A lot of folks are knocking this video, it’s not for complete beginners. It’s for a guitar player who’s wanting to learn a new song. If you can’t play by ear or able to just watch his chord progressions then you will not pick up on it .

I love MJH- just enchanted by his music! If you want tabs, the link above goes to the page for the dvd, but there is a pdf on the same page that is the booklet for the dvd and has the tabs. I'm really enjoying the Grossman Country Blues Guitar series- but it's not for beginners!

@@stevedouglas7375 Steve, I could fetch just one kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGjbnpKgqrOWhrs I feel sorry that I didn't do it faithfully because I was bothered by what to do with other chord patterns, such as D maj in open positions. Surely my 4/5/6 strings are NOT going to be picked; but if not, then what strings, other than 1/2/3? I may have been thinking ahead of my lessons. I'd return to this one soon to learn whatever is there and wish you find it useful. A pen and paper might help.

Awesome lesson! Your video originally got me going with this and l've gotten a bit further. A couple observations. I'm not sure he always staggers the first melody note on the pick up but I think often pinches it with the bass note, changing the timing a bit. Also, I don't think he ever slides with the index down on the second string. You can clearly see him place that finger after the slide and even lift it when he slides back. He's just that good at isolating his melody string. Lastly my sense is that the incidental contact you mention on the 5th string is made with both the ring and the middle as in G position but the middle is not fully down. That plus 1000 hrs practice gives you that harmonic pop he gets there and at times you do hear his B note as he comes from the G chord. Thanks again!

Critical to get that MJH feel: John plays with "skip time", sometimes called "jump time" or "triplet feel". John Miller slips into without even thinking about it (or without saying so, or noting it on the TAB). So follow JM's play-through or just get to the KZbin of MJH playing it, and slow it down. Instead of playing ONE - AND - TWO AND - ..., play it DUH da DUH da DUH. In other words, loosen up! It's way harder to explain than to feel it. You'll never see it written out on sheet music; at best you'll see a note at the top of the score "play with a bounce" or "triplet feel". But almost all of the blues or folk tunes are played that way. If you're conservatory trained, for every pair of 1/8th notes (2 x half-beat) the first "half" gets twice the time of the second half. So 2 x 1/8th notes becomes a triplet of a quarter plus an eighth. But it's way easier to just "play it with a bounce". When you hear it once, you'll know exactly how to do it.

Focus on training a relentless right thumb that will play alternating bass without conscious thought. When you can do it instantly just by knowing the chords to a song, you're well on your way. When you can keep it going while watching TV or reading, that's your Masters Degree. When you can keep that thumb going non-stop while holding an intelligent conversation with someone, that's your Travis-picking Doctorate!

Great song, terrible instruction - but that is probably because its meant to be taught alongside the tab. You can find the tab if you give it a quick google. However, to those saying you should be able to just learn it by watching him, if that was true I wouldn't need this lesson in the first place, I'd just watch the original footage of MJH playing it. Best of luck to you all trying to learn this song :)

glad you posted the lesson (by the way if you just played the song a little slower and not talk what so ever it would be so much clearer, all I can hear is "1 and 2 and three and 4) I cant hear the notes very clear. don't know why you zoomed in playing fast then decide to not show up close. that doesn't help in the slightest. Mr Miller"s two vids on MJH are true transcripts of the tunes; spend the money and buy the dvds or figure it out for yourself. Makes me crazy when someone complains after getting a freebie. I say thank you Mr Grossman and Mr Miller. And, yes- I have purchased both and many other dvds from Stephan Grossman.

Oh for gosh sakes, y'all. It's a 3 chord song. Ot actually a ONE chord song. The Travis picking looks pretty steady. Just use your ear and figure out the tiny left hand variations. I'm gonna learn this today and post just so you see how easy it is.

given this tutorial in part 1 ends in tuning the instrument, I'd expect that this is meant for beginners. And so, I think he skips talking about too much in this video. This tutorial is not suited for someone who needs help tuning their guitar.

Not true at all. The picking patter is very distinct, its not the usual Travis style picking that I'm used to. It's extremely precise and you can't fluff your way through like you could if it the beats didn't have to align exactly with the melody notes precisely. It's not that simple and most actually play it wrong
