@@Pet1717 Actually, he was sentenced to 15 years with the final 3 to be served on parole. Based on the way sentences are served in Indiana, it's difficult to say how much time he'll actually do. Since I don't know the levels of all 27 felonies he pled to, it's hard to come up with a number. If they're level 5 or above, he'll do 75% of his sentence, which means he only serves 9 years. With time served, he could be out in 8. That's based on the fact that his plea deal doesn't require him to do all 12 years.

Disappointed in the judge. I thought he was a straight shooter until this. As the father of a LEO, this decision adds fuel to the fire of two different tiers of criminal justice. Had a 'citizen' pulled half of the crap this POS did, we'd be looking at double the time - and we'd get it. My boy and most LEO's simply protecting & serving deserve better justice than this. They deserve better from the system that they risk all every day to protect. We as a society deserved better and once again, the system failed.

@@artguymckay: He's 1,000 times the man you'll ever be. And he's such a man, that he'd walk away from you and thank you for your opinion. Unlike me, who'd probably slap the stupid out of your mouth.
@stratbaseballmanАй бұрын
@artguymckay sir, and I use that term very loosely, the vast majority of law enforcement officers are good at their job and do good work. I will not deny that there are a few bad apples spoiling the barrel. I won't argue there are departments all over the country where it's more than just a few and many of them should be punished for their actions, or inactions for violating public trust in not reporting criminal behavior of other officers. But to be disappointed in someone attempting to enter that profession without knowing anything of their personality, or character is absolutely reprehensible. We still will need police officers as long as people have free will. And discouraging what could be the person who, like the detectives described by the judge in this case, might uncover police corruption and do what they can to bring them to justice is just wrong. In this case you can get mad at the defendant for everything he did. You can get mad at the prosecution for accepting a deal of 15 years and not pushing for a life sentence. You can get mad a the defendant's subordinate officers and deputies who failed to report the crimes of their boss to the authorities who could do something. But to get mad at someone for just entering the law enforcement profession without knowing anything other than that is why not enough good people are in law enforcement now, they don't want to get ridicule for what should be a pretty noble profession. @Stevedrums741 I hope your son is a good officer and would be one to report and follow through on eliminating bad law enforcement officers from the profession. But why are you blaming the judge here. From what I can tell, his hands are pretty tied. He can accept the plea and sentence the defendant to 15 years or reject the plea and force the case to go to trial. The benefits of a trial is that the defendant is likely to get a sentence that would be much longer if convicted, possibly including a life sentence. But he doesn't know what a jury would decide, nor does he know how any witnesses may or may not perform on the witness stand. If any of the witnesses were to have a bad day on the stand and end up tanking the case this defendant could go free with no ability to hold him to account for his crimes. This judge was put into an impossible situation and chose the lesser of two evils. I literally gamble for a living weighing the odds and making my living by making the correct decisions. But if I screw up I eat ramen for a week, a heinous person doesn't walk the streets. I completely understand why the judge here picked the scenario with no gambling. How could he live with himself if he forced this to trial and a witness or witnesses make a misleading statement or a mistake and it causes a jury not to convict when he could have had a guarantee that at least 15 years gets served? I don't disagree the system is broken, but the judge didn't break it, and his distrust of the appeals court after they recently reduced a sentence he recently gave out sounds justified. So change the system. Search for and support politicians who will pass legislation to combat corruption. Petition and pressure any public official in a position to make positive changes. Don't slight a judge who can't waive a magic wand and fix it overnight. Edited for typos and to make sure the links to other commenters are working.

Foe those berating this judge for the sentence given, your anger is misplaced. This judge truly has no personal support for Noel whatsoever, and has demonstrated from the very beginning(to the extent he could w/o getting in to judicial impropriety issues), his contempt for Noel. It appears that the judge was sincerely concerned that if the sentence was longer than the 15 years given, it would have been open for appeal to higher court and possible reversal - and no one wants that. States have very-defined sentencing guidelines for specific crimes, and sentences are "weighted" by a number of different factors that are hard to understand by the public in-general.
