@Ed Ward The sad persona of someone with a backward mind who feels we as black people should continue to suffer for the cause. We are all now free to come and go as we wish to wherever we choose. We as fellow human beings should be supporting and empowering those who have decided to try something different and it has succeeded. Angee with no man by her side consciously researched and chose her path with her precious children beside her who experienced many firsts with delight. Instead of praising her you berate her. I went out to eat hu tieu the other day, sat next to a black girl. She was extremely pretty, taller than me (and I'm already tall for a Vietnamese girl), long brown hair in rows, wide brown eyes, casual sleeveless t-shirt and jean. Her skin was mesmerizing. A dark rich colour that seems to shine under the neon light, like gold strips dip in chocolate. I wanted to comment on it, give compliments on her beauty. But I was scared that would be misinterpreted as somewhat racist or sth, cause the initial compliments were about her skin and ethnicity. I was terified that it would somehow make her uneasy and leave a bad impression if I say the wrong thing. So I shut my mouth and settle with stealing a glance on her from time to time during the meal. I'm truly in shame for my cowardice :(

People leave their home countries everyday to start anew in another country. It's not new and why would African Americans be any different. America is not the only place to find happiness. I think the more you travel the more you become a well rounded human being.
@brandonbrown69184 жыл бұрын
T j i mean if you watch alot of these videos, you see the significance of Black people, not just those in America. She even touched on it in here a little and its better seen in other videos. When a latino or just a Mexican person travel to outside countries outside south America, People dont associate them with Cartels. Now with black people, demonized worldwide. There's some European countries and middle east countries, who will harass and harm you just because where and how you look. So there's that little deep seated "fear" like is it going to be better or worse. Plus the narrative that it takes thousands of dollars to travel put alot of African americans off.(there was literally a study on this). I do agree though Traveling makes you more well rounded, can see what true proverty is, and can change your perspective for the best. Yet thats the difference, but shouldn't deter people though because........its more dangerous in the states if looking at statistics 🤣.

Angee is an amazing person and I love this. I am a white guy from New York who has been living in Vietnam since 1995 but who has been here part of each year since 1988. I met a Vietnamese woman in New York in 1976 and were married in 1977... still married. If I could learn Vietnamese then so can Angee so please take the step of confidence that you can learn and then go ahead and learn it. The Vietnamese love word play and Angee can have a ton of fun with some simple spoonerisms (syllable reversal like "hu ai yow = how are you".) People will love that! On my first trip in 1988 I can say it was so different than now. There were still Amerasians all over. America took them in a few years later, Anyway, I remember meeting a group of about 15 black Amerasians hanging out on Le Loi Street (Saigon) and my wife and I took them to the Bach Dang Ice Cream shop on Le Loi Street and had one of the most memorable evenings in my life. Today that would cost a bit of money but back then it was nothing. One interesting thing about Vietnam is that there are people of many ethnic backgrounds and some with very dark skin. Generally speaking people prefer light skin as Angee said but regardless... I don't think that anyone could comprehend the notion of separating people on a public bus according to skin color as was done in parts of American when I was growing up in the 1950s. And Angee is right about being able to do anything with exception political stuff. But I can say for the things I like to do I have never had any issue.

I'm vietnamese american, and i think people who are easy to offend and butthurt by "microaggression" twitter comments, WILL NOT SURVIVE IN VIETNAM. Vietnamese in Vietnam have a culture of being brutally honest a lot for certain things. If your fat and lazy, they'll tell you you're fat like a pig and lazy as a buffalo. If you're being a dumbass, they won't say it nicely. They'll be upfront about it. So even as a viet american, that took me off guard too and time to get used to, since in the usa, there's a culture of not "hurting" some ones feelings. Also, viets will ask you on the first meeting your age, your job and salary, and if you're married or not. And if you're 30 or older, they'll tell u to get married cause you're old now. These questions will come up all the time and these I'm still not used to, being from America lol.

I’ve had a friend from Vietnam and a few from the Filipines and I will say that they are truly beautiful in the soul as they are visually. Amazing personality and very appreciative. I’m ashamed to say that when the Filipinos came to my part of the United States to work they were treated badly..next to nothing. So I brought them onto my crew and I was shocked on how excited they were. I wondered why they were so excited and anxious because they were hardly ever near me, being that the Hotel was so large, I only seen them during pre-shift meetings. I asked them why were they so excited when everyone else was already saying that I, as a 24 year old black guy, was mean and strict. Angie is truthfully speaking because they saw, what everyone else did, that I was a very hard worker, they also saw that I was mean and strict but very focused on my tasks. Both groups told me that they see that I am constantly smiling and laughing and they seen that other people enjoyed being around me and so they wanted to experience my atmosphere. They’re observation of people is off the scale and they helped me to understand that about myself which has made me a better person on the inside because we all have that deep off feeling that’s hidden within. Their attitudes are unrealistic. They appreciated me so much that, unlike my American group, the Vietnamese and the Filipino group would not allow me to do any type of work, lol! They say I work to hard..to much and I can just sit, relax and trust them to do everything. I didn’t like it because (1) I like to clean my way (2) I don’t like to just sit and watch others work. When I say their Observation was off the scale I meant it! I sat, because I didn’t want to offend them, and when I say they cleaned the very same way as I did..they did just that and did not miss a beat. I’m grateful to have met such a live, proud, honest, gracious and beautiful group of human beings. Eventually I turned them over to another supervisor only because them treating me like a King was not for me. I love them all but they were spoiling me to heavily plus I couldn’t take them leaving me because their visa was expiring and the 5 months we spent together we became like a family. They told me they didn’t like the others and were upset with me but I guaranteed them that their new lead’s personality was on par with mine so they will be happy. They were happy and they took what they learned from me with them and I still have them in my heart and is still living by what and how they saw me. Their mentality, from what I saw, is “treat me good and I’ll treat you greater”. They know “value” and they know “worth” and they treat people accordingly. It’s a shame and I hate to hear that they are trying to whitewash that uniqueness away. I’ve heard this about both groups and this means that their genuine nature will become corrupt.

I did 2 tours of duty in South Vietnam in the us marines 1967 through early 1969. I was proud to represent my country as a Black American even having grown up the Jim crow South. I learned to hate the people who were trying to kill me and my fellow Americans. I took many of their lives in defense of my own. I realized a few years later after the war ended that I killed freedom fighters who only wanted to live their lives with dignity and not be subservient to white Europeans or White Americans any longer. They wanted to choose their own form of government. Think of the American revolution. Without dishonoring any of the brave young Americans who gave the full measure of themselves for our country, i would like to say , sorry it took so long for truth to prevail.

I totally agree, Vietnamese is a hard language to learn. I grew up speaking it, but honestly I speak as well as an 8 year old. I visited Vietnam a few years ago and I loved it. The cost of living is ridiculous, my family had lunch one day for 8 people at a restaurant and it cost $11 total, and we didn’t skimp on food or drinks.

Loved this video. A breath of fresh air to hear from a single mom who has ventured beyond her comfort zone, and faced her challenges. Great to hear that she didn't take the easy route of working at an international school because that would not have afforded her kids a true experience of Saigon/Vietnamese life! Unschooling is not easy to do well but the benefits are staggering, and Khan Academy is a great resource. I haven't visited Vietnam yet but I have been to Singapore and Indonesia so I have a vague idea of what life there is like. I hope your children will always treasure their time growing up outside America and I am sure they will become avid travellers as adults. Enjoy your life xxx PS. Vietnam is a very welcoming and beautiful country, there is no racism over here. It is called a communist country but i gotta say that we can just do anything we want in Vietnam except insulting governors (of course nobody wants to do that in such a nice country). Doesn’t mattar where you are from, doesn’t matter what your countries did to us in the past, we won’t care about that if you come here as long as you are coming with nice attitude. I am a tour guide in Halong bay , ive met thousands of people around the world and they always ask me the same question like “what do you think or what do vietnamese think of american or french (coz they came to rule and occupy Vietnam)”. The answer is we don’t care about that so just come. We appreciate if you realize your country was wrong in the past but in Vietnam we have a saying that you can ask any vietnamese friend to explain which is “đánh kẻ chạy đi, không đánh kẻ chạy lại”, it basically means as long as you know your mistake and apology, we will forgive whatever.

Maybe you can answer this question for us, my spouse was born in Vietnam but moved to America as a child. We are married and have children, would our family be welcome to move to Vietnam permanently? My spouse is also a (nonviolent offender) felon now, would that effect the decision?

Sunny Deise it’s more about does ur spouse have the right to get a visa from ur country and will your country let him/her leave as that personnel were once a felon, in many countries, people who once committed crime doesn’t have the right to travel to other countries. And also about the virus outbreak situation in ur country, u cant get a visa if u’re from those countries that have high infection rates

Thank you so much for bringing us this heartwarming story of Angee. As a Vietnamese expat living in the States, I can confirm that there are many educated people like Angee who barely make ends meet (especially teachers). It's worse when one lives in a high cost-of-living area like Hawaii, or other major cities (LA, SF, NY, etc). These days it's so bad, most young people in these major metropolis cannot afford to move out on their own, having to live with their parents because rent is so expensive (most other major cities in the world are like that too, but up until recently it was easier for young people in the US to be independent on their own vs Europe/Asia. This is no longer the case). I LOVED IT when she said "I was still qualifying for food stamp!" (for those unfamiliar with the welfare system in the US, only people living below the poverty level can qualify, and it depends on the individual state. In certain states, you have to be wayyyy below poverty to qualify). Her raw honesty, bravery, and optimism are very much appreciated especially in these uncertain times. I wish her many more happy moments in Vietnam and if/when she leaves in the future, that she leave with a good impression of the country and its people.

@Hanh Nguyen, I have the following questions for you: 1) What were you doing in the USA as an expat? 2) When did you first arrive in the US? 3) How old were you when you posted this comment? Before coming to America, were you living in your own home/apartment or were you living with your parents and siblings? 4) Are there people living below poverty line in communist Vietnam? If yes, what specific social assistance would such people receive every week or every fortnight from their communist government?

@@HảiNguyễnVăn-j3v I watched this video as a Black Caribbean woman 4 years ago. Since I watched it, I knew that I had to visit Vietnam. In April I went to a tour in Southeast Asia, Vietnam was the third countries that I visited after Thailand, Laos. I spent one week in a tour with a great tour company visiting Vietnam from north to south. When arrived to the capital, Ho Chi Mingh, I stay another week alone. I swear, I didn't want to leave. I was sad when I was leaving. I cannot wait to go back to Vietnam. This week, I kept thinking about this lady I saw in the video that motivated me to go to Vietnam. To my surprise, the video pop up on my screen this morning, out of the blue. I was happy to watch the video again. I wonder if she is still in Vietnam. It as a pleasure to watch the video again, now that I can relate to what she is saying.
