of the box with my materials :) Balance is everything.

Hi, this is second video of Yours that I saw and I have to say... Besides Your calming voice... It really got me. I'm not watching courses though, I'm constantly "inspiring"myself by watching other artists' work and that is almost the same. The proportion You mensioned - would be perfect I think. So, I want to make an official promise, that from now on, I would be painting and sketching instead of watching and watching 💪😊 THANK YOU. For honesty ❤️❤️❤️

Good advice-no substitute for hands on practice- limit video watching to just a very few and keep the thought that you should do what works for you instead of rigidly following rules for doing your art by someone else's say so :)

Thank you, Louise. Not just for this one, but for all of your video's. It feels like I have found you at the right time. I started my art journey half a year ago and fell in similar pit-falls, annoyances and frustrations as you have it seems. I am guilty of tutorial binging, scared to start something, because what if i suck? Well.. I did suck at first. And I'm ok with that (now :P). I am slowly sucking less. I have by now found a good modus to use skillshare and youtube: setting goals for myself and using 1 or 2 classes focused on something I really want to learn and improve in. I really enjoyed your bird sketching class! And what do you know: I found out that I can actually draw birds. And by the way, thank you so much for mentioning Cal Newport in one of your video's. I've read his book a month ago, have almost completely gotten rid of my doomscrolling habit and made a list of what I am allowing myself to do online. I love all the extra time I have now for.. practicing art! It really was an eye opener for me, reading his book. Ok, so rant over for me. So far my first fan-mail :P.

What a great message. I just watched two different charcoal tutorials - one in which the artist started on white paper and focused on the darks, and the other in which the artist covered the paper in charcoal powder and used an eraser to carve out the lights. Totally opposite approaches to charcoal, and the results were both amazing. But which is right for me? Without actually getting my hands dirty (literally) I’ll never know….
