There really is some great potential here. I bought a liter of AUS Floetrol for $50. A quart of Flood Penetrol (at my local Philadelphia Home Depot) is $9.98. The AUS Floetrol is great, but really cost-prohibitive for a lot of people. With this being a viable alternative, it could really allow artists to expand their repertoire of painting techniques. Thank you, David, for once again doing the legwork! -Bear 🐻

I find that US floetrol works just fine at a much higher ratio... 10:1 or there about. The key to great cells and lacing, with swipes or blowouts, is patience. Swipe super slow. Wait to tilt or spin for a few minutes. Same with blowing... wait for good development before tilting or spinning. Tilt or spin slow. I think people watch speeded up videos and think they need to go that fast.

Thanks for this video. I just spent over $55.00 for Aussie Floetrol yesterday online. Lowe's has this product Penetrol by Flood for $12.98. The description, I believe, reads 32oz but the picture shows the can\btl is less in grams for $12.98. But still, we only need drops. I had tried a test with M-1 paint additive from Sherwood Williams store, and Celltastic from Etsy. I was hoping the M-1 would do it. But no, it's quite a watery additive too. The Celltastic if used on a pallette knife works like Molly of Molly's Artistry does and you've shown here. For me, my stretching & tilting technique needs a lot of work to get those big spider web like cells I want. Again, thanx for doing and showing us this experiment.

MY GOODNESS! ONLY $55! I can't find it that cheap bc I'm paying more for S & H than the actual mini sized product! I will say this...Lowes has hiked the price of ALL these prices. FLO was $7.98 in NC; last month it jumped to $10.98. Fyi...check artists storefronts. It's still $7.98 p/qt. Although gallons are extinct in my state. Please keep at it as I am unable to get Floetrol of any kind or Penetrol in the African country where I currently live. You showed 2 different containers of floetrol, which one did you use? What is penetrol, sounds like an oil. You can use straight American floetrol (water base) but more than 2 parts and you can get good results without using Penetrol. I've used about 6 parts. And you would have to clean off the oil before you varnish or resin.
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist 2 жыл бұрын
That is the beauty of Penetrol. You don’t get the oiliness like silicone. I think it also produces way better cells/lacing than straight Floetrol. My latest video from yesterday shows me doing resin on this piece with no cleaning and having it come out perfect.

Hi , Would it be possible for you to do one of your videos in the art of working out the paint needed for a canvas that hasn’t been treated to the individual amounts of colour amount mix you would need for different colours. Thank you John
@LeftBrainedArtist

Not sure I am understanding the request. Are you asking about working with a canvas that doesn't have any gesso already?
@combineNewcastle
@combineNewcastle Жыл бұрын
@@LeftBrainedArtist sorry you didn’t understand me , I-will try to talk since , when you work out the total amount of paint needed for a canvas pour that has not been treated , I take it you would seal the canvas with a satin type paint, you have your amount needed for your pour ,how do you divide the paint amount for each individual colour, does that make sense 🙃😆
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist Жыл бұрын
@@combineNewcastle Generally if the canvas is white (pre-gessoed) I don't do anything. if it is wood or a non-white canvas then I either use a wet base coat or I paint on a base coat and let it dry. In either case I take that paint from the total paint that is needed. It usually isn't that much so it doesn't affect my total calculation So if I have an 8x10 that I am painting I would need about 4 ounces of paint to cover that size of canvas. I would make up 4 total ounces of paint/medium/water split between the different colors. Then I would use some of whatever base color I was using and cover my canvas, then use the additional paint to do whatever technique I decided upon.

To follow onto another question... if I want to mix up some floetrol with the penetrol, how much penetrol should be added to a pint of floetrol? Also, what is the difference between the floetrol with the orange cap and the floetrol with the white cap? I ordered floetrol from Amazon 2 times recently. I received the one with the orange cap one time and the one with the white cap the next time. Both were ordered within a week of each other. Thank you for your experiments - and for sharing the results!!!!!

Good morning I have a question not about this particular topic but about your paint calculator. When you calculate the amount of paint, is that just the base paint that you lay down if you were doing for example a Dutch pour, where you lay down the base and then you add the colours, so do you subtract the approximate amount of the colours from the amount of the base calculation I don’t want to say. How incredibly informative I find your videos. I have learnt so much from you and as I’m a novice I continue to learn every day So thank you so much
@LeftBrainedArtist
@LeftBrainedArtist 2 жыл бұрын
No, that is the total of all paint use including the base. If you put a base down you normally use 30% or so. If you are doing a dutch pour you end up using 60% or so for the base and the flood and then 30% for the colors.
