I went to the Flood web site and asked them through customer service via email what the difference was between Aussie and US floetrol. Here is the answer they sent, and they don’t say they’re the same. “Thank you for contacting PPG. Australian Floetrol is based on the US formula but they use their own resins based on the country's VOC restrictions. “ Just FYI for anyone who wanted to know.

Minwax pre stain wood conditioner added to Canadian or American Floetrol turns it to Aussie Floetrol. Its in a red can. 3 drops of minwax to one ounce of Floetrol.
@susano323
@susano323 2 жыл бұрын
@@teresaroper9993 I don't see how that could be unless there's a water based Minwax wood conditioner (which there may be). I say that because Floetrol is an additive for latex paints and no way any oil based product could be in there for that. BTW, the Floetrol people must have really been scratching their heads when their product started being used in art, lol. Especially because the ratios that pour painters use are far beyond what is recommended in latex paint (maximum 20%). Same for the treadmill silicone manufacturers.

Definitely something different between the two floetrols. I poured each into separate semi-transparent bottles and let them sit for several days. The US floetrol separated and a lot of a transparent yellowish fluid rose to the top. The Australian floetrol remained the same. I siphoned the yellowish liquid out and thought to test what remained but I don't have any positive experiences with the blooms to test. I took a photo and might post it on Shelee's Facebook page.

Interesting that the AUS floetrol doesn’t separate. I knew the US did because I’m always having to shake it in my squeeze bottle to incorporate .. I’d be curious to see what happened after you tested the separated liquid Marie! 😃

The AUS floetrol for a liter I get for about $60-70 including shipping from Wholesale Paint but The Fluid Art Company will carry it soon too and they are stateside .. if you ever want to try it 😉 .. but I’m really liking what I see with the US floetrol now too 😃🤗💜

Hey, thanks for your contributions. I just wanted to point out, though: Amsterdam paint (at least their Titanium White, & I’d guess others with a similar density work similarly, but certainly I’ve seen numerous tests with the Titanium White) is very commonly used/sought after in the acrylic pouring world precisely because Amsterdam Titanium White can be used as an extremely effective cell activator without any kind of floetrol. The good tests I’ve seen (I think Gee Pours & LeftBrainedArtist do some of the most rigorous, but I haven’t delved into all of ShelleyArt’s testing vids- I’m sure they’re great too) used Amsterdam Titanium White with just water to thin to an optimal consistency [the exact thickness of which I’m sure depends relative to the viscosity/thickness of your other paints]. In fact, the more I’ve read up about it & listened to KZbin videos like Gee Pours, the more I’ve found that it seems as if a lot of pour artists who know a lot & have a lot of experience in this medium/field seem to swear by Amsterdam Titanium White as one of, if not THE best option for a cell activator. I don’t know whether an opaque Amsterdam black holds up as anywhere near as effective for this purpose, so maybe if you want black or other colors or lacing/webbing between your cells, you’re still better off using an [ideally Australian] floetrol-heavy mixture with a bit of some other paint for pigment, but at least when it comes to white cell activators, Amsterdam Titanium White seems to be at or near the top of the list, even just with the right concentration of water mixed in. If anything, while maybe a little Aussie floetrol would make it even better (not sure I’ve seen that tested), US floetrol, being so far from ideal, might actually just be watering down the effectiveness of the Amsterdam white… Although I supposed if someone has some US floetrol you just want to use up, it’s a way of getting good, closer to Aussie floetrol quality results while still using it up (just make sure to strain it, as you said)… But it also runs the risk of being a waste of Amsterdam Titanium White, & lowering the quality from what it would be with it alone (so I’d go easy on the Amsterdam if you do this & have a very limited supply). Anyway, that’s not to say it invalidates your recipe by any means- if it works then it works, & US floetrol isn’t exactly hard to come by, so it’s good to know it’s an option. However, as far as a US floetrol experiment/test is concerned, it doesn’t really tell you/us anything about the viability of US floetrol itself as a cell activator, because of course if you mix pretty much any fluid with an extremely effective cell activator like their Titanium White (even just water, but also rubbing alcohol, pouring medium, etc.) in a viable proportion that doesn’t ruin the better cell activator, it’s still going to produce impressive cells, regardless of how much or little the worse constituent component contributes- as is proven by the fact that Amsterdam Titanium White & plain old water works extremely well, whereas water on its own generally won’t contribute to producing any cells. That is, unless there’s an oil present, such that cells can be produced by the repulsion & separation of oil & water-based solutions, as in the silicon oil method, rather than by the Rayleigh Instabikity effect produced by differing densities of fluids, like how floetrol & Amsterdam white both work, creating variation among the densities of the different paints]. Anyway, that’s my impression! Hope any of that is helpful. I’d be fascinated to see you compare Amsterdam Titanium White mixed with various fluids in various proportions, along with US vs Aussie floetrol in varying proportions. For instance, Amsterdam white & water in a 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 ratio (I don’t know how high or in what increments it’d make the most sense to go), but then the same with MinWax, the same with each floetrol, & really get to the bottom of what are viable & what are optimal options for cell activation.

Just love your tenacity! Also your willingness to spend your money on materials to experiment. I taught jewelry with a new material which WAS fine silver particles which were used mixed with a binder to create a silver clay. When fired in a kiln all the binder burned out and left a silver piece of jewelry. It was a period which required constant experimentation and reinvention of suitable tools. Money, money, money but very rewarding. That’s what you are doing for the painting world. It’s a bunch of work and loads of money. We did it because we loved making silver jewelry and loved passing on the knowledge. So thank you for doing this so faithfully for the paint pouring community. Good on you! THANKS

Hmmm, this almost solidifies my theory that the difference between the two is that the Australian version is just super concentrated. I've done quite a bit of research and testing as well and thought it might be a ptfd lube in the aussie stuff, but perhaps it's just super concentrated which is why it sells for so much more. A mystery we may never know! 😂 Nice work Jodie! Thank you!

Oh man Jodie! You made me go back to my notes and all the product data sheets and msds for the US, oz, & UK flood products and what I gather is this.. So they each uses a vinyl acrylic copolymer emulsion, just like what's used in flat through semi gloss paints. US lists it as a vinyl acetate/butyl acrylate copolymer emulsion but there are many manufacturers of these polymers/copolymers, so even though they might be using the same "compound", the ingredients are coming from different suppliers, different countries, etc.. If you look up different vinyl acrylic emulsions, you'll see that have different viscosity, specific gravity, etc.. I think the difference in the aussie and us stuff must be due to the SG and viscosity difference, which is why it takes much more us floe to reach the power of the aussie floe, because aussie is thinner (bigger cells)... Have you ever used a paint sprayer.. They give you this type of funnel on a hook to test the viscosity of your paint after thinning. Have you done a drip test which both floes side by side? In guessing Ozzie floe drips faster... I'm supposed to be working from home right now ha ha but later tonight or tomorrow, I'll give it a shot.. It's probably "that simple". Sorry if that wasn't in English, I kind of rushed it while I'm "working"! 😂

@@MyMojosRisin No, no this is so awesome, Diane, and totally makes sense! I really went at it hard for a while! I drove myself nuts trying to find the big secret ingredient! 😂 I've got a feeling that a little extra us floe plus a little H20 will get it to the same velocity as the aussie stuff. It was pretty interesting research but there are so many variables at play.. Temp being a big one.. Anywho, fb has me in jail for 15 more days of my 30 day sentence so I'm going through some sort of FOMO not being able to comment or like anything in Shelee's group! 😂 😂 😂 Thank God for KZbin and paint to keep me busy! Did she say she uses house paint as the pillow. Did i miss her saying what it's mixed in some ratio with something else? I've watched a hundred videos like this. Phenomenal work btw. But not one so far has described a full description of what I feel is necessary knowledge. Like fluid dynamics, science behind it, and always seems to leave out at least one important bit of info that when i get a certain point I'm like 'wait. I don't know what's happening here.'. It's all good I guess. I mean maybe they're making a living this way or maybe a lot of these videos are geared more towards people that already know all that stuff. Every art practice is a little vexing at first. But it took me a decade to teach myself to become a professional gemstone artist. Because people that I reached out to would only give me bits and pieces of information. It was a competition thing you know. But since then it's been 25 years and because of that I have helped people in-depth with every last tiny detail and consideration in conversation or over the internet for free. Because my experience was like I said so vexxing. I promise when I understand this I'll do the same thing. Again, mind blowing work! I love Howie you seem so genuinely mind-blown and joyful at what you're doing. I feel that way when I create good stuff too. That's The payoff for all the hard work experimentation learning etc. Beautiful!

Amen, For some tutorials, the person asks a question and is purposefully either sent down the wrong path or not answered at all. String art tutorials are famous for this. This lady, does not appear to want to participate in any of that. Painted dreamer is pretty straightforward and strikes me as having some science education behind her. And the reason your not getting a science tutorial behind most of these tutorials is they don't know the science behind it.

Satisfied at all? I've done about 30 small ones and feel like I'm only scratching the surface of understanding and ability. Know any good resources to learn from. I think more often than not individuals are not forthcoming with their knowledge. It goes back to even sharing a recipe for something when asked. I feel that the majority of these types feel that someone success will damage the success of themselves. Some of it stems from knowledge won through a lot of work and just dumping it into someone elses lap seems to easy. I understand to some extent but then should one feel this way, well, simply put, don't teach. Of course this goes against my grain because we should all mentor if we have done our jobs and learned as it is a primary function of bettering society and contributing to the skill of others. I totally agree about music. It is a disciplined approach with a tremendous payoff when one is swept away with its beauty and cooperation. Only thing maybe a little more lovely is doing music in perfect timing to pyrotechnics. Nice to chat with you. Oh my art, well, this painting is coming along, but boy am I messy. @@ThePaintedDreamer I don’t have any problems with the South African Floetrol. But then, I’ve never compared it to other countries Floetrol. The problem with importing Floetrol for any country one is in, from another country is steep, as it’s a heavy product.

@@kheatherNYNJ Floetrol dries translucent so it will take whatever color you put into it. This video was discussing the US floetrol as cell activator as opposed to the Australian floetrol (which is the magic sauce and one the course toots for good reason but expensive). I was trying to get the US floetrol to work alone here with paint and got it to work as a white cell activator and a black cell activator (2 separate ones) using Amsterdam Titanium white and Amsterdam Oxide Black.

No worries at all Terry, thank you so much 🥰. To answer your questions: A - if it’s a smaller piece that doesn’t hang over I’ll use a stir stick or spatula to get it up from the spinner, bigger pieces hang over so just pick it up. B - I use painters triangles to prop up my piece while it’s drying and scrape the bottom with a stir stick so it doesn’t drip too much. C - dry to the touch depending on the piece size is usually 24-36 hours bigger pieces may take longer and if it’s warmer and higher humidity it may take longer. I let my pieces cure about 4-5 weeks so all the paint layers can dry properly. D - I use varnish or resin just depends on the piece itself Hope this helps 🤗
