I wonder how he feels about people laughing at things that aren’t jokes... I imagine someone as insightful as he would know that authentic reactions don’t always fit a prescribed mold. They aren’t always “appropriate”, but still... feelings.. His explanations on art and marketing and politics and self are WHY we need real artists. Why we are in the state we are in now, tipping towards mass cannibalism, mass suicide. DH Lawrence (a complicated fellow) called us toiler-bees for capitalism “grey men”. Something elemental and distorted away from our humanity, half men, as if born out of the mines they work in. He says this empathetically. He called us upended trees with our roots waving in the air. Tolkien speaks in straight allegory; Smaug/smog, they “dug too deep”. This was some 80 years ago now. I think our fiction has become so cheap, our spectacle so distracting and addictive, a fruit-shaped gummy, our art and nourishment so artless and agendaed, full of short cuts, with characters nothing more than avatars for quippy meme-speak and shallow opinions, that we can see the ugly truths and intentions right on the nose now. The Walking Dead... Grey Men. The best films are now having to be made overseas or crowdfunded because this corporate machine wants nothing to do with anything outside of formula. Corporate entertainment is marketing for itself and for a cultural/political formula that panders to false nostalgia. A bad drug, a facsimile of feelings, but effective at producing the inadequacy wishing that makes us buy stuff and tell each other about it. Film literacy should be taught in every school. We would be propaganda wise. No capitalist power structure will ever allow such a thing. It circle jerks itself, insults us, and we show up with our credit cards. And our votes.
