You finished your short film and you post it online? That's the last thing you should do with your film in my opinion. Send it to every freaking festival you possibly can and try to find a distributor! There's too much films online... The great thing with festivals is that distributors, producers, or even representatives of other festivals can see your film, contact you and things can go very quickly. Attend to these festivals, meet people there, etc. Plus, there are a lot of festivals that are eligible for the Oscars and for other great events, look for them. And then, once you exhausted the life out of your movie, post it online. If you upload it as soon as you finish it, you lose all those great festival opportunities. There's only a couple of David F. Sandberg in the world, but there's a shit ton of directors that started in festivals...

So much yes on this point. For low level indie filmmakers who don't have an audience online the festival market is the best way to go. Go to festivals and shake hands and rub elbows. Get to know other people who can help you distribute and/or distribute your film. Hollywood is all about who you know so start getting to know people.

@@sin0productions - True. I have personally experienced that. If one is just starting out, be careful of applying to big banner festivals. Just focus on free festivals or where you don't end up spending a lot of money.

Hey Ryan! Congratulations to you and your wife on the new baby! Just wanted to say how appreciative I am of everything you’ve done for me. My friends told me I’d never make a short film, but I just wrapped Phase 1 Production for my first short film. You guys have changed my life more than you will ever know. I cannot thank you enough. ❤️

Another thing to keep in mind if you want to put your films into festivals is to wait to post it online. Some festivals wont even consider your film if it has already been released on an internet platform because they want to be the ones to "premiere" the film. Just something to remember.

Great video. Shooting my first film, that's not just a photography vlog this week. It's been a long project in the making. I live in a rural area and getting people to help in this small town has been impossible, so many interviews that were no shows and so many flakes at shoot time. So, taught my wife to use a camera, I'm playing one role and flying my brother out for the other. Gonna use a lot of light stands and duck tape to hold mics and reflectors and such, but we doing it. Scripts been written for 3 years, now we got a story board, all the props, cameras, lights and mics. So, it's one week to shoot this western short film and then I'll be editing and re-watching this video about promotion... I've watched you guys for years and I'm gonna put all I've learned into it.

Loved the video, it was insightful/educational. The thing I have to ask though, is: what is it you're doing that causes the look of your video to appear more colour saturated? Are you doing anything in colour correction to give it that look or is it the type of camera/software you use? Are you not touching the colour in post instead and it's caused by something like your lighting? I notice it mainly in your eyes. The blue really stands out. If you were to turn the camera off, would the blue of your eyes stay as rich as they are on camera? I hope it doesn't sound like I'm trying to be rude but the thing I don't understand is why there's a trend in colour correction to make the colours POP. HGTV is notoriously guilty of this where when you watch their shows, the colours (mostly the blues and the reds) are way to supersaturated that when people where those two colours for example, it looks like the fabric is made with the same colour they use in reflective jackets. It's not just HGTV I notice this in either. A lot of shows on television are doing the same thing. Is this what they're teaching film students in school? "Okay now when you make a production, if you want the production value to stand out, you need to REALLY over saturate the colours. This is what viewers want, they want your production to look like HGTV and Old Navy got together to produce your work and attempt to give the view eye diabetes". It's pretty maddening when you see it. Anyway, super long question etc. but I hope you can answer it because I'm 41 and my eyesight shouldn't be getting better that I see colours more. It's supposed to be the opposite :P
