One thing that works really well, is to collect rain water and water seedlings with that instead of tap water. Rain water naturally has nitrogen and other nutrients that seedlings need.

When I was very young once I ask my dad why plants start sprouting from the ground when it rains though we water our garden every day? he said rainwater has the nutrients to wake them up 🙂. I am 44 still now I am excited about plants when it rains!

Good Morning from the west. So excited to see that most if not all of your seedlings are doing so well. Now if the cold weather for you would go away then soon very soon you can go and plant. Looking forward to seeing how much flowers will come out to play with you. Anyways enjoy and have a wonderful day.

GREAT VIDEO--I love that you go over EVERY step. First question: I didn't hear you mention what kind of seedling mix that was--a standard one you purchased or a custom mix of your own? Second question: Do you water every day no matter what or do you test(and if so how) the dampness of your soil before watering? I struggle with knowing if I should water every day and pour excess off or test it first and do NOT water if soil feels damp. What is your approach? I think I still have an element missing somewhere. My seedlings right now at a month are not as big as yours at 2-3 weeks. I use the neptune's liquid fish fertilizer but was no;t doing it more than once a week. So will up the ante on THAT. But I welcome your suggestions.

I typically use a potting soil mix now instead of a seed mix … it’s cheaper in the long run. I water every few days … just check to see if your trays feel heavy because they are moist or light because they are dry … if they are light then water them!

I had never heard of the seedlings getting to leggy from to much heat. Good to know, I think that’s what has happened to my Alyssum. I had to use a grow light instead of my usual lights as they are in the garage on my tropical plants. The grow light got really hot.

**I have the same Mineola Aqua Violas in single seed cells - one week this Sunday (6b). I read to put them in the dark, kept moist, covered with a blanket/towel to keep the temp @ around 60-65 degrees. My thermometer says 60 degrees and I am going to keep my eye out for the same problem you have (I planted 20 seeds) Fingers crossed...

Do you not have an issue with fungas gnats? I've heard from many flower farmer's preventing with gnat traps is best to use bc once you get them, it can be really hard to get rid of them. It can destroy seedlings. Also, putting sand and /or cinnamon over soil.Thank you for sharing.
@shesamadgardener

+Mary Kennedy you have to have a severe infestation for them to kill seedlings. And yes, I deal with fungus gnats … I use the sticky traps and they are wonderful and keep everything in check. If I feel like I have more gnats than usual, I mix a 1 to 1 ratio of water and hydrogen peroxide and water my seedlings with it.

Wow .... I really need to watch this again .... First off where did you get your white fan ... ??? ... and just thinking about the fish fertilizer I would love to use that .... However I think that it would drive my dog crazy ... he would think that I was hiding treats on the shelves .... Yes he gets fishy treats and loves them .... While the seeds are germinating do you add grow lights or do you wait until they show up and you have removed the humidity dome .... ???

+Shirlene Higbie my fan is from Walmart years ago! That’s funny about your dog … mine loves the smell of Plantone and goes digging whenever I spread it 😬 … the lights depend on what the seed need during germination, some need light to germinate and other need total darkness to germinate, so it just depends on the seed.

Hi Judy! Once they are about 2-3 weeks old, go ahead and fertilize with something like Alaskan Fish Emolsion at half strength.

I just add about a tablespoon to my watering can which I believe is 3 gallons … then I dilute further with more water in each of the trays … you should be doing half strength for seedlings.
