Best advise I’ve hear, “You should love every watch you own. But you shouldn’t own every watch you love” Great video. Watch addicts should have a personal limit. And stick to it. There will always be another watch. But the one that’s on your wrist is by default the best one!

This video is about watches, but it could be about any collecting activity. None of them lead to happiness, not even for those who have unlimited resources. True happiness can't be found in financial transactions. The rush of excitement is fleeting. And after that fades, you begin to look for the next "high". It can be like any addiction, and frequently is. So what folks need to focus on is not happiness, but contentment. Be content with little and invest your resources where it will make an impact.
@WatchSociety
@WatchSociety Жыл бұрын
Well Said! You've expressed a profound and insightful perspective on collecting activities, and I couldn't agree more. Whether it's watches or any other form of collecting, the pursuit of material possessions alone can't lead to lasting happiness. The fleeting excitement of acquiring new items can become like a never-ending cycle, akin to seeking the next "high" as you aptly put it.

Yes. We need to slow down on our purchases as fatique is setting in for many of us. I am already making a conscious effort of taking a break from it. For a while, I no longer travel overseas with my nicer watches and I find it a lot more liberating.

Absolutely, taking a break and slowing down on purchases is a wise decision. Collector fatigue can set in when the acquisition process becomes too overwhelming. It's great to hear that you're making a conscious effort to step back and reevaluate your collecting habits.

I 100% understand where you are coming from! I found that I was less happy the more I purchased. So I set hard non-negotiable limits on all future acquisitions and now feel more free than I ever have. I've also not made a purchase in nearly a year!
@WatchSociety

That's truly commendable! It's incredibly insightful to recognize that excessive purchases can lead to diminishing returns in terms of happiness. By setting firm and non-negotiable limits for yourself, you've taken control of your watch collecting journey and found a sense of freedom in doing so.

Im an addict lol All jokes aside. Materialistic possessions will never fulfill us. Us humans are meant for more meaningful experiences. Life’s too short to spend our lives observing(to say the least) shiny objects that tell time. I know this next point will be unpopular and most likely will not resonate with 99% of us. I don’t care how much you tell yourself words like: collector, horological, masterpiece, elegance, heirloom,history, blah blah blah etc. At the end of the day, these are flex pieces that make us look and feel important like we made it it’s for everyone else to see as well as yourself, for the already stated reasons. With that being said, I’m still an addict and I still love watches I just don’t lie to myself. PS great video. Oh yeah the chase is the best part!!

I have a watch I hated because of the green dial even though I loved the model. So I bought the same model (at a crazy low Jomashop price), and I got a gator strap for the new one, and put the strap the new one came with on the green one, and the green one's my favorite watch now. I think I got a problem. (Just keep a separate watch fund you feed some extra money to each month though and never buy a watch except from there and you'll be OK!)

Absolutely, you've hit the nail on the head with these wise words! Buying what we truly like or love ensures that our watch collection reflects our personal taste and brings us genuine joy. It gives me a whole year to enjoy my latest allocation while saving for next year's allocation. I'm slowing getting more pieces as my tastes increase. Great video Habibi. I think your words apply to all types of collecting. As a retiring sneaker collector and current watch collector, I can see a lot of brands (sneakers and watches) are saturating the market. Looks like a post covid effect and they're all just milking the cash cow lol. A lot of collectors fall in love with the chase and once they're able to obtain that piece, does it turn into regret/buyer's remorse?
@WatchSociety
@WatchSociety Жыл бұрын
Shukran! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and you've made an astute observation. Indeed, the saturation of the market can be seen across various collecting industries, including both sneakers and watches. As brands strive to meet increasing demand, it can sometimes feel like they're diluting the essence of their own sneakers/watches simply cashing in on the hype.

It seems that the format sometimes emphasizes watch ambassadors' thoughts that may not resonate with a true watch lover. (Influenced rather) brands watch showcase might not offer anything beyond what you can find in Dubai Mall, and somehow lacking a genuine touch of passion inclusivity of the watch community. Recover from Watch World? What’s the point of that my brother? The air wouldn’t smell the same, water wouldn’t be as wet, and sex? It would be a pale shadow of what it is when you are in watch world. Stay here with us, the Sun shines here, there’s laughter and the only tax is the unplanned watch purchase! 😂

Haha, you're right! Who said anything about recovery 😂 Just taking it easy and enjoying it one watch at a time 😊 taking a lil control of unplanned taxes 😉 enjoy my friend!

Very good video and advice. That said, it’s seems a but hypocritical to get it out now that the grey market is dead cold.. you were certainly not praising the same way of thinking in your past years video when everything was super hot and you were all about those « new new hype watches » 😉 Now the time for true watch collecting and collectors has come.

Thank you for your feedback! I understand your perspective, and it's essential to acknowledge that watch collecting, like any hobby, can evolve over time. My past videos might have reflected a different enthusiasm for the "new new hype watches" Your advice tho, lol, get in now that the after market is dead! hahahahaha man I am not looking to pick but drop some off hahaha

Here's my comment. From watching your channel, I think that the watches that suit you are the black watches. So why don't you sell off most of the classic stuff like that Rolex Explorer, and keep a small but very diverse collection like the ultra classic black dial Cartier Tank, and large and sporty black and yellow Roger Dubuis. And maybe something black and gold. Just a suggestion. If you're an addict, you may as well push the boundaries of convention and do something really unique that nobody else does, find your own watch language.

Thank you for your thoughtful suggestion! I appreciate your observation and the time you've spent watching my channel. It's true that black watches do resonate with me, and I find them appealing. The Explorer, Santos DLC and Lange speak to me the most

I think what is contributing to the exhaustion of wearing a watch is the stigma or being a target for watch crimes. when I went to Singapore and Japan, I see so many people wearing and enjoying their Rolexes. Coming back to California, nobody wears a mechanical watch anymore due to the rising crimes and soft on crime mentality. I'm reluctant to wear mine due to this issue of crimes. Otherwise, I think the hobby would continue if people can enjoy wearing them without fear.

Safety is always a top priority! It's unfortunate that rising watch crimes have impacted the enjoyment of wearing timepieces in certain areas. Feeling hesitant to wear your watch due to security reasons is entirely is the right thing to do. unfortunate but true!
