Why? Some people just don't see the value in luxury watches which is understandable really. The pricing is becoming utterly ridiculous & as far as i can tell it's only gonna get worse. If they're happy snapping up cheap watches what's the harm in that?
@TheoandHarris8 жыл бұрын
That's why I recommended equally cheap vintage watches - diversifying the collection, giving it more depth and long term enjoyability!
@stephenrhodes77588 жыл бұрын
A few couldn't care less at the luxury aspect of collecting & i don't have a problem with that. It would be an ideal world if everybody would diversify but in reality it ain't ever gonna happen. Some will stick with high end some with low & others like myself will dabble in each & every field. You do however make a valid point when it comes to vintage pieces because they do offer the buyer an entry point into the luxury field that isn't eye-wateringly expensive.

Watch collecting is a personal thing & choice. A vintage Hamilton may not be the look or taste for some collectors, modern affordables may be what they love. This sounds more like a sales pitch to me, I think that the watch enthusiast will know when they want to sell & upgrade their collection. I myself love Hamilton as well as Omega etc, but if someone enjoys collecting watches priced at £30 even though they can afford watches far more expensive it is not for anyone to tell or push for them to collect someone elses choice. This may be brand snobbery on your part. Not everyone cares if a collection grows in value, it's about personal choice & enjoyment. My advice is, buy what makes you happy, keep within your budget, wear & enjoy your watche(s) regardless what another person wears on their wrist. "Financial easy way", what a stupid thing to say Thanks for your opinion.

To be totally honest, I'd rather have 10 cheap watches than 1 expensive watch. As we all know the holy grail doesn't really exist. Having 1 is just too boring for me, and I love variety. A lot of the times I find cheap watches can have serious depths in their history, you just need to dig deeper and find them out yourself. Rarity also exists in cheap watches, and sometimes their stories can be interesting if not more so than some overly-hyped expensive watches. I guess I'm not looking for prestige in watches, as I'd much rather be different with my collection. I picture myself as an explorer constantly looking for undiscovered territories, and I'm confident that breathe and depth are present in my collection.

I can't argue with what you said and it makes sense. However, I think everyone is unique in that regard. I am an stock investor and it is not only my passion but made me wealthy. When I built my Timex collection, I didn't do it for future value. I did it for the love of the company and what it means to me. My idol is the late John Bogle (founder of Vanguard) who wore a 20 year old Timex every day. It is not an amazing watch in any way, but it means something about what kind of person I am and always want to be. Although I made my millionaire dream come true and can easily afford a Rolex, I choose to wear the old school Timex because it reminds me of my mentor, my dad and grandfather. I also love the history of the company. I know this watch collection will never be worth anything but as I said, I invest elsewhere and do this for the love of it, plus I really do love the look of Timex watches (it reminds me of a simpler time). Not sure if my rant made sense, but some things were not meant to be explained and I think that is a big part of this Timex obsession. P.S. I also drive a 12 year old Nissan Versa with 200K miles. It is not because I'm cheap, but I really love the crusty look and style of this little car. Like I said not everything was meant to be explained. I also get a real kick when I meet up with some of my other wealthy friends and they are pulling up in the Mercedes, BMW's, Lexus, etc. and I pull up in my beat up Versa wearing a $30 Timex. That just makes me feel like a real original who doesn't give a crap about what people think of me. They also mostly wear Rolex and I know they don't know anything about watches, so what does that tell you. lol.

Great video -- People often confuse collecting with accumulating. Collecting involves a level of curating certain/specific pieces, whereas accumulating doesn't and is often price motivated (inexpensive).

Thanks for this video. Federico made a similar video last week and I now see the light. I am quite new to this hobby and had convinced myself my collection would have to be bottom tier pieces. I love the saying "to know the price of everything and the value of nothing" because it covers both ends of the spectrum: Those who spend for tons of bargain luxury items purely for retail therapy, and those who shell out for big-ticket items purely because they cost a mint and many tastemakers covet them. A good barometer point for luxury addiction is when you're pulling the trigger purely for either reason. Buy what YOU enjoy; never, ever break the bank for luxury items regardless of what they cost per capita (they're just luxuries) and you should be good. Another good policy is to only cop items you'd be happy to pass down to friends or family when/if you fall out of love with them. I've given tons of thrifted excess dress shirts and sport coats to friends and family who needed them and it was infinitely more satisfying than flipping them on eBay for nickels on the dollar.

Thanks for your honesty on this topic, not all watches can even be classified as a collection and Seiko typifies a fun brand that some people takes too serious. Watch collection can be an expensive hobby and there is no easy way out.
@hdp827 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you value. Do you value brand and heritage, or do you value watch-making in general. I own a Datejust 2, but I also have the Orient 300M, a Mako USA and a Steinhart Ocean One Legacy. I like brands that offer quality, regardless of the price point. Japanese automatics like Orient are amazing, and made in house, which adds workmanship value to the piece. But good luck getting them serviced. While Steinhart offers amazing quality, with ETA movements (elabore in some) that can be serviced easily. I love my Rolex, I bought it as a grail, but do I think it should cost what it costs, no. I'll buy anything from and Armida to a Rolex, or an AP if I could afford it. Its not about the price, its what you value in the time piece. Sometimes microbrands make improvements that swiss watchmakers are too stubborn to make. Like sapphire dome, or an extra mm on the size of the case, this catches my attention too. Go for value. Whatever value may mean to you.

Sure, I'd like a luxury watch but there's no way I'd spend $10k and above on a single piece when there's so much variety & style available in the sub $500 range. Enumerate some cheap automatics. Some are old -- like around 25 years old --- and some are recent -- like no more than 5 years old. Which ones do you get rid of? Sometimes the cheap automatic has a certain value to you; for instance, I have a watch with a Russian-made movement that has an alarm complication (like the JLC cricket). Do I get rid of it because it's cheap (it didn't cost more than 50 bucks many years ago)? Subjectivity is definitely involved here and sometimes it is hard to 'quantify' what we mean by value. This comment is too long! Sorry. Good show, C.

I think you can find quality at almost any price range and you can enjoy something that is ion your budget. Finally, you won't loose money on a Steinhart OVM. Just look at the used prices for the OVM on Watchrecon.com, they're more than Steinhart asks for a new one.

Justin Register Because instead of spending $3000 on a watch that can only be worn for certain occasions, you could have several good watches, each for a different situation? It's like trying to own a supercar as a daily driver, when you could have a cheap daily, and several sports cars to play around with for the same price. Some people prefer the former, sure, but to each their own is all.
@casualsuede7 жыл бұрын
Justin Register I think buying one rolex is a waste. As an owner of a mix of higher end and cheap watches, watch collecting is about wearing art on you arm that satisfies you. If an invicta, a casio or seiko satisfies you, who am I say you should not buy as many as you want? theo+harris seems to think you will be more satisfied wearing something more upscale or something he sells (not a fan of his vintage watches, most of his inventory look like junk to me), but that is not true for most people. Most Americans like variety.
@wookyoftheyear8 жыл бұрын
I'm definitely guilty of some impulse buys of less expensive (all relative, of course) watches. Some of them I kind of regret (Armida A2), some of them I don't regret at all and love (Zelos Bronze Chroma 2, Botta Tres Carbon). But I have stopped buying altogether, and am planning on thinning down the collection some to save up for some more meaningful pieces. Luckily I've pretty much only bought used, so hopefully I won't be taking too much of a hit on resale. One thing that is good about cheap automatics is that it can help you refine your tastes. There's so much variety out there that sometimes it's helpful to live with a piece to really figure out what you like, dislike or want, and use that experience to instruct a more significant purchase.

So I came to this video expecting another elitist rant against inexpensive watches. (Not that you've ever given reason for me to think that but the interwebs be a strange and brutal place.) I get where the cheap watch collectors are coming from because I've got the same temptation. Instant gratification is a drug of it's own and then you couple that with the mentality of "Why should I spend $X,XXX on that when I could have this for $XXX They let the price dictate their taste rather than the other way around. Just getting into watches I feel like it's taken me 6 months to even figure out what I like. I've set goals for my collection. So thanks for cutting me off before I went down a slippery slope of settling for taby cats instead of a tigers. Thanks for the thoughts Keep em' coming.

If you want to buy cheap watches then buy them. What’s the harm in it.

And again... Why didn't you tell me that 15 years ago? ;) And I've still got a couple of cheaper watches I have to get rid of! :-/

Personally I believe even costly watches are cheap to make. It's all the marketing and brand pomp you are paying for so why not buy a watch based on just what you really like and not because others like em. Tbh how many people really care what watch you are wearing and Rolex are for old men who have little else to impress anybody with. The reason Rolex has the magnified date bit is cos old duffers eyesight has gone. Rudeness aside just buy the each that you find beautiful you won't regret that.

That's definitely true in many cases!

Unless your last name is Musk or Bezos I REALLY don’t understand how regular folk have the nerve to shell out thousands of dollars on a single watch. Brands are always coming out with tons and tons of newer, cooler, gorgeous looking watches every year so I don’t get the point of spending thousands of dollars on a single watch when in a year there’s going to be another new, beautiful one that you’re going to want to get. You gotta be honest with yourselves People! Watches aren’t investments or even tools, they’re just fashion accessories (yes I said FASHION ACCESORIOS).

I find it so so des appointing to see so called watch collectors buy and or praise plastic watches with plastic movements that are 100% robot made. Absolute garbage. But with good marketing. Like Swatch System 51.
@Paul37Ontario8 жыл бұрын
Forgot to mention that you shouldn't collect something that is designed to be disposable, (like System 51) as far as watches is concerned anyway.
@xtomzta8 жыл бұрын
+Paul L very true.

The Sistem 51 is genuinely a terrific watch for the money. Shunning it because it is a Swatch is poor taste my friend. AP. P.s; they have released an SS one with a serviceable mvt.

Why is there never any love for Bulova? I see GTV, you, Federico, etc. give love to Seiko and other watches that can be sub $1000 but never Bulova. Is there a particular reason? To my understanding the quality is there, good movements, etc.

I’ll pass on “luxury” watches when Hamilton’s and Oris watches are exceptional quality for the money without the huge marketing markup that is given to Rolex, Breitling, etc. I would feel violated paying those prices, similar to paying the crazy prices for designer watches which should be 80% less than their price.
@apowers77838 жыл бұрын
Cheap watches are like meth; a cheap substitute for the real McCoy thus from now on I will refer to Skwaleee as a "meth-watch".
