One of the main reasons people don’t have pro-sounding mixes is that they treat the tracks like delicate china.
In this video, I'm sharing how I executed my vision for Emery's "I Don't Know You At All," giving you some insight into how you can make more fearless moves in your mixes.

People should also record with courage. Design a sound to take a place in the arrangement and go with it.

can’t agree more. what’s the use of mixing if the source itself is lacking and doesn’t make sense in context?

I'd basically argue that making music should be about making big bold moves - not always of course, and always being guided by your ears. But even in arrangement and writing you could push something over the top and make the song sound 100 times greater

This mix is so genius. You really show your intelligence here and doing what the song needed. You were definitely being a member of the band here. Everyone is trying to serve the song and you did too.

Another great example that the mixer, can indeed, be one of the "creators" that adds to the overall presentation of a band's art.

This is a good example of a couple of things. First, you made a song more interesting. By no means a boring song or bad, just way more interesting with the creative choices you made. Second, goes to show the power of listening to the music more deeply to understand what's going on (and how to make it better!)

The first line resonates deeply. I learned this principle watching my step father and other carpenters/woodworkers handle wood. They drop and throw wood at work. They rough up the wood in tons of ways and yet they produce stunning creations whether it’s houses, furniture, etc. When I saw this I realized I need to be less gentle with tracks. I began dominating the track instead of letting it dominate me making hard and even destructive tweaks until I was able to get the track how it sounds in my head or even better.

i watched another video of yours around this topic, hearing it said the way you did completely changed the game on my mixes. My drums absolutely SMACK now and everything is starting to sound very cohesive. Thank you so much for what you do

Thanks! More of these vids, mixing is all about music and feelings, most of the channels out there are focusing on other stuff. This is great!

Fabulous video, great breakdown and flow. And like a true pro you demonstrate that even your own rules are made to be broken- you made a killer mix out of raw material that included a significant amount of tracking that might be seen as less than optimal. Final result is beautiful original fresh and spontaneous sounding. Thanks I learned a lot!!

Just started watching you and I've learned a lot in a little bit of time and have applied it to my master channel and I'm amazed... Almost everything that I've learned from different tutorials you say the opposite of what they said and yet your info is made a huge difference

imo this is less about mixing and more about producing, these are the touches that can turn an average song into something much more. These skills lend themselves more to production and song writing.
