Yep. I think initially some were shocked it didn't work but lately with the entire US entertainment industry and its spheres suffering the same issues, they can't be now. Those developers and access media mates insulting us and preferring we'd just shut up and accept what they want to sell us are refusing to turn around. Those types will have to be thrown out as they have no intention of pivoting. But if that happens the ones who didn't agree with it but kept silent to keep their jobs can.

There's an entire industry of cosplayers who travel from show to show competing for the award money and who don't actually know a thing about their chosen character or the IP it came from; only that the character is popular and looks cool.

Repeating the press briefing and pretending it's news is not a games journalist thing; it's a journalist thing. It's a success at the bush leagues (because access journalism pays) and why mess with a winning formula? Being a deniable mouthpiece for politicians, NGOs, and other political actors has many of the same access benefits you see with games. It has the same downsides, too, because the public doesn't get all their news filtered through the same few journalists. Though there will always be some few people who will prefer the stories told by favored journalists to what they see with their own eyes.

And played maybe three of her entire listed biography. *That doesn't mean she's wrong about anything she's said, though.* I repeat, I agree with everything she says. Bear in mind, most named devs are 'idea men' they don't actually help code any of their ideas, that's why they have the code monkeys that leave the moment the project is over. Pournelle's Iron Law of Bureaucracy states that in any bureaucratic organization there will be two kinds of people: First, there will be those who are devoted to the goals of the organization. Examples are dedicated classroom teachers in an educational bureaucracy, many of the engineers and launch technicians and scientists at NASA, even some agricultural scientists and advisors in the former Soviet Union collective farming administration. Secondly, there will be those dedicated to the organization itself. Examples are many of the administrators in the education system, many professors of education, many teachers union officials, much of the NASA headquarters staff, etc. The Iron Law states that in every case the second group will gain and keep control of the organization. It will write the rules, and control promotions within the organization.

In reality, 88% of actual gamers (regular video game buyers and players who don't just play mobile puzzle games) are male and 11% are female, and 1% are "other." Growing up, most girls would make fun of you for being a gamer. In fact, I didn't see actual female gamers until 2009-2010 and even then, they only played The Sims, Call of Duty, and World of Warcraft. I didn't even see girls playing Pokemon until at least 2015.

@@MarvinPowell1 Sounds about right. I was born in the 80s; and until I played MMOs like FFXI and LotRO, I knew/met online less than a dozen girls who played games. And all of them nearly exclusively played big-name JRGs like Dragon Quest and Persona. Every now and then one of them would try a Zelda game lol. The only reason I even encountered that many is because back then I pretty much only played those kinds of games as well. Never knowingly met any girls in forums for anything like Doom or RTS games. (At least I think not… online back in the late 90s/early 2000s was much more anonymous lol.)

I had the pleasure of working with Laura for many years. Your impression of her is right on. She's smart with great instincts. It is sad that people minimize her to "Executive Producer of Microsoft" instead of her more senior title as "Studio Head of WB Games." She really has seen it all, from mid-success with games like Zoo Tycoon to blockbusters like Gears of War to flops like War in the North.

"Will they ever one day look at themselves and say 'I am the problem'?" No, there is a mental defense. Think about it, would you rather live in a delusion where you are important, you are doing things but you have to overcome the people holding you down, or would you be able to take the mental pain of recognizing you were wrong, you have been wrong and everything people said that you hated to hear was right?

For the record Laura Fryer's history in games seems to lay mostly in Gears of War and Zoo Tycoon, which started with Microsoft Revenge of Arcade. She was in the industry from 1998 to 2015, which is during the time frame that the rot was being laid within the bones of the industry.

I used to be an auditor with one of the big 4/5 firms. A huge amount of time and energy was spent attempting to ensure not only independence from clients but also *perceived* independence. Failures in this regard would end up in lawsuits and press scandals. It has always been striking to me how the symbiotic (or parasitic perhaps) relationship between game studios/creators and journalists was just accepted. The conflict of interest is striking and obvious.

Craig, I have to point out, your game company idea sounds more like a publisher than a development studio. Nothing wrong with that, the business model could be very successful as like a game 'launchpad' or 'accelerator'. Talent constantly comes in with fresh ideas, they collaborate, they improve, you move to the next thing, they stick around, or move on with their experience and renown.

In a relatively recent Capcom survey when asking what games people wanted to see from them, 82% were male, 14% were female and 4% were “other”. Now, I’m going to guess that some of those female responders were traps, and some of the “others” were actually biological males too, therefore, I’d say it was closer to a 90/10 split biological males to females.

I qualify as a senior now guys, but I'm still young, and have my eye on the prime entertainment format of the age and in the world. Big chunks of society have let that fact slip right on under their radar. Movies! Phtttt! Gaming is where the focus is at! The mind-rot has infected EVERYTHING, and that just won't do! Anti-gamer, and more broadly anti-consumer corporate business practices are a scourge on everything, but are easily solved when all of us simply say little more than "No," and turn away. Let those consumed rage on to the modern audience that isn't there!
