I'll just add, having bought a few of Nick's paid tutorials over the years, they are excellent, very easy to follow and unlock all kinds of tools and techniques like this. They are brilliant and will quickly and simply demystify Photoshop (and no he didn't ask me to say that). He is just a brilliant teacher and the production quality of his tutorials is excellent. Buying a paid tutorial is also a great way of saying thank you for all the amazing content, like this, that he posts for free. I think we, as subscribers, need to remember that. Thank you Nick. Genuinely one of the good guys.

Well thanks for the monologue on how good the tutorials are, I didnt actually say they weren't good...? I was giving some constructive criticism on the fact that maybe just maybe knowing about the plug ins used would have been a good pre cursor ..? As a lot of people would have been lost from the outset..? Just saying...

Whatched lots of tutorials about luminosity masking and PS in general and must say you’re the only one out there, who gets to the point, raises the mist and explains things in simple, clear terms, so you can easily understand and incorporate that stuff into your editing. Other people - as you mentioned - kind of make it overtly confusing, to show you, how clever they are, who you will probably never get it. You’re the real dude, Tx!

Nick this is, without a doubt, the best introduction to luminosity masks and selections, I have ever seen. I learned to use them after buying Sean's , Greg's and your video courses so I am not new to this. But this video is the clearest presentation of why and how to make masks and selections. Bravo.

Good comments, Nick! I look at it as a bag full of golf clubs. You don't play a course with only one. In my own case, I start in LR to do the basics and end up in PS and sometimes use an old version of NikFX as well. Each club has it's strength for the need.

Great tutorial. I've been using luminosity masks for years, and they are invaluable for processing and really not that difficult to learn or use. Of course, the more you get used to using them, the more you learn what you can do with them and the more they can do. And thank you for exploding the myth that lightroom is everything. I think more important than the software you use, is to learn to use what you have and are comfortable with extremely well. I'm still trying to grasp Lightroom and all its features, which get better all the time! I do use Photoshop some as well but don't know it that well. But like any profession or anything in life really, the difference between someone who is good and someone who is very good and on another level comes down to how well they know the tools needed to do the job. Nick I've never had anyone tell me that you don't need photoshop, I use Lightroom because it suits what I do. Photoshop is very daunting for someone at my age and there are very few people that can teach it correctly, if you check out how many people on you tube teach photoshop it's amazing, and all take different ways of doing that. This is what is confusing, one example, i watched several tutorials on how to use the Lasso Tool from many people and each person taught it a different way. That is why I find photoshop very daunting and confusing.

This is great, i didn't know about those TK panels. I'll say the biggest barrier to this kind of masking and work in PS is that you have to know what your desired outcome is before you do something. For many people, working sliders in LR until it looks good to them is enough, they dont have the vision for wanting to achieve these kinds of results.

Great video Nick. I like using luminosity masks, all thanks to you and your great tutorials. What I think confuses people is that there are several tools that do much the same thing. Like your brightening- you can use levels, curves, brightness/contrast, or exposure. How do you know which one is the tool to use? Same with colors. Seems there are hundreds of ways to skin the proverbial cat. You hit upon it yourself in your interview video with the folks from Photo Cascadia, it’s easier when you have less choices. Lr has limited choices which makes your tool, or slider, easier. But I totally agree, once you grasp the concept, you’ll love it. I love it and love all the possibilities. Thanks!!

I agree that luminosity masks in Photoshop are powerful and photographers should learn how to use them effectively. But you are also correct in saying that not every photo requires that level of fine tuning. I find that Lightroom is sufficient for very good, but much quicker, adjustments in those photos that I don’t intend to sell, and even for some that I do. One thing that can keep the highlight slider from reducing the perceived contrast is to make sure your whites slider is adjusted correctly after making the highlights adjustment, it’s fast and works very well for many photos without ever leaving Lightroom.

Your knowlege...and the process behind it is noteworthy. Maybe, a better way to promote your way verses LRC's way, is to caveat, "Unless you need to process hundreds, if not thousands of photos at one time, Photoshop does a better job." What's cool though is you can sort of already create lumonisity and colour targeted masks in Lightroom and Camera Raw. The only missing features really now are adjustment panels like curves, as you still only have the camera raw lighting features to apply within the mask (whites, highlights, shadows, blacks) but still, it does offer the control. Plug-ins to create luminosity masks in Photoshop look great, but I do find it useful to understand what it's doing in the first place by learning how to actually create them; this will help to then allow the user to create only what's needed. The same in the actual shooting - learning the exposure triangle and how each camera setting works gives more power to the user. Fantastic adjustments on your photos, love the way you've explained using contast to add depth!

Loved this video, Nick! I use luminosity masking in Capture One in essentially the same way (which seems to me to be far more controllable than in LR) to do the same thing as you're doing there - recovering highlights whilst keeping contrast with the levels tool. I completely agree that just using the highlights slider, whether in LR or C1, can leave highlights looking dull and flat.

GREAT video, Nick. So helpful.Yours is the best explanation I've seen on how to use the luminosity programs, in particular lumenzia that I've got but always thought was confusing.

Great video Nick, I now edit all my images in Photoshop and as you said once you get your head round it, the level of control is fantastic and only use LR now as a catalogue for my images

Consider to get to know what a "smart object " is then... @Nick Page should also mention that when suggesting using PS instead of LR.

Timing couldn't be any better. this past weekend I shot some landscapes and waterfalls 100% with the intension of forcing myself to learn luminosity masks. Ill admit as a pretty newbie photoshop user, I really don't have much of an idea of what I'm doing, but I need to learn this stuff to your point of it becoming easy. thanks for the video
