Two other features available in Krita that might be interesting for you: "Greater" blending mode (which allows you to make nicer strokes if you painted them with lower Opacity) and "Build Up" instead of usual Wash, which basically allows the color to build up even in Opacity-controlled strokes. The Greater blending mode is awesome for watercolor brushes. Build Up is not really used much, I think... Also have you seen all the RGBA additions now? Most are in Krita 4.4.3-beta; but right now there is even a proof-of-concept of the Color Smudge brush engine with RGBA, with a separate height map. // tiar, Krita's developer

@@BoroCG Little clarification: "Greater" is a name of a blending mode (in "Mix" category), but "Build Up" and "Wash" are options in the Brush Editor -> Painting Mode (available in the most common Pixel Engine; Color Smudge is always Build Up so there is no option for that). The RGBA brushes are just using both transparency of the brush tip to map to alpha, and value to map to either value or gradient when painting (instead of, like usual, just have either transparency or value to map only to alpha). Gives nice effects. // tiar

One thing about using flow is that it makes the strokes look blurry or smoky, specially in more rounded brushes. That's because at the edges and ends there's less overlaid steps while in the middle there's more. Opacity looks sharper because of not that. I still prefer flow for the mentioned reasons.
@lostarsm92403 жыл бұрын
So what I'm understanding is Opacity is good for flat rendering like the air perspective and light/shadow adjustments and Flow is best for defining the subject (the overall painting)....... cause I've been doing it wrong for years and... yeah.. fighting blending those opacity strokes ..
@dannypavlov9133 жыл бұрын
There's no wrong way to these things as long as the end result looks good. He's just giving a tip about his approach. I've personally never changed the percent of either opacity or flow and I haven't had a problem defining/polishing my paintings. If you are having problems with these things, this tip could possibly help, but more often than not it goes back to lacking certain fundamentals.
@Maurilustrador3 жыл бұрын
I've been fighting with that separate strokes for a year now, I discovered opacity actually works against you, but at the same time I was afraid of working full opacity and losing that control I already learnt. But, lately I just went with full opacity and playing with flow, nad its game changer, your drawings look better immediately, you have better control over the edges of your shapes, characters, objects, render, etc. Clean edges are so important. My drawings don't look mushy or messy anymore. Really really nice tip 😊

It's crazy how much this changed my relation with digital painting. I can't get over how much time I spent struggling thinking I was going mad
@Xtimus143 жыл бұрын
In Clip Studio Paint, I think they refer to Flow as "Brush Density". Since I mostly make cell-shaded artworks, I just use flat colors on new layers and adjust the opacity on layer and set blending mode to Multiply. In terms of fully shaded artworks, I just mess with "Amount of Paint" with pressure sensitivity. I personally find Flow harder to use since the strokes look blurry or smokey, but I'll try giving them another shot.

Thanks for giving some love to the criminally overlooked basic brushes! When I first started with digital, I was all over the place, using a million different brushes and textures in the same painting. It wasn't until I learned to use these simple round brushes that I got comfortable with digital painting. I didn't touch the texture settings until years later! I still use the round untextured brushes constantly while sketching/exploration. Have you done anything on solid brushes? I found that very useful not only to find shapes, but also to build up precision in finding colors/values. It also forces you to simplify and emulates the limitations of pixel art (something that was also extremely formative for me as a painter).

One thing I think that should be noted is those 2 settings may have different names in different software - they can switch places or sometimes one of them is called 'trasparency' (for example in Painstorm flow is called opacity and opacit is called transparency if that makes sense). Anyway, great video as usual :) I use a 4 brush setup right now that generally works for everything - 2 hard brushes (one opacity and one flow control) and 2 airbrushes (same).

ah, been there kinda aswell, trying to use multiple pen pressure options at once, for example brush size and opacity together, but for a while now i try to just use each thing for a specific purpose and it's been going a lot better. at first i thought it was kinda the default thing to do, put everything on pen pressure to make the brush feel "real" since i have no concept of how real brushes worked at that time. but after some time struggling to use that i thought i'd look it up and it changed how i use brushes and look at brushes and settings in photoshop. it's really a huge step to realize how much your brush influences your work flow and process and any issues you might have with it and lastly finding a proccess that you like yourself that will also appeal to your own tastes.

Thanks so much dude I was always confused about flow/opacity and never thought to look it up, I just thought I'm too bad at painting lol! I mostly draw and my coloring and shading is more cartoonish (idk, kinda simplified and done combining different techniques?) to fit my artstyle but it's not flat, it was basically me trying to find my ways around it with my specific brushes, and it was kinda a pain in the ass, very time consuming. And I've tackled painting many times, trying to do it similarly to you and other artists at your level, I got easily discouraged because I usually played with opacity only and let the flow at its default value, and was wondering how the hell do people sculpt with those overlay spaces between strokes, esp when you stop a stroke and continue it in a new stroke, and especially when using regular simple brushes. Now I know and I'm going to play with flow instead and maybe I'll finally get a hang of it a little bit!

I find hard edges work best with a brush like the dry brush from Corel. I made a ton of brushes based on it for procreate and infinite painter. The general dynamics I needed to mess with were charge, pull, dilute and blend. I don't think you can do it in Photoshop, but most other modern painting programs like clip or procreate will allow you to make them. They basically let you have a charged brush stroke that becomes a blending brush depending on either pressure or length of the stroke. You can transition between hard and soft edges really fluidly with it.

On software with no opacity toggles (is Boro using Krita?) I think you leave opacity at 100% and don't change it. At least it's what I do. You control the flow however you want. Flow is like the amount of pigment coming out of the brush, so if you're looking for a glaze, lower the flow, if you want a more matte look, increase it.
@tofutofii30973 жыл бұрын

@@tofutofii3097 Definitely. Matt Kohr from Ctrl+Paint has a nice and quick demo too about it, although he doesn't explicitly advocate for either flow or opacity. I haven't used opacity controls in years but it's because I don't like my brushes to look like markers that get darker every time a stroke overlaps, but there sure are many uses for that look and for that mechanism of darkening! Edit: Matt's video kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWicg4qAm9KWkNk
@louisklein92073 жыл бұрын
It's really something you need yo experiment with. Opacity is the transparancy of a stroke. It's good when working with multiple values and colors then colorpicking to smooth them out or blend colors. Flow is the amount of paint released by the brush.
